Calm and convenient location

Guests say this area is peaceful and it’s easy to get around.
Independent B&B on our houseboat with your own entrance. We are located on a sunny and quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam, close to Centraal Station, Anne Frank House, The Jordaan and the Canals. Your space is totally private with your own bathroom, bedroom, captain's room and wheel house. The space is centrally heated and double glazed for chilly days. You also have access to outside space on our pier where you can relax into the evening on warm summer nights.

The space
Your space is in an independent section of our houseboat, with private entrance and access to our private pier (shared with our neighbours) and is separate from our part of the houseboat (where we live). It features central heating, double glazed windows for extra insulation, operable windows, 3 rooms, each on its own level; the Wheel House with views out onto the water, the Captain's Room, and sweet cosy bedroom with a comfortable two-person bed.

The newly built bathroom features a corian solid surface sink, and the shower has a porthole window with a great view of the canal. Towels, extra blankets hairdryer, shampoo and bath gel are all provided!

Do be aware of the following before booking, the ceiling height is comfortable for those with a maximum height of 6ft 2 inches tall.

Also the rooms are separated by small ladder type steps, so this would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues.

Our charming and cosy houseboat is an authentic Haagenaar ship built in 1900, originally used to carry bulk goods throughout Holland and Europe. It now sits on a picturesque, sunny and quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam, just a 5 minute walk from the beautiful historic canal district, the Jordaan neighbourhood, Haarlemmerbuurt, the 9 Streets (great shopping) and Central Station with trams, buses and the NS Train.

Only a few moments away walking or by bike from 2 of the best bio-organic markets in Amsterdam, It's a foodie's dream. It is also walking distance to several excellent restaurants including Barentz,, Wolf Atelier, Gouden Reael as well as a few local bars and café's such as Westerdok Cafe, Blaauwhooft, and many more in the nearby Jordaan neighbourbood.

Also included are:
- Some Dutch beers
- Dutch stroopwafels
- Mixed nuts
- Coffee Press and Water Kettle for Tea
- Espresso / Coffee and specialty Teas
- Wireless high-speed internet (200/20 Mbps) suitable for high-demand use
- Small bluetooth speaker
- Small Refrigerator
- Hairdryer

We are lucky to live in one of Amsterdam's nicest neighbourhoods. Our canal is wide and quiet even though it's right in the city centre. We are just a 5 minute walk to great markets, shops, cafes and restaurants. After a day of sight seeing and enjoying all that Amsterdam has to offer, it's a great place to come home to and relax while you look out onto the water.

Guest access
You are welcome to enjoy the (sunny in the summer) seating on the pier which we share with our neighbour!
We ask that you respect our privacy and your safety by not venturing out past our entrance on the pier.

Other things to note
Although we live in the other part of the houseboat, your space is very private, independent from the rest and with its own entrance.

Furthermore, acoustic insulation between the two parts ensure that you won't hear us and vice versa. ; )

SOME HISTORY ABOUT 'MS DE HOOP'.

Our pride and joy 'MS De Hoop' was built in 1900 on a wharf at what was then ‘Zuiderzee’ as an original ‘Hagenaar’ freight ship that spent its first 50 years transporting bulk goods from the Hague to various parts of the Netherlands by sail. In 1960, she was converted into an engine ship, and the mid-ship was cleared and heightened so that it could hold more goods. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s that the ship was converted into a houseboat and found a sweet mooring just a hundred meters from where we are now.

The Westerdok itself used to be a shipyard that opened out onto the Y-river the place where a lot of the old VOC ships were built. In 1832 it was made into an island by creating the Westerdoksdijk and Westerdokseiland. Ships could unload their goods onto trains here, and customs officials could check shipments before sending it off to land or sea.

Between the late 80's and when these large apartment blocks were built in 2008, Westerdok was an alternative scene for squatters and hipsters, with the former warehouses serving as artists' living & work studios / ateliers as well as providing some cool party venues.

We bought 'De Hoop' in 2008 and have remodeled her into our own vision of how we love to live on the water. Whilst staying true to all the authentic details we upgraded everything to incoporate modern comfort.

Westerdok has become a neighbourhood community and a part of Amsterdam’s city center. We are just a 10-minute walk from Centraal Station and from the Jordaan, the Haarlemmerbuurt, and the historic canals with cool boutiques, cafes, and restaurants.

We’re sure you’ll be able to enjoy the best that Amsterdam has to offer.

My work: Creative Director at Ministry of MEDIA
My biography title: Why not?!
We are a Dutch couple (I am originally American) who love to travel and meet people, so having a b&b is a great way to bring the world closer to us! We were introduced to each other on a hot summer's day at a beach party at Blijburg by Jake's dog Max (who was on the planet for over 14 years) Life was never the same. We now have Akasha, (or should I say she has us!) a very pretty young dog rescued from the woods in southern Italy by a couple on holiday. Living on the water has always been a dream for us, and 10 years ago we made it a reality. We are so lucky to have the best neighbours and a great local community of caring people around us. Cooking for friends and practicing yoga are dear to my heart as well as my appreciation for Dutch art and design. Jake has his own interactive design agency in town and cycles to work. I am currently working on two MAs at the University of Amsterdam, one in philosophy, the other in English Literature and Culture.
