"Must-Love-Dogs" Topa View Cottage.

Cabin - Private room · Mercer Avenue, Ojai, CA 93023, United States

The Space

Our charming garden cottage has amazing views of the beautiful Topa Topa Mountains across the field and orange groves. It has been a writer's studio and a home for four years to two successive individuals. This is surprising as the cottage is only 8' x 10'. It has a twin bed, upper loft for storage (or a second sleeping area), tiny dresser, desk, internet, French doors and windows on three sides and a tiny deck to take in the views.

Bathroom access is in the house a few steps away. There are only one and a half baths in the house. The half bath is dedicated to our guests and we offer the full bath for showering when we leave for work at 9:30 a.m.

Our guests must be prepared to be smothered in love from our extended family of dogs. They live in the yard during the day and are crated at night in the house. The front garden is a "pet free" zone and can be enjoyed as a place for relaxation and dining.

The neighborhood is quiet and within walking distance of the village, our Marche' Gourmet Deli, Libby Park and Libby Bowl, Sunday farmer's market, art, movie theatre, bars and restaurants. There is a trolley stop a block and a half away.

Our place is unique because we are two unique women; an artist/chef and a musician/spiritualist who run a gourmet deli and catering business. Come prepared to enjoy excellent food at Marche' Gourmet Deli!

  • The host Gay and her partner, Pat, were fantastic. I even got some unexpected and much appreciated hospitality one morning in the form of coffee and oatmeal, plus some engaging conversation.

Thanks, Geary. Glad you enjoyed your visit. :) Gay

  • My experience was simple and pleasant. The cottage is very small, enough space for one person to sleep. Gay and Pat are lovely, definitely go visit their Deli - it feels a slice of Europe in Ojai.

Thanks for your review, Noe. Glad you had a pleasant visit. :) Gay

  • this was not a good experience. one of the host was warm and friendly, gay was not. from the beginning i felt she would need the space on her own, only reluctantly gave out the wifi password and seemed quite moody. it could have gone alright though, but then i needed use the bathroom during the night and took a slice of bread in the kitchen. they did not say it was not ok to enter the house during the night, i didn't know this would wake them up and how unpleasant the reaction would be. knowing that with my jetlag from hong kong it could happen again that i would have to use the bathroom during the night. if the rule excluding the bathroom for guests at night was already on the site when i booked it would my fault i overlooked it on the profile, but at least they failed to tell me on my arrival. i decided it was best to leave the next morning. i asked whether it was possible to bill me just for one night, gay declined and insisted on my paying for an additional night - fair enough, those are the rules. however i still did not receive a refund for the 4 other nights, and that is absolutely not ok. we agreed these 4 nights would be refunded.

Hi Martin, This review is unbalanced in my opinion. There is absolutely no "rule" saying a guest cannot use the bathroom at night! We do, however, let our guests know that when they come in the house, that the dogs will wake us. Our guests usually try to use the bathroom before 11 p.m. so they do not wake us. And there is a house rule about kitchen use. But when I found you in the kitchen and you asked if it was alright that you took a piece of bread, I responded that it was just fine. It was just a surprise to find someone in our kitchen in the middle of the night. I had no problem giving you the password to the wifi at our house, altho you and I did have some trouble decifering what it was, since I don't have to enter a password in my computer as it is "hardwired" so to speak. I only hesitated giving you my computer to look around for the password on it. As for paying for the visit, you have to contact airbnb about that as they handle all the financial transactions. You have to request the refund from them. Sorry you misunderstood the situation.

  • Gay and Pat are amazing hosts. I arrived being sick, and they really took care of me, waiting for me with warm ginger carrot soup! They are sooo sweet. Loved hearing their life stories, which was really inspiring. They are of course great cook, I enjoyed having lunch at their deli almost every day. The room is cozy, warm and has a great view. If I have a chance to go back to Ojai I am definetely gonna stay at their cottage again. Oh, their doggies are so lovely and friendly as well!!

  • Just returned from a wonderful week in Ojai. My little cottage space tucked behind the house with views to the mountains was delightful. Gay and Pat were very welcoming hosts making me feel very much at home while still respecting my privacy. The location in Ojai is very convenient and the price can't be beat! Perfect choice for me.

  • Gay and Pat's home was the most ideal place to be. The cottage was cozy and warm. The view of the mountains and orchards is wonderful.
I felt very comfortable in their home. The environment is beautiful and welcoming and peaceful. It's the best location because it's close to town, yet quiet and serene.
It was nice to have a mini-fridge in the cottage to put things I bought at the farmer's market.
Best of all were the sweet dogs to hang out with! I'm especially looking forward to returning so I can see them again.
Thank you so much Pat & Gay!

  • Privacy, peace and quiet - all available in this little escape in the Ojai hills. The hosts Gay and Pat are lovely, friendly women who are busy working, so leave you to your own devices. Yes you must love dogs and especially Chihuahuas, for there are a host of them and by the end of my visit I was almost part of the family. Town is within easy walking distance but the piece de resistance is the serenity and views of the surrounding hills and orange orchards punctuated by the howls of coyotes during the night. My hosts helped me with some local sight seeing and getting me to my transport connections and were always available for a chat or local advice.

  • Gay was a great hostess. I felt very at ease and comfortable in her house. The location is fantastic. Very central and easy to get to downtown. The dogs are very sweet and friendly. A bonus was stopping by her deli for a tasty quiche and salad lunch.

Thank you, Carla, for you kind review. It is our first one, so, of course, it is especially important. Feel free to contact us anytime you come to Ojai. You can always find us at the deli! :)

We are both native Californians and have been in Ojai for 20 years running a restaurant first, which we closed last year, and now Marche' Gourmet Deli right in the middle of Ojai which we opened last summer. Pat is a painter, hence her title as "The Painting Chef", and spends most free time in that pursuit. I am a singer/songwriter/spiritualist. We love Ojai for its quiet, beauty and sense of community.
