  • Well I thought this room was amazing!!! I was so sorry not to have met Bernie because the reviews I read about her were also great… I did meet Kevin, her husband, who I thought was one of the nicest people I’ve met. I thought his sense of humour was brilliant too!!!
He had so many tips about the neighbourhood and because he is Hawaiian, (born and raised on the Big Island) he knows so much about the culture and was willing to point me in the right direction for pretty much anything… The breakfasts were incredible… The Likeloi Butter was so amazing!! So the room was cosy, the bed very comfy and I had my own toilet!! I shared the shower, which is wheelchair friendly by the way... There was a fridge in the room and if you needed more space there was an even bigger fridge in the common room... Two entrances made it easy to come and go.. parking was easy... They had everything you needed...
The area felt safe. I became friendly with two other couples (one from my home town!!) and thought it was the perfect place to stay if you didn’t want to be in the town of Kona. Their bnb is so close to “2 step” and right around the corner from the beginning of the famous and tough Captain Cook hike trail, which takes you right down to the monument (bring enough water!!). This booking was a last minute booking to tie me over as I arrived early on big island… I was very sad about leaving so I must have subconsciously left my reef booties in order to return and say hi again... which I did the next day... When I return to the big island I will definitely consider staying here again!!!! Thanks Kevin and Bernie!!!!

  • Bernie is a great host! It's a beautiful place with a super clean room, comfortable bed. and great bathroom. The first two days this amazing breakfast is included.
Laundry is also available for 2$ each load.
I highly recommend staying at Bernies location in Captain Cook, which is close to Kona. I found some good restaurants and Café in Captain Cook and there are also a few pretty beaches on this always-sunny-westcoast.
Thanks for hosting me, I would definitely like to come again!

  • I loved my stay at Bernie and Kevin's place and I was very sad to leave. Bernie and Kevin are very generous hosts who make me feel extremely welcomed and at home. The Plumeria room is perfect for one person, very clean and well decorated. All is brand new.
I really appreciated the breakfasts that Bernie cooked for me. I was not expecting them and I think they were the best I had during my three-months trip in Hawaii!
Bernie and Kevin really pay attention to their guest and make sure that we have everything we need.
I would recommend this place to anyone who wish to stay on the Kona side of the island.

The house is new and very clean and there is everything you could want (towels, snorkel gear, bodyboard...)
It's definitely a place to recommend. With a car you can go everywhere around Big Island.

About
A L O H A, My husband Kevin and I were both born and raised in Kona. I am of Portugese decent, the third generation born and raised here! Kevin is Asian and his dad was born in Kona and his mom was born and raised on Maui. Kevin is a sponge for trivia and detail, will be able to answer most of anyone's questions. Kevin is now retired after working for the state for 33 years. He is now working on his "honey do" list that is quite extensive!. I am a registered nurse involved with home health for many years. I enjoy meeting new people and learning about their homelands and cultures. I have a passion for raising orchids and have a collection of about 100. I am an avid cook, dabbling in many ethnic cuisines. I also enjoy sewing and many crafts. We share our home with Prissy a 5 year old Shi Tsu who has Kevin wrapped around her paw. She is a tiny thing and is friendly, calm and quiet. She loves laying in the morning sun and belly rubs are her weakness. I have a grown daughter and son who both reside on this island. I am grannie to 3 granddaughters and 2 step grandsons. We look forward to sharing our home and aloha with all who are looking for a relaxing fun filled vacation on our beautiful island. You will enjoy your private space here. Just call upon us with any needs and questions.
