The Space

I built this Retreat House with aesthetics to match the unparalleled beauty surrounding it. A tall order but it feels I accomplished just that and I love it here year round.

The master bedroom has one of the most comfortable, queen sized, double-pillow top mattresses to be found... perhaps in the galaxy. The views from this room are spectacular, the coyotes sing lullabies at night, and there is a ceiling fan for a gentle breeze in summer and passive solar and wood burning stove for heat in the winter.

There is also a day bed in the living area that could be used for a 3rd person.

The kitchen is superbly stocked if you wish to cook (and just clean up). Coffee/tea/basic condiments provided for cooking.

Kitties have lived here so if you have allergies, this may not be your best option.

Built in 2006 as my personal retreat house in the high Rockies, it is nestled against the backdrop of three 14,000 foot peaks in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. My Santa Fe-Style home is exquisitely furnished in an Asian-influenced style with spectacular views of the valley as well as the mountains from any window in the house.

One of the few homes in Crestone to have landscaping and what a difference that makes in the summer. But this is no ordinary landscaping... there are walkways, chair hammocks, benches, a water feature with fountain and where there might be boring grass, I've planted a meadow of indigenous wildflowers and grasses. There are some nice pics of this in the photo session. Fencing is the key to have such landscaping in an area where deer and wildlife would consider these glorious plants as brunch. I've cultivated this meadow like landscaping to attract both bees and butterflies and it works!

This little remote mountain town, Crestone, is truly one of the undiscovered gems by travelers seeking those fewer and fewer roads less traveled here in North America.

Aside from some of the best mountain day-hiking in all seasons to be found anywhere, the stables are a 10 minute walk from my retreat house. The National Sand Dunes is another not-to-be-missed sights with one of the best informative museums I've ever been to. With innovative displays it will explain that nagging question of "How Did those Great Dunes get here anyway?".

Hot Springs abound in the area as well and you'll want to devote a day to the uniqueness of each of them. My fav is the Sand Dunes Pool about a 40 minute drive from my house and I go there 3x/week to teach a one on one anaerobic aqua training that focuses on alignment and muscle toning.

There are a couple of architects who live here who have had major influence on design and the harmonics of living. True to the spirit of those ground breaking architects of the 40's who felt that living could be enhanced by thoughtful design, this approach continues here in Crestone sometimes in the most whimsical of ways. Clearly, many homes here are NOT designed with resale value in mind, but rather dream house designs that would not be dared in less rural areas.

Though the operative word is "Retreat", there are many wonderful things to experience while living in the moment of such wonder. There are twenty five traditional spiritual lineages to discover. Among them are three Tibetan Buddhist Centers, two Zen Buddhist Centers, a Vedanta Center, a Carmelite Hermitage (whose 160 acres joins my property), a Sufi group, a well established Haidakhandi Asharm and even an Episcopalian and Baptist Church, for those with a more mainstream spiritual leaning.

There is the Mercantile store in town (with a REAL butcher on staff) where you can pick up all your groceries. You have the option to cook in my superbly equipped kitchen with high-end cookware or you may want to just try the local cafes in town, only 2 miles from the house. The local, free-range Yak Burgers are stellar and your taste buds will welcome the experience. I also teach one on one cooking classes using my background in endocrinology and nutrition as the foundation.

Of course, there is always the option to try out the 2 cafes in town - only one will I recommend to you, but hey, that's only my opinion.

Many guests come for personal retreat time, to write or meditate/reflect. There is no telephone, radio or TV since this really is a time to distance oneself from such distractions and focus on the quiet, the moment, and the opportunity to experience such stunning beauty.

There is, however, Excellent wireless internet, if you choose to bring a laptop and while there is no ban in bringing a cell phone, iPhones get the best signal and Verizon is likely to give you any signal at all for other types of cell phones..

Other Things to Note

Cleaning fee for month long rentals is $100 rather than $35 for shorter rentals

Arriving before dark is a Must. There are no street lights out here and if you don't have Verizon and it's after dark, then even smoke signals can't help you.

There are options to choose for an additional fee: to have me cook meals (based on what your food preferences are) and I am available to teach a 7 Point Mind Training meditation as well as aquatic anaerobic class at the geo-thermal pool.

  • What a wonderful place! Claudia's house is beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished. The views from the house are breathtaking! Surrounded by pinon pines and native plants, we found the house and garden a peaceful, retreat-like setting where we could truly relax. Claudia is a warm and gracious hostess, who is very knowledgeable about the area, and happy to share helpful information about sights to see and places to visit. We wished we could have stayed longer!

  • This is a beautiful, well-laid-out little house, with stunning views of close-up and far-off mountains in a quiet, private neighborhood. The atmosphere is peaceful; no TV but wind chimes, bird song and gardens, with a welcoming older gentleman who looks after the gardens. There are hot springs to choose from and many other attractions in this area. WIFI is reliable. A memorable place!

  • The heavens have sent down Claudia to host this amazing retreat in the heart of Crestone, CO. My wife and I spent our 1st wedding anniversary in her beautiful adobe style home and could not have had a better time. Claudia hand-picked 2 bouquets from her garden to help decorate the house in addition to leaving us her favorite bottle of white wine to add to the celebration. We had asked about recommendations for a masseuse while we were in Crestone and Claudia had a good friend of her's come to the house and my wife and I both got our favorite massage of all time, without having to leave!! This was picture perfect and we hope to be back soon! Thanks Claudia :)

  • Crestone is beautiful. This retreat house was beautiful. Claudia was a great host. As a woman traveling alone I found it very helpful to have Claudia available to point out places to go, things to see. She was very gracious and generous with her time. She took me into town to grocery shop and then to the hot springs one morning, and for a drive tour of parts of Crestone.
The house is beautifully decorated- great colors and art. and views of the beautiful Crestone mountains and valley.
The backyard is a lovely sanctuary- lots of flowers and birds. The kitchen is available for cooking. I enjoyed making my meals.
This is a great place for lone travelers, especially a woman who likes a little guidance and connection with their host.
Claudia lives at the house and is happy to chat or leave you be.
    I definitely recommend this place.

  • Claudia was a wonderful host! She really wants you to enjoy her home, feel comfortable as if it was your own. She goes out of her way to help you explore the surrounding areas and is so very helpful in all ways. We worked it out so she did the cooking for me and that was fabulous! It was great to eat so well and learn so much about food and how to eat more healthy easily! I will stay with her again whenever I am in Crestone!

  • This really is a "hidden gem" waiting to be discovered.

My brief stay in Crestone, was nothing short of trans-formative! I can truly say that I have come back to my reality as a changed individual. Not only is Crestone extremely conducive for those seeking peace, clarity and the stability of mind, but Claudia is what really ties is all together.

Claudia was generous with her time and laughter as well as insights. With her, I discovered that I do indeed have the time to develop good nutritional habits, schedule in 10 minutes in the morning just to sit quietly and come present to the moment despite my extremely busy professional life. A week with Claudia and I learned to cook fabulous meals of wholesome food quickly and made more fun with a glass of wine while cooking. We went to the geothermal pool at the sand dunes daily. We hiked. I napped during the day and experienced peaceful sleep like I used to before my life became super stressful.

I will return as often as possible to reinforce these new habits and to laugh, cook, swim, hike with this remarkable woman who sees herself as ordinary.

This brief time not only changed my mental and physical health but has transformed me forever.

  • When visiting Crestone, do yourself a favor and stay with Claudia! Not only does she have a gorgeous home with spectacular views and wildlife, she's an incredible host with a wealth of knowledge and wisdom!

She was more than happy to show me all the beauty her nook of the woods has to offer. During my stay we hiked to a Stupa, shared lovely dinners together (she's a phenomenal cook), went swimming at a geothermal pool and visited the famous Sand Dunes. We even drove an hour to witness the Sand Hill Cranes during their migratory trek to the North. An absolutely breathtaking experience that I'm so grateful to have shared with her!

Claudia was very conscientious about giving me my own space and time as well, which was the perfect balance to our outings.

A small and discreet sign in her home reads, "May all who come as guests, leave as friends". And this is precisely what happened during my stay. I consider Claudia a friend and look forward to my next visit.

Whether you want a lovely place to be in solitude (email hidden) to help you explore the area, Claudia and her home are the perfect Crestone retreat!

For 30 years I studied nutrition and Oriental medicine with private clinical practices in Santa Barbara and the Bay Area. For three years I lived and worked in a renowned university in Seoul Korea as their Director of International Studies of Oriental medicine. Before turning to Oriental medicine in my 40's I lived and worked as a documentary photographer in places like the Golden Triangle of SE Asia, Singapore, Indonesia and the garbage landfills of Tijuana, Mexico. Now, I live quietly, write, meditate and feed my soul with all the books that I never had time to read but bought in abundance in the hopes that I would read them someday. Someday has arrived. Crestone offers me that Time and Space to explore... the mind, books, nature (esp. birds), and the challenges of living so remotely.
