A 240cm work desk, a queen bed, the 300sqm studio one floor up. This close to the water it runs a touch more humid; people come to work and find they slow down. A 240cm work desk, a queen bed, and a small library of books on creativity, culture and a few all-time favourites. The studio is one floor up, open whenever you want to make something. The river stays with you. Soft, not loud. You can close the doors for quiet. Being this close to the water, the room runs a touch more humid than the others. People come here to work and find they slow down.
Raw concrete, red brick, custom cement tiles, original artworks. Designed and built by hand by contemporary artist Ole Ukena. You're not in a room dressed up to look creative; you're living inside an artwork.

PARKING
Got a scooter, or renting one? Park it in front of the studio so others can still get out. Common courtesy, and they'll love you for it.
KEYS
Safe area, nothing's ever happened. Still, lock your door when you're out. Trust in God, but lock your bicycle.
DESK
If you're working on a project, make yourself at home at the table. If it's something messy that could mark the wood, lay a sheet of plastic down first. That's all we ask.
CATS & DOGS
You'll meet the residents. Foxy is small, quirky, and devoted to Sky Eye. Bombi is a Bali dog who lives for long walks, so take him across the rice fields and he's yours for life. Then the cats. Ida, a Bengal and a genuine supermodel, mostly holds court at Rudi's with the family. And Kaya, part-time studio manager, full-time bouncer, usually belly-up, entirely convinced she owns the place. She's not wrong.
BREAKFAST
Wayan makes it, often with Nano. Pancakes, smoothie bowls, fresh juice, coffee, a cold coconut. Have it brought to your door and keep working, or come up to the studio and eat with whoever's around. Company, or quiet until the thing's done. Both are good.
LAUNDRY
There are laundry services on Jalan Kajeng, the street leading to us. Drop off, pick up. Laundry can be unpredictable in Bali, so a small prayer to the laundry gods doesn't hurt.
AIR CONDITIONING
We held off on AC for a long time, for the environment, and because Ubud is usually cool enough. But if you've just landed from a European winter, we get it. Use it only if you really need it. The climate will thank you.
RENT A SCOOTER
You can rent one along Jalan Kajeng, a few places to choose from. Around 60K IDR a day, with a discount for the month.

When you cross paths with someone here, say hi. That's the whole rule.

The last 200 metres into AIR are on foot or by scooter. Cars can't come all the way in. We handle the transfer ourselves, no matter how many bags or how much luggage. Just let us know when you're arriving and we'll take care of it.
Here's the upside. You're in quiet nature, a river right there, rice paddies all around, but downtown Ubud is a 2 to 3 minute scooter ride away. Hundreds of restaurants, yoga studios, cafés, galleries. You get both: the calm of the countryside, pretty much downtown.
This is still a forest. Geckos, frogs, the occasional unidentifiable bug, no 24-hour front desk. The AIR family is around most of the time and happy to support you in any way, from local tips to logistics to whatever you need. We run regular community dinners: Nano cooks, guests show up, someone usually picks up a guitar.
The tropics are humid, Ubud more so in rainy season. We can't change the climate and wouldn't want to. Come ready for it.

The neighbourhood is Juwuk Manis, which means Sweet Orange. You reach it off Jalan Kajeng, the famous lane beside Ubud Palace, an eight minute walk or a few minutes by scooter from the centre of town. Step out and you're on the Kajeng rice field walk, also known as Subak Juwuk Manis, one of the most central paddy walks in Ubud. A flat loop through working rice fields, right at the door.
On one side, the rice and a bamboo-lined river. On the other, the whole of Ubud: restaurants, warungs, yoga studios, cafés, galleries, the morning market. Walk down Jalan Kajeng and the path is paved with engraved stones, names, dates and small messages, each one paid for by a visitor who wanted to help keep the walk up. A piece of public art you read with your feet, lined with a market and warungs all the way to the main road.
Deep green nature and basically downtown, at once. Painters and craftspeople have kept studios on these lanes for generations.
