Manesty is a beautiful three bedroom attached farmhouse cottage in Borrowdale, in the heart of the Lake District.
The cottage dates back to mediaeval times and has retained a wealth of original features, from a great slate table in the hallway to exposed beams and meat hooks in the kitchen and the original thumb-latch doors. We've furnished it in a country cottage style, with antiques and pretty bedspreads. The cottage now has a fully reburbished kitchen, complete with wood burning stove and underfloor heating. It is perfect for a family or a group of friends of up to 7.
***Please note, except for last minute bookings, Manesty is let on a weekly basis (Saturday-Saturday) between Easter and October. But do message us for a special offer or last minute deal - we always have great discounts between September and March.***
There are 3 bedrooms: 2 double rooms and 1 family room with a double and a single bed. There is a bathroom/wc on the first floor and a shower room/wc on the ground floor.
There is a cosy traditional sitting room at the front of the cottage looking out over the Borrowdale valley.
The big country kitchen has a comfy sitting area so you can enjoy the fire in comfort, and a farmhouse table for sociable dinners. There's a dishwasher and all the cooking equipment you'll need. The washing machine and tumble drier is in separate utility room.
Outside an old garden gate leads to a gravelled area with seating, lawn and panoramic views of Borrowdale. There's parking for one car by the cottage and more off road parking nearby.
Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with it's teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The 'Honister Ramber' bus takes you the 5 miles into Keswick from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the launch runs all-year round, as does a bus from Grange.
We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 11 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate. We're at the foot of Catbells, which is well known as the Lake's favourite beginner's fellwalk, but there are also challenging day hikes up Scafell (the highest mountain in England) or relaxing rambles by the lake or in the woods.
Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.
Had a fabulous stay at Tommy Bit this weekend - Alice, Alan and Cheryl were all lovely and so helpful - particularly Alice who helped us get organised with a taxi into town! The Shepherd's hut is so adorable - perfect for a long weekend break and super cosy! The Hot Tub is a must - worth every minute refilling with fire wood.
We took a stroll out along Catbells Terrace and round to the Swinside Inn using some of the suggested walks provided by Alan & family - the pub is well worth the leisurely walk - roaring open fire and home cooked meals!
We also did a brewery tour at the Keswick Brewing Co in town - it was a nice activity for anyone interested in the brewing process or craft ale in general.
As all of the other reviews mentioned, this place is perfectly situated. We took a walk through the neighborhood (they provide an outline of 10 walks right out the door) on our first night and it really felt like we were going on a treasure hunt! The scenery is breath-taking. I would strongly recommend hiking up Castle Crag (provides panoramic vistas of Derwentwater on one side and of brilliant green, rolling sheep pastures on the other) and Catbells (provides a long view of the lake). We came in early April and the weather was ideal--clear skies and magical scenery for miles.
Alice is fabulous--easy to communicate with, helpful, and enthusiastic. The place was clean and had every kitchen tool we needed. Oh my goodness I want to live at Manesty it's so beautiful.
We spent a fantastic 3 nights at the Shepherd's hut. We were greeted on arrival by Alice, who was extremely welcoming & full of helpful information. The hut itself is really cosy, clean & equipped with everything we needed for our stay, including information/maps for various walks. I thought the '12 walks from the door' put together by the hosts were fantastic. Each walk gives a duration, terrain type & difficulty rating + a map. We managed to do 3 of these during our time at the lakes. We also hired the hot tub for 2 nights of our stay. This was a perfect way to relax after a long day of hiking. It was lovely sitting in the tub amongst the trees listening to the owls hooting above!
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & completely fell in love with the Lake District. We have already discussed planning another visit soon!
Amazing little gem. Simple living at its best and great hiking nearby.
Had an excellent time. Was looked after and given ample information. Would visit again.
What a lovely weekend. A warm welcome, beautiful location and practical and cosy apartment. The walks recommended by Alan and Cheryl were fantastic, would definitely go back.
We had an amazing time here. The flat is great, really clean and well furnished and full of useful information about local walks and entertainment. The hot tub was fantastic too! Alan and Alice were really friendly and helpful hosts and gave us lots of information too. We'd gladly stay here again.
Perfect weekend. Studio exactly as described. Couldn't get a better location, hosts lovely, hot tub was great be sure to book for a night. Already looking at dates to go back end of August! Loved every minute of it. The walking guides were a great help, located within in easy walking distance to 2 pubs and cafes. Absolutely stunning views.
We had a great stay in the Shepherds Hut!
Alan & Cheryl were great hosts and left us to it (which was what we wanted), but were there if needed.
The hut was equipped with everything we needed and everything had been thought of- even a place for our dirty shoes!
I always feel the cold, but the hut was well insulated and the bed linen was lovely and warm.
The area itself was beautiful with lots of outdoor activities and places to eat.
Will hopefully be back soon as it was perfect to escape the stresses of work and the city- just what we needed!
Alan and Cheryl's place is the perfect base for outdoorsy activities- both for its location, and their excellent recommendations for what to do. After a long day of walking, it was nice to be able to come and relax in the cosy studio.
Although we never met Alan or Cheryl, they were easy to liaise with. The only downside of our stay was how short it was- there was so much to do, we would have loved to stay longer.
