A countryside home, our 1200 sq ft cabin near Emporia, KS features 2 bedrooms (king/queen), 2 baths, big living room, new appliances, kitchen, laundry room and more on a 46-acre, secluded farm. The front porch overlooks a farm field and timber. Walk our trails and skip rocks in Hill Creek. Enjoy the fire pit. Or jump on the Flint Hills Nature Trail - one of the longest rail trails in the US and a favorite for hiking and biking. The FIFA World Cup at Arrowhead is only 110 easy miles away.
The space
Picture a rustic log sided cabin in the middle of a 640 acre section with a half-mile dead-end road leading to it. That’s Hill Creek Cabin! It sits on 46 acres of farm ground and timber. Sit in comfortable chairs or the glider on the 40’x10’ covered front porch and overlook 31 acres of crops and the timber bordering the field.
Walk the field edges and trails in the timber down to Hill Creek. You’re likely to see deer, turkeys, raccoons, squirrels and opossums; as well as song birds and an occasional eagle. Or just walk up the dead end road and back for an easy 1 mile stroll.
There is a great fire pit in the yard, and wood available (in a small white, open shed behind the garage). You can cook out on the grate in the fire pit, or use the provided gas grill by the garage. There’s a lighter you can use - on the top shelf in the laundry room.
Go a mile north of the dead-end road and you’re entering the Kansas Flint Hills Trail State Park. This is an excellent Hall of Fame rail trail that extends 118 miles from Osawatomie to Herrington, and you’re kind of in the middle of it. Walking, biking or horse-back riding are allowed. Historic Council Grove is about 25 miles west on the trail, and Osage City about 20 miles east. We love the trail! You can ride your bike to and from the cabin to the trail easily - no dogs, smooth gravel road.
Inside, the cabin is modern and beautiful with all new appliances, furnishings and everything else. Showers in both bathrooms, shower/tub in the master bedroom bathroom. Remote control ceiling fans. Gas log fireplace (won’t be active until fall). There are box fans in each bedroom (we use them to sleep, thought you might like it too). Each of the bedrooms has touch-activated lamps with USB A and C inputs. You can also charge your devices from the powered couch and loveseat in the living room.
The house sleeps five, and that includes two for the king bed, two for the queen bed and one on the couch. On request, we provide a high-quality, structured twin air bed with bedding.
Wireless internet is T-Mobile’s top system with built-in cyber protection. The television is internet access only, but there are several built-in apps.
Corn hole boards and bags on request. Two disc golf baskets on property.
Guest access
The main floor of the house and the yard are all yours! The basement is locked, but there is a key in a key box hanging from the clothes rack in the laundry room. If severe weather is forecast during your stay you will get a message from us with the combination to the key box. The basement is unfinished and used for storage, but it is the safest place to be if there is severe weather. It’s dry and safe - just not the most comfortable place.
Feel free to walk and explore the field edges, timber and trails to Hill Creek. The trails and the creek are really pretty at some times of the year. But know that there are ticks, chiggers, snakes and other critters out there and be prepared.
We highly recommend that you spray thoroughly with tick-repellant before you wander out of the yard!
If there is smoke in the air, please keep the house windows closed. Kansas pastures are burned each spring, so it’s pretty smoky sometimes March through early May. If you use the fire pit, please keep the house windows closed so the house stays fresh.
Thanks!
Other things to note
We are 110 miles from KC’s Arrowhead Stadium, site of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
We have installed a security camera on the garage that covers the driveway and back door to the house (in response to a guest who smuggled a pet inside against our rules). It is not active for guests who have booked on or prior to July 15, 2025. It does not show any activity inside the house.
There is a butane lighter for the fire pit on the top shelf in the laundry room.
