Why Aigne HERAULT?
When you arrive in the village of Aigne, the first site you see is the village courtyard and fountain. To your left is Lo Cagarol a wonderful restaurant that is perfect place for lunch, sitting outside enjoying the villagers walking by and the old men sitting on the bench talking about the sanglier hunt, the grape harvest, their gardens and the local wines. However, do not spend too much time here, as the uniqueness of Aigne is just 30 meters away at the end of the courtyard.
Walk through the archway into the old Roman circular village that dates to the year 1000. You are walking where the old drawbridge and water-filled moat once existed. There was a portcullis here at one time to keep bad guys out. Now it beckons you to walk deeper into the shadows of time. Above you is the ancient guard house with the viewing ports still visible. Turn left and you are on the walkway around the inside of this protective structure.
Continue your walk into the past. On your right is the sculpture and painting shop of Atelier Jatteau. Just a few steps further and you enter a sunny courtyard in the middle of the circulade and see the beautiful 11th century church of St. Martin and the chapel built on an even older Visigoth religious site. At this point, continue just a little further up the walkway and you are in front of our house. In 1697 someone lovingly rebuilt the house within the chateau walls using the original stone. Notice the curved walls, the silence and the history.
Passing through the front door, your first impression is that you truly are in a circular structure because you look through the entry way and the living room out to the sunny, large terrace (64 M2). You will first want to see the terrace. As you go, notice the small wall painting to your left. It is a registered and protected French historical treasure. Once on the terrace, take in a deep breath of the clean air filled with the scents of rosemary, thyme, earth and grapes. Welcome to Aigne.
On the rez chausse (American first floor), there is a living room that leads out to the lovely terrace, a large dining room with a French country table seating ten and enormous fireplace, a fully furnished kitchen including a built in wood grill and a full bathroom.
The first floor (American 2nd floor) contains the master bedroom with another large fireplace and en-suite bath, a large sitting room - also with a fireplace, as well as a guest bedroom.
On the second floor (American 3rd floor) is the third bedroom. The 3 bedrooms have, respectively, two 190cm beds, two twin beds that can be put together to make a king, and a queen-sized bed. Linens are furnished.
Aigne is located in Hérault in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France. The closest airport is Carcassonne Airport (43 km).
