Our charming garden cottage has amazing views of the beautiful Topa Topa Mountains across the field and orange groves. It has served as a writer's studio and a home for four years to two successive individuals. This is surprising as the cottage is very small, only 8' x 10'. It has a twin bed, upper loft for storage (or a second sleeping area), tiny dresser, desk, internet, French doors and windows on three sides and a tiny deck to take in the views.
Bathroom access is in the house a few steps away. There are only one and a half baths in the house. The half bath is dedicated to our guests and we offer the full bath for showering when we leave for work at 9:30 a.m.
Our guests must be prepared to be smothered in love from our extended family of dogs. They live in the yard during the day and are crated at night in the house. The front garden is a "pet free" zone and can be enjoyed as a place for relaxation and dining.
The neighborhood is quiet and within walking distance of the village, our Marche' Gourmet Deli, Libby Park and Libby Bowl, Sunday farmer's market, art, movie theatre, bars and restaurants. There is a trolley stop a block and a half away.
Our place is unique because we are two unique women; an artist/chef and a musician/spiritualist who run a gourmet deli and catering business. Come prepared to enjoy excellent food at Marche' Gourmet Deli!
No kitchen access is included in this space. Bathroom access is in the house a few steps away.
We often have a meal on the first evening with our guests. Most guests are in town for a weekend or week retreat of some kind and seem to be up and out early and return late. So most of the time, we don't see them too much.
It is really beautiful here. We live in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance of "downtown" Ojai (which is small). You can see the stars at night as there are few street lights in our neighborhood and we are semi-rural here. Our property backs up to a field, orange groves and a beautiful view of the Topa Topa Mountains.
You can walk just about everywhere, but there is a local trolley bus for around town, and buses that go down to Ventura. There is also a great bike trail that goes all the way to the beach from Ojai (about 12 miles.)
Gay and Pat are very friendly and welcoming to their home. The room is very private and airy, and the nighttime sky will satisfy any stargazer! The dogs are sweet and well-behaved: they'll thrill with any attention or leave you to your space (your choice). Gay and Pat's European deli is a MUST for any meals in Ojai. This is my new "go to" retreat ... (:
The hosts made sure that they were accessible to me. At the same time I felt that they weren't in my space. The space itself was sweet with mini-fridge and clean with an awesome view of Topa Topa. It was near an open field so that the stars (the ones in the sky) were clearly visible at night. Besides for their 4 legged friends interested about me it was a quiet area on a wide road leading to the mountains. I was quided well when inquiring as to how to get about. Overall the descrip of the place was clear-bathroom through the home and dogs all around in the backyard. There is a way to get to the space through a side entrance. Most important part was that the hosts were very hospitable.
The little cottage is teeny, but is very pretty and the bed is comfortable -- a very comfortable little space. The 10 chihuahuas are ubiquitous -- I was always greeted with the one bossy little "watchdog", but they are all very friendly and loving. The name is right, though -- you gotta love dogs dogs dogs, because you'll be surrounded by an excited pack all wanting attention, and you may have to step carefully if they've just been let out and the yard hasn't been picked up yet! I didn't have any problem with that, and it was great to be greeted so enthusiastically.
And the view! Incredible by day, sunset, sunrise, and fantastic stars at night.
Gay and Pat are terrific people, and I enjoyed being in their home. They also run a fantastic gourmet deli in town, so the house smells amazing in the morning from the baking croissants or brownies.
Expect some clutter and mess, not sterile and immaculate -- but if you're comfortable in a real, lived-in home and don't mind a cobweb or two here and there, you'll be very comfortable.
I was in town to participate in the Ojai Art Festival. I had a lovely visit with Gay and Pat. Their cottage is small, but cosy, quiet, and comfortable. The views form the cottage are gorgeous and peaceful; an open field backed with orange trees, a spectacular view of the Ojai mountains. The cottage has a small fridge, and a heater if required. The bathroom facilities are in the main house, but they make it a completely comfortable situation. The dogs are a delight. I might have spent most of my stay after the show in the cosy cottage if not for the really wonderful opportunity I had to spend time with Pat and Gay (they are interesting, engaged, lovely people), and the lure of Ojai itself. Downtown Ojai is an enjoyable, easy walk from the house. The neighborhood is quiet, serene, and is full of interesting craftsman architecture. Gay and Pat have a sumptuous gourmet deli downtown (Marche' Gourmet) that is a must visit. I highly recommend this listing to anyone who wants sink into a genuine Ojai experience.
Very sweet cottage in Ojai with an amazing view. These ladies were lovely hosts and the dogs were also lovely hosts! Quiet clean and accommodating. Highly recommended. Thanks Gay!
A lovely experience with Gay & Pat and all the dogs.
My experience was simple and pleasant. The cottage is very small, enough space for one person to sleep. Gay and Pat are lovely, definitely go visit their Deli - it feels a slice of Europe in Ojai.
this was not a good experience. one of the host was warm and friendly, gay was not. from the beginning i felt she would need the space on her own, only reluctantly gave out the wifi password and seemed quite moody. it could have gone alright though, but then i needed use the bathroom during the night and took a slice of bread in the kitchen. they did not say it was not ok to enter the house during the night, i didn't know this would wake them up and how unpleasant the reaction would be. knowing that with my jetlag from hong kong it could happen again that i would have to use the bathroom during the night. if the rule excluding the bathroom for guests at night was already on the site when i booked it would my fault i overlooked it on the profile, but at least they failed to tell me on my arrival. i decided it was best to leave the next morning. i asked whether it was possible to bill me just for one night, gay declined and insisted on my paying for an additional night - fair enough, those are the rules. however i still did not receive a refund for the 4 other nights, and that is absolutely not ok. we agreed these 4 nights would be refunded.
Hi Martin, This review is unbalanced in my opinion. There is absolutely no "rule" saying a guest cannot use the bathroom at night! We do, however, let our guests know that when they come in the house, that the dogs will wake us. Our guests usually try to use the bathroom before 11 p.m. so they do not wake us. And there is a house rule about kitchen use. But when I found you in the kitchen and you asked if it was alright that you took a piece of bread, I responded that it was just fine. It was just a surprise to find someone in our kitchen in the middle of the night. I had no problem giving you the password to the wifi at our house, altho you and I did have some trouble decifering what it was, since I don't have to enter a password in my computer as it is "hardwired" so to speak. I only hesitated giving you my computer to look around for the password on it. As for paying for the visit, you have to contact airbnb about that as they handle all the financial transactions. You have to request the refund from them. Sorry you misunderstood the situation.
Gay and Pat are amazing hosts. I arrived being sick, and they really took care of me, waiting for me with warm ginger carrot soup! They are sooo sweet. Loved hearing their life stories, which was really inspiring. They are of course great cook, I enjoyed having lunch at their deli almost every day. The room is cozy, warm and has a great view. If I have a chance to go back to Ojai I am definetely gonna stay at their cottage again. Oh, their doggies are so lovely and friendly as well!!
