This is the real Costa Rica experience; A new, clean, rustic brick villa, tucked into the jungle with views of the coastal foothills. Very comfortable with AC, satellite tv, WIFI & phone. Great long term rates.

The space

Neat, clean, comfortable, private & secluded new rustic style brick home with powerful AC throughout, satellite tv, WIFI internet, and celular phone service offered at an affordable rate.

This gated estate is central to 20 different beaches and beach towns, closest beach is Playa Grande only 3 miles down the road.... The property is off the beaten path, tucked into the costal foothills in a jungle setting with tons of wildlife; birds, monkeys, iguanas, frogs, butterfly's and other interesting insects.

We fumigate regularly and the community cat does a good job keeping bigger pests away like bats, snakes, mice etc....., but be aware this is the tropical countryside, so if you have fear of the occasional little jungle critter, this probably not the best place for you.

This is a destination retreat, so a car is recommended, but we do offer discounted rental rates for our guests through our preferred rental car provider.

The ambiance boast gorgeous mountain, valley, and jungle views from the front porch. Sprawling ocean views a short hike through the gated estate to the top of the hill, an ideal spot to watch the sunset. Listen to the day and night sounds of the jungle and all their habitants... it is really quiet remarkable.

Great location to see and do the most on your vacation; 5 - 15 minute drive to a plethora of beautiful must-see beaches, but there is so much more like... Zip line tours, surfing, sea kayaking, tours up the estuary, volcano's, national parks, leather back turtle refuge, snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, 4-wheeling backroads tour, fishing, all within just a few minutes drive. Many of the tours offered the tour guide will pick you up at the estate.

Basic provisions can be found in the quaint little town of Matapalo just a half mile away. For a larger market, ATM machine, and more restaurants drive east 2 miles on the main road you came in on, to the town of Huacas...

We are far enough off the beaten path to enjoy an authentic Costa Rica setting, and away from the tourist traps.

Everything you need nothing you don't, the perfect vacation rental at an affordable price.

Guest access

Rental car is needed. If you read the reviews, 4x4 is highly recommended, especially in the rainy season, but I have a front-wheel drive sedan and I've never had a problem. Our guests receive discounted rental car rates, so be sure to ask!!

Interaction with guests

I have the airbnb app on my phone and am notified immediately. I live in Costa Rica and can always be reached easily by house phone, if I am not already on the estate.

My hubby and I LOVED staying in this cabin. It was perfectly secluded and peaceful, yet a few minutes drive into town. We were fine with a sedan, but it would probably be best to go with a high clearance car. We cooked at home every single day and found the kitchen to be well-equipped. It was also wonderful being in the kitchen and seeing all the wildlife that appeared right outside the window. There were no curtains so we were up at 5:30 daily, but we're early birds and appreciated the extra time to enjoy our day. Daniel was a great host and, although he travelled away, Mario was great at being present for anything we needed. I did get stung by a bee while sleeping and went to Mario for guidance, so we were grateful he was on site. Overall an amazing stay!

We stayed in this mountain getaway for 5 weeks. It's a very rustic and true Costa Rican experience and it worked perfect for our stay. It's a 15 minute drive to Playa Grande, where we went every morning. The driveway is very steep. You don't have to use 4x4 but definitely need to put it in 1st gear :) it takes 5 minutes in the car to drive into Matapalo if you'd like to eat at those restaurants or shop for groceries at the 2 "mini super" grocery stores. The house has sheets and two towels along with one hand towel. It does NOT have hot water but there is a cold shower. It has a mini fridge with the little freezer inside (freezer part fits 5 water bottles lying flat) there a microwave and one working burner stovetop. There are pots and pans and utensils too! It's a little home away from home with the basics. Be sure to leave windows open during the day and fans on to air the place out. If you leave the windows closed it gets stuffy and smells a little weird. The a/c works very well and cools the whole place in less than a half hour so no need to leave it on all day. They fumigate the property however the whole playa grande/Matapalo/Tamerindo area has lots of bugs so I'd recommend bringing bug spray for sure. The house is extremely safe as well. It's up on the mountain and there is no traffic in or out so everything is totally secure. If there's something you need Daniel is a great host and ended up helping us with a couple things we lost or forgot. Mario the care taker is extremely sweet too. Each morning when we pulled out we were always greeted with a Buenos Diaz and a smile. Lastly the wifi was great as it's mobile! We face timed and made lots of phone calls using it! Hope you have a great stay.

Response from Daniel:
Future guests: If you have a problem please tell me and give me an opportunity to fix it instead of having to learn about it in a review. For example; A weird smell is usually a simple solution like storing your trash in a different location or fumigating less. Hand towels, just need to ask. Both burners work on stove, left side is automatic and right side you have to light with a match. The closest beaches are 3 miles / 6 km, so 15 minutes if you are a very slow driver. I do it in half that. There is no hot water and if you're the type of guest that needs hot water when the average temp during the high season is 90F / 32C it's probably best you stay somewhere else... This is an authentic mountain cabin for people looking for a REAL Costa Rican experience.

Stephen and I loved our stay at Daniel's place! The place is as described - beautifully situated within the forest in close proximity to several amazing beaches. We had a blast exploring many different beaches - the closest (Playa Grande) just 10 minutes away. The place had everything we needed with no frills. It was perfect for what we were looking for.

Daniel's place was the first airbnb experience my boyfriend and I have ever had and it was awesome. The cottage was in the exact location we were hoping for. The all wheel drive car is definitely a must. Daniel's directions are perfect for getting up there, if you follow them you should have no problem finding the place. If you have problems with anything Daniel is easy to get a hold of and is super helpful. If you go there with no real plans on what you want to do for the day he has many suggestions that got us started in the right direction on what to do. Matapalo is the closest town and has a great little bar and grocery store. All the towns are super easy to get to and honestly everything is really not that far away from each other. This was the first time I had ever been out of the country and I didn't know to not put toilet paper in the toilet. DON'T DO IT Ha ha. Mario was a great on the property as caretaker, no English but we were able to communicate the best we could. Loca, the dog, was super cute and so nice. Made us miss our dogs at home but it was nice having her around. We also had monkeys visit us and that was really cool. All in all if you want to experience the locals, the nature and the perfect getaway without the "all inclusive" cookie cutter vacation, then this the place you want to be.

We stayed in this lovely, quiet and peaceful host for our first 4 nights in Costa Rica. Once we found the way up (was not that hard to find with the description, just don't miss the old fishing boat) Mario warm welcomed us and showed us our bungalow. We found there everything we needed, for our stay (equipped kitchen, even TV and WiFi are available). The neighborhood is very calm and it's beautiful to walk around the area, Mario is a very helpful caretaker. The first morning a monkey family welcomed us too passing by in the trees next to our host. Going to playa Grande from the host is very easy and not necessary to have a 4x4W car for reaching the Brick cottage!

Great place if you're looking for something low key, peaceful, and a little rugged in the midst of paradise. Great central location to explore surrounding beaches and areas. I was traveling alone and stayed about a week. Even so, I was perfect, as the caretaker lived close by and the locals were more than friendly! Daniel was probably the best host I've ever had -- he helped me with everything from directions, activities, and even helped me make a few friends! If it wasn't for his suggestions and his amazing cottage, my experience would not have been as perfect! I can't wait to go back :)
