A Winter Retreat on Classic Canadian Lake

Our retreat is a cabin nestled in a forest, on an aquifer-fed lake with crystal clear lake shores. Dear, beaver, loons, birds, owls and blue herons visit our property daily,

We have waterfront docks, a floating raft, and huge rock fire-pit along the water. A canoe and paddle boat are there for those who want to explore the lake. This lake is even stocked with trout for those who want to take a rod with them.

Get the wood-fired sauna started, then head for a hike and return to a lovely sauna and hot outdoor shower.

The Western Cedar Cabin:

Ralph Lauren style decor in a 16'x24' cedar log building with loft ceilings, exposed beams and exposed log walls throughout. Open-concept cooking and living area, wood stove, surround sound and flat screen and dvd player. FIrm mattresses, pillows and duvets assure a great night's sleep.

The kitchen is equipped for people who like to cook. Good knives, copper bottom pots, crock pot, sandwich/waffle grill, gas bbq - you name it, we have it!

Wireless service is very good the lake. You can tether your phone to a laptop to work up there.

Perfect for one or two couples or one couple with children. One bedroom with one double and single bunk beds; living room seating converts to a queen bed. There's a huge claw foot tub in the bathroom and beautiful views from all the windows. Deer hang out on the property throughout the year.

Our outside hot shower is one of our guests favourite features. Imagine taking a hot shower after a hot sauna or long hike, while watching the birds fly by!

The cabin is on Wenona Lake, near Loon Lake - a 15 min drive from Village of Haliburton with all amenities including spas, groceries and liquor stores, restaurants, shops, bookstores. Many artist studios are in the area. Mountain biking at Sir Sam's resort, Haliburton Forest for tree top and ground hikes in the region.

Note: We do not generally encourage pets but will handle these requests on a case-by-case basis.

  • Wonderful getaway in a beautiful setting. The cabin was as described--it is very cozy and clean and has absolutely everything you could want in a cabin including a wood-fired sauna! I'd like to take a moment to comment on the water since. A previous visitor mentioned that it tasted strange so we picked up bottled water on our way in which turned out to be a waste of money because the water from the taps tastes absolutely great! I will definitely be planning a return visit!

  • Our time spent at this amazing cabin was great. A perfect quite peaceful April weekend. The continued visits from a family of deer made it extra special. The place was super clean and everything worked well. The view is incredible!

The only issue I had was the purified water had a chlorine taste to it. Not a big problem but a heads up would have been nice as I would have brought my own filtered (email hidden)ally not an issue though.

  • Our stay at Susan's Retreat was lovely. Very quiet surroundings, especially in Winter, and a cozy little cabin near the lake. Everything is available inside the house for cooking, relaxing. Susan makes snowshoes available for hiking around the lake and the sauna is the perfect place to warm up and relax after a day in the cold. We are already planing our next weekend there!

  • It was wonderful to stay in this winter retreat cabin. It was such a relaxing and peaceful escape from "real life". The cabin is so cozy with its little stove it is easy to just snuggle inside with a good book. However, venturing outside is well worth it! We went for wonderful walks on the frozen lake and saw more deer than we could count. There are snow shoes but they weren't necessary during our stay. We capped off our adventures through the woods and ice by firing up the sauna and even dared to jump in the snow after we heated up (note: hard, crunchy snow should be avoided). Overall, our stay was terrific. The kitchen is fully loaded, there was wood to burn and a lovely sauna to enjoy. Just be sure you are (or are with) a capable fire builder. It was a rustic (just the right amount of rustic), cozy paradise.

  • We had a wonderful long weekend in Susan's cozy little cottage. Truly a magical place. The fully equipped kitchen was great for cooking big delicious meals, and the wood stove did a fantastic job keeping us warm day and night. Plenty of firewood and kindling was provided with extras stored in the shed. The living room is as cozy as can be with large windows offering picturesque views of the lake below. We went xc skiing around the lake every morning and snowshoeing every evening to see the beautiful sunsets. Thank you Susan for being a great host and adding to the ever growing Airbnb community with this great property! We'll be back again for sure.

  • Was a great experience. Cabin came exactly as advertised.

Looking forward to booking again in the future.

    Thanks Susan!

  • The Sheehan's cottage was beautifully set, clean, the kitchen was well appointed to make almost anything you might wanna make, the sauna got up to over 150 F which was perfect for coming back to after faceplanting in the snow, there were deer, there were blue jays, there were people ice fishing on the lake. Don't be daunted by the somewhat daunting set of instructions that come with the cabin. They're long because it seems that Susan has anticipated everything. Took a little while for the water to start running (a bit over an hour) because of the prolonged, intense cold the week before, but once the cabin warmed up (doesn't take long once you get the fire started) and the water was running in the toilet (the last thing to get going), we had no problems. All in all, a great place to spend the weekend.

  • The cabin was lovely and just as pictured. It was very cold when we arrived but there was plenty of dry firewood and kindling to get the wood stove going - also lots of blankets! There is a well-equipped kitchen with all the gadgets you need. The sauna was amazing and warmed up quite quickly. There's lots to do in the area, and we went dog sledding in the Haliburton Forest.
All in all a very relaxing and picturesque stay, perfect for a couple or a small family.
