Manesty is a beautiful three bedroom attached farmhouse cottage in Borrowdale, in the heart of the Lake District.
The cottage dates back to mediaeval times and has retained a wealth of original features, from a great slate table in the hallway to exposed beams and meat hooks in the kitchen and the original thumb-latch doors. We've furnished it in a country cottage style, with antiques and pretty bedspreads. The cottage now has a fully reburbished kitchen, complete with wood burning stove and underfloor heating. It is perfect for a family or a group of friends of up to 7.
***Please note, except for last minute bookings, Manesty is let on a weekly basis (Saturday-Saturday) between Easter and October. But do message us for a special offer or last minute deal - we always have great discounts between September and March.***
There are 3 bedrooms: 2 double rooms and 1 family room with a double and a single bed. There is a bathroom/wc on the first floor and a shower room/wc on the ground floor.
There is a cosy traditional sitting room at the front of the cottage looking out over the Borrowdale valley.
The big country kitchen has a comfy sitting area so you can enjoy the fire in comfort, and a farmhouse table for sociable dinners. There's a dishwasher and all the cooking equipment you'll need. The washing machine and tumble drier is in separate utility room.
Outside an old garden gate leads to a gravelled area with seating, lawn and panoramic views of Borrowdale. There's parking for one car by the cottage and more off road parking nearby.
Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with it's teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The 'Honister Ramber' bus takes you the 5 miles into Keswick from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the launch runs all-year round, as does a bus from Grange.
We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 11 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate. We're at the foot of Catbells, which is well known as the Lake's favourite beginner's fellwalk, but there are also challenging day hikes up Scafell (the highest mountain in England) or relaxing rambles by the lake or in the woods.
Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.
This is an excellent location for walking in the lake district. Several interesting, easy and challenging walks straight from the front door. A small and cosy cottage makes the stay complete.
Jan and Patricia (February 2014)
What a lovely couple of nights we had in this cosy little hut.
Firstly, we could not have had a nicer welcome. Upon arrival we were shown around by Alan and introduced to Alice, who had kindly warned us of some roadworks a couple of miles away a few days earlier which we would have encountered on our journey. Alan was a great host and explained how everything worked in the hut, presented us with loads of local information (inc. bus information, nearest pubs, restaurants, walks from the door) and showed us the facilities.
We then began to unpack. My car read "3c Risk of Ice", what have we left ourselves in for staying a little hut in February? But our fears quickly disappeared. The hut is so cosy with its wood burning stove and at night the very comfortable bed.
Using one of the walking guides provided we decided to go on a little adventure, and what an adventure. The area is spectacular and has a true Lake District landscape of rolling hills and valleys with views for miles (we did the Maiden Moor and High Spy walk via the abandoned slate mines).
That evening we went for a lovely pub tea at the Royal Oak Hotel in nearby Borrowdale (2/3 miles down the road) where with excellent food, a great atmosphere and an open fire, it was a great way to relax after our walk.
We have a fantastic trip in our little hut. Since we got (and everyone had seen our (website hidden) photos) we've been asked by several friends where we had stayed and I cannot recommend the hut enough.
We definitely hope to book again in the summer and have another (warmer/drier) adventure.
We stayed 5 days/4 nights in the lovely cute shepherd’s hut in the beautiful lake district during february and had a really wonderful experience there, despite sometimes challenging and changing weather. Especially after a long day of walking and exploring the nature it was very nice when we could come back to a warm and cozy home. Even during a harsh storm and heavy rain - the hut was very quickly warmed up and offered us everthing we needed to rest and relax. The 20 metres walk to the bathroom was sometimes a bit challenging during a stormy night.
The hosts were very welcoming, friendly and always ready to help out. Their instructions were clear and the maps and information they provided about suggested walks and the surrounding area was very helpful to plan our days. We also had a chance to enjoy the outdoor hot bath tub - we were warm and could relax well even while it was raining heavily.
Overall, we had a lovely and unforgettable holiday in the lake district which was also thanks to our cute, comfortable and special accomodation. Thank you!
Brilliant, a lovely warm reception. The hut was awesome and comfortable. And the duvet to die for.
Definitely going to book again in the summer months.
Book the tub, it's great!
Alan and Alice, his daughter, were terrific hosts - friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The cottage was beautiful, spacious, and well-equipped and the surrounding areas were idyllic. In terms of location, it was easily accessible from Keswick but it feels far enough for a perfect weekend getaway. We are already planning our return later in the year.
We had a great stay with Alan and Cheryl - very comfortable three bedroom more than accommodated our family of four. We have had several AirBnB experiences and while all have been great, we have to say that this home had the best prepared kitchen of any to date making it easy to prepare meals and not run out of plates, silverware or pots and pans early! We enjoyed three nights of comfortable sleep with days full of exploring the Lakes District - we come from Vancouver, and were very impressed with the scenery the area provided! We would stay with Alan and Cheryl again, and would recommend to anyone looking for a comfortable stay with helpful, informative hosts.
The stay at Tommys bit was absolutely wonderful , it's the perfect place for a few days peace and quiet. We would highly recommend staying here
Our 3 nights stay in the Manesty hut was a pleasant and cosy experience. A lovely and unique way of welcoming in the New Year.
There is a small fire oven which heats the hut up well however, in Winter months ensure you take warm bed socks as it still remains cold lower down on the floor. Having said that, there is also an electric heater for additional warmth.
The bed is very comfortable and the duvet was perfect for keeping us warm throughout the night. A small but intimate hut with all the necessary appliances to make it a comfortable stay. The washing facilities are a short walk from the hut offering a shower and toilet.
The location is perfect if you're looking for a peaceful break. One surrounded and immersed in nature! The fells are a short walking distance and Alan kindly explained the walking tour routes, places to eat and where to see the fireworks for the New Year.
We were unable to use the hot tub as other guests had booked it so be aware to book in advance before your stay as there is only one hot tub. Alan kept us informed of any changes and offered us access to it the morning we were leaving.
Overall, our stay will be a memorable and enjoyable experience. I would definitely stay here again, rain or shine.
A wonderful stay at the Studio in Manesty!! Alan & Cheryl were very helpful.
We stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate the new year. The studio had everything you needed.
First night we strolled down to the Borrowdale Gates hotel for a few drinks and a game of scrabble by a lovely open fire. Second day, we climed Maiden Moore and Catbells, then went into Keswick for our evening meal, then back to Studio for a well deserved bottle of Prosecco and watched the fireworks! On our final evening we rented the wood-fired hot tub and spent a good few hours bathing in it, it was glorious, and we didnt let the wind and rain put us off!
All in all a wonderful stay and could highly recommended staying in this lovely part of the world.
lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings would highly recommend
