The Space

The Gray Rock Inn is 102 years old, but is remodeled and up to date with new fixtures and fire sprinklers. Of the 20 rooms, only two rooms are rented by the day thru Airbnb.

All rooms are private. Bathrooms are shared in old world style. Room occupancy is limited to two people.

Guest Access

Access is easy to bathrooms, kitchen, laundry, patio, porch, and balcony. Wi-fi is available. Computer and telephone are free in the lobby.

Interaction with Guests

John is available days, and Will is resident manager. We'll check you in 4-6 pm and leave you alone the rest of the time. If you will be arriving later than 6, let us know so we can make sure to be there. We are not on-site full time, so good timing and communication are essential. Please try to be on time, and let us know if there are delays.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is lively and diverse. Walk to world class restaurants, music, and craft breweries. Next door is a community food coop that is open to the public. Across the street are the Orange Peel music hall and Wicked Weed Brewery. Read about the Bunkum Stone (a landmark) by the front entry.

Getting around

Public transit bus stops are in front of the building, going north and south. Asheville's main bus depot is 4 city blocks to the west. There is some parking in the back, and pay parking next door.

Other Things to Note

The house has 16 full time residents with private individual rooms, renting short and long term. There are a total of 5 public bathrooms shared by 16 rooms. The room has a window air conditioner for the summer months.

  • Great place to stay right in the middle of downtown Asheville. Room is pretty big, with everything you need (fridge, sink, towels etc), is quiet and air-conditioned, and the shared bathrooms are clean and easily accessible. Terrific value, and we'd definitely stay there again if we were in the area!

  • The room was in a great location in downtown Asheville and was described as it was listed online. John was very helpful when we arrived and told us about a couple local places he likes. The shared bathrooms were always very clean and the house where the room is located was quiet. For the price and location, you can't beat it. It's right across from Wicked Weed, one of the many great breweries in Asheville!

  • We enjoyed our stay! The room was clean and very private. We barely saw a soul while there and there was never a wait for the bathrooms. It was quiet, we did not have any noise issues. Great location for walking to restaurants!

  • Our stay at the Gray Rock far exceeded our expectations! We chose the room based on all of the positive reviews and location. I wasn't sure if sharing bathrooms would be odd or not, but it wasn't at all. There were two bathrooms downstairs(where our room was) and they were both almost always free.

John made very clear what he expected of his guests and tenants as far as safety, cleanliness and respect for other goes, so we felt very comfortable during our stay.

Our favorite things about the place:

1 - The sink in the bedroom for teeth brushing, hand washing, etc. No need to go to the bathroom outside of the bedroom for little things like that.
2 - The mini refrigerator in the room came in very handy for bottled water, leftovers, awesome Asheville beers. :)
3 - The location! We made a habit of driving somewhere for a hike in the mornings then parked behind the house (always a space) and walked for the rest of the day.

Thank you for a wonderful stay! It made an amazing city that much better.

  • Good stay at the Gray Rock. John's son checked us in and explained everything about the place very thoroughly.

  • This place had everything we were looking for and was affordable. The location allowed us to access everything in downtown without a car. It was a nice room with new a/c unit. I am very appreciative that we had access to the Gray Rock Inn. I will definitely be staying here again when coming into town.

  • John was very helpful and informative. The Gray Rock Inn is in such a lovely location! It's literally across the street from The Wicked Weed, one of the best Breweries we tried in Asheville. The room is just as pictured. The Inn was very tidy and peaceful to boot. A++ would stay again :)

  • The room was very clean and the house was very accommodating to our needs. The location is outstanding for walking everywhere in downtown Asheville. John was very good to work with on checking in and any questions we had.

  • I enjoyed meeting John and his wife, they were delightful. The goal at Gray Rock is to return it to full Inn Status and they are well on their way. The location is excellent with great food and beverage venues within reach and entertainment directly across the way.

The room was quiet, comfortable and priced well for my extended stay.
