About this listing
Great little space for quiet retreats. We have had the most amazing guests stay in what they have called the fairy cottage, garden room, and cocoon room. If you want to get away & enjoy a cozy little space, this is it! Great food at our deli too!
Our charming garden room has amazing views of the beautiful Topa Topa Mountains across the field and orange groves. It has served as a writer's studio and a home for four years to two successive individuals. This is surprising as the space is very small, only 8' x 10'. It has a twin bed, upper loft for storage, tiny dresser, desk, internet, French doors and windows on three sides and a tiny deck to take in the views.
Bathroom access is in the house a few steps away. There are only one and a half baths in the house. The half bath is dedicated to our guests and the full bath is available for showering. After 8:30 a.m. works best for us, but if your event schedule starts earlier, we are flexible.
Our guests must be prepared to be smothered in love from our extended family of dogs. They live in the yard during the day and are crated at night in the house. The front garden is a "pet free" zone and can be enjoyed as a place for relaxation and dining.
The neighborhood is quiet and within walking distance of the village, our Marche' Gourmet Deli, Libbey Park and Libbey Bowl, Sunday farmer's market, art, movie theatre, bars and restaurants. There is a trolley stop a block and a half away.
Our place is unique because we are two unique women; an artist/chef and a musician/ spiritualist who run a gourmet deli and catering business. Come prepared to enjoy excellent food at Marche' Gourmet Deli!
No kitchen access is included in this space, but there is a small fridge and electric tea pot in the room. Bathroom access is in the house a few steps away.
Interaction with Guests
Most guests are in town for a retreat of some kind and seem to be up and out early and return late. So often, we don't see them much, but sometimes we share a meal if it's convenient for everyone.
It is really beautiful here. We live in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance of "downtown" Ojai (which is small). You can see the stars at night as there are few street lights in our semi-rural neighborhood. Our property backs up to a field, orange groves and a beautiful view of the Topa Topa Mountains.
You can walk just about everywhere, but there is a local trolley bus for around town, and buses that go down to Ventura. There is also a great bike trail that goes all the way to the beach (about 12 miles from Ojai.)
Other Things to Note
Please note that we cannot accept guests with dogs as we have several that inhabit the yard where the room is located. They are friendly with people but are territorial with other dogs. It detracts from the peaceful atmosphere that is a hallmark of our location.
We expect friendly courtesy and respect of our home. Because our guests will be using the bathrooms in the house, we appreciate a consciousness of our schedule. Guests are welcome to use of the half bath at any hour and the full bath for showering between 8:30 am and noon. (If your event schedule starts earlier, allowances can be made.) The dogs alert us when the house is accessed, so we appreciate our guests turning in by 11 pm and respecting the quiet, natural setting here. Please note that smoking is not allowed on the premises at any time. The front garden can be enjoyed as a place for relaxation and dining away from the pets.
This was absolutely the perfect place to go for a solo retreat from the hectic life of Los Angeles! Gay and Pat are so sweet, and were very respectful of my privacy -- I really felt like I was in a beautiful little oasis of sun-kissed studio space, which was exactly what I needed. The dogs are adorable and sweet, and it's lovely to look out from the desk onto the gorgeous orange groves! Thank you so much for hosting me -- if I find myself back in Ojai soon, I'd absolutely love to come back and stay again with you!
I was looking to get out of LA for a few days to clear the mind and do some writing. I found that in Ojai. The host was wonderful and friendly. It is a small space, but this garden room is a great place to rest your head at night. The home owners also run a great deli on the main street with great food. It was my first time in Ojai and loved everything about it. Everyone knows each other (at least it felt that way from my encounters). There are no "big box" stores so it's all local businesses.
This was a perfect retreat. Pat and Gay are wonderful, kind, and generous hosts. The dog team is lovely. The cabin was perfect for me. Beautiful night skies, fresh clean air, short walk to a great hike and the little village. Their deli is super fresh and delicious. A perfect retreat for anyone who needs a reset button on their life : )
I was welcomed at the Gourmet market in town and had a world class salad with Gay and a friend. We headed out to the house and I got a nice tour of their facilities. The room is comfortable and compact with a beautiful view of the mountains and tons of light. Pat and Gay are well known and highly regarded hosts who lived up to their wonderful reputations!
Gay and Pat were both very accommodating and kind. I was there for the Ojai Music Festival and come to Ojai often so I was happy to be left on my own to come and go as I pleased. The room is small but cozy and the bed is comfortable - the view is beautiful! It's also close to the downtown area so convenient which was a huge plus for me!
I stayed 5 nights and this was a perfect room for me - I loved the garden / outdoor feel and the room was cozy and comfortable. I would recommend this room and the host is kind and accomodating. I look forward to returning to stay during my next Ojai adventure.
I was welcomed from the start. I met Gay at her deli where I had a delicious lunch and was given an expert guide to exploring Ojai. At the house I was warmly received by Pat and the lovely dogs. My room was small and cozy, just as described. The bathroom in the house was a bit of a hassle but was exactly what I knew I was getting into. Pat and Gay were wonderful hosts, they went above and beyond their obligation to make me feel welcomed and at home. I had two very peaceful nights in a comfortable bed with a beautiful view of mountains out the french doors.
About the Host, Gay
We are both native Californians and have been in Ojai for over 20 years operating first the Garden Terrace restaurant and now Marche' Gourmet Deli right in the middle of town. Pat is a painter, hence her title as "The Painting Chef", and spends most free time in that pursuit. I am a singer/songwriter/spiritualist. We love Ojai for its quiet, beauty and sense of community.
