Great place to stay. Helpful host. Make sure you stay with friends to share the experience and the cost of living.
Our "real Japanese experience" was great. Our family of 9 were a little snug, but it was a fabulous location and experience. NICE AND WARM for our mid winter vacation.
Yukio is a wonderful host. 7 of us stayed at 'the samurai house and it was spacious and comfortable. He was also kind to pick us up from the train station to the house for our check-in. Communcation was not a problem as he is multilingual. He also made excellent recommendations when we asked about where to get specific type of foods, and about good ski resorts and onsens.
Samurai House is a excellent place. We stayed there from Nov 20-24 2013. It is situated in a quite & calm neighbourhood. As we rented a car from New Chitose Airport, so locating the house with GPS was not a problem. Mr. Yukio was superb nice guy. All prior enquiry emails were replied promptly. He gave us all his contact number & house address. Mr. Yukio can speak Englsh & Mandarin well. We arrived 1 hour early than scheduled time, but Mr. Yukio was already there waiting for us The house was very clean. It had 2 rooms with 10 mattress, so can sleep 10 persons comfortably. It had 2 living rooms- one western style and one Japanese style. So it had enough space for my kids to play around. It had a kitchen equipped with all utilities. There were microwave, kettle, refrigerator etc. However there was only one bathroom with a small bathtub which can turn into an onset, and there was a toilet next to the front door. The room was kept warm by a huge heater. However there was no washing machine provided. After checking in, we realized there was no TV, but upon request Mr. Yukio managed to deliver a small TV monitor to us in the next day. A portable WIFI hotspot was provided for free. It was a plus point. We carried out this WIFI hotspot out to every places we visited so we could constantly upload our travel photos into our (website hidden). We also used it to search for tourist spots' map code and phone number to key into our GPS. We even use it to make viber call. The only drawback was the speed was very slow, only ~120kb, not enough to stream Youtube video. There was a nearby Lawson and Victoria Station restaurant was not far away. Upon checking out, as our car was overloaded with luggage bags, Mr. Yukio was very kind to arrange an additional airpport taxi for us promptly.
Yukio was a great host, picked us up from the trainstation and was very helpful during our stay. The house is a real Japanese experience, was a good stay in Sapporo.
Clean, quiet, and spacious, and very cost effective. There are convenient store, super market and laundry near by. We really enjoy the 3 leisurely nights. Yukio is so generous, he not only helped contact with the bicycle rental store, but also drove us to the downtown rental store!
We enjoyed our stay at the Samurai house very much. Having the whole house to ourselves for the majority of our stay was great, it is a spacious traditional Japanese home with plenty of room for us and our two boys. The location is actually quite nice since is away from the busy-ness of the city center, yet very accessible via the train located a short walk away. The adjacent Maruyama is beautiful and looks straight out of the movie "Totoro." Take a few hours and walk to the top to see the view of Sapporo, completely worth it (also go see Moerenuma and climb the pyramid). There are some great restaurants within a few blocks of the house including a great Italian restaurant (novocento?), Takoyaki near the train, and one of my favorites in all japan, Maruyama (Splurge and order the Omakase).
Yukio was a very caring host and while not being intrusive, was extremely helpful in making our trip to Hokkaido as great as it could be. We had clear instructions for the Taxi and he was there awaiting us when we arrived. During our stay, not only did he arrange for little things like laundry, he managed to find us the last car available to rent during high season, after two weeks searching with two different agencies with zero results. Yukio was definitely our hero (and if you visit in August, reserve your car well in advance!) Since our trip was very last minute, we overlapped with the previous guest Andre, who turned out to be a sweetheart and gave us lots of good advice and places to visit. This was a perfect complement to Yukio's list of suggestions of his favorite spots both within Sapporo and outside. Yukio was a very gracious host and provided us with a very fair price to compensate for a couple days of sharing the Samurai House.
Both my sons loved Sapporo and the Samurai House, and they both insist on coming back during winter so we can go snowboarding. There is no question that I will be contacting Yukio to place a reservation!
