About this listing

We have reconstructed a traditional rural adobe home in downtown Cuenca. The street-facing side is our new art gallery, PumamaquiGalerías. Four studio apartments surround a gardened cobblestone courtyard. This listing describes the single-level studio currently available. Serenity and security, with the city just outside your door.

The space

Two features make Pumamaqui Accommodations extraordinary: A beautifully reconstituted adobe building with all new amenities; and a quiet central courtyard that feels like an oasis in the bustle of the city.

Guest access

Broadband WiFi, cable TV, iron and ironing board, abundant hot water, hair dryer, complete kitchen (including toaster, microwave, coffee maker, full refrigerator, plates, pots and pans, cutlery, wine glasses), linens and towels, washer and dryer, interior courtyard and garden with hummingbirds. All utilities are included.

Interaction with guests

Patricia and I are eager for guests to have a memorable experience in Cuenca, and we will be available to help with suggestions about outings, local restaurants and cultural events.

This place is magnificent! The photos can't even do it justice, as the quaintness of the renovation, beautiful interior garden and the comfort of this mini-apartment can't be matched! The bed even has a beautiful and cozy alpaca blanket, as the owners have an alpaca farm. The location is wonderful, right in the central part of Cuenca with lots of great restaurants and interesting places to visit just steps from the front door. Best of all, Stu and Patricia are wonderful hosts, really to answer all questions and provide ideas for travel around the area too. We've had a most wonderful stay and look forward to coming back some day soon.

This is probably the best Airbnb we have stayed at. The location is perfect yet private and safe. Patricia and Stu and their beautiful family are the nicest people. The apartment has everything you need and the inside patio is sooo pleasant. Highly recommended.

I just got back from a marvelous ten day stay in Stu and Patricia's studio flat in Cuenca. They get excellent scores as hosts for the best of all reasons -- their warmth, attentiveness, and quick response to any issue, question or request. I have to agree wholeheartedly with all the great reviews for their spotless and well-equipped apartments. (FYI - Stu and Patricia are the husband and wife owners and Lisa and Chris will be the new caretakers, but at the time I was there, Stu and Patricia were still making sure the turnover would be smooth. I have no doubt that once they hand over the task, Lisa and Chris will be equally attentive and helpful!) The location is perfect for those who want to be centrally located in the historic center. And for runners, the nearby river trails, parks, and long staircases for stair repeats are a wonderful asset. Join the huge crowd of Cuencanos into fitness and running! You will definitely not be alone and will even be encouraged. The only slight issue I had was that the area can get louder on the weekend nights, but that is to be expected in most cities. (A white noise iPhone app easily solved this problem.) Finally, Stu gave me the name of a fantastic, knowledgeably local driver, Angel, who took me around for a couple of days to the outskirts of Cuenca, namely Chordeleg, Sig Sig, and El Cajas. It was definitely easier than renting a car for such a short time. I felt lucky to have found this oasis! Thanks Stu and Patricia.

Stuart and Patricia, who has a shop downstairs with beautiful alpaca products, were most welcoming hosts: warm, friendly, helpful, accommodating. It felt like we were staying with family. Stuart is a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of Cuenca. Location was great, walking distance to great restaurants and important sights. The apartment was exceptionally comfortable, clean, spacious, modern with a wonderful courtyard. They also had a washer & dryer which was a welcome sight. It is hard to imagine a more perfect place in Cuenca. We stayed here a week and would stay here again in a heartbeat! We are already planning a return, longer visit. Thank you for for everything.

Pumamaqui is a wonderful place with beautiful, welcoming apartments and lovely people all around. It is perfectly located with restaurants and sights within easy walking distance. Stuart and Patricia are the perfect hosts; Patricia left a beautiful cheese plate and flowers on the table for my arrival, and they both helped so much with getting around the city, including hiking the parks nearby. They are so interesting too - so much enjoyed talking to them. You will want to know more about their alpacas and the wildlife preserve! However, if you are like me, you will be out enjoying the Cuencano people and smiling continuously as you hike and view the paramo landscape. All just wonderful - highest recommendation!

Stuart was one the best Airbnb hosts I have ever met. He was very responsive, considerate, warm also offered a lot of useful information. When I arrived Stuart‘s apartment, there were beautiful flowers, drinks, a giant/delicious bread and cheese waiting for me. He also introduced his lovely family to me. :) Stuart truely made me feel at home!!! The apartment itself was very clean and the kitchen was well equipped. Because of the high ceiling the room felt more spacious than in the pictures. The location was amazing! Short walking distance to the center of the old town also the river was only 2 blocks away! I really enjoyed staying at Stuart‘s apt. I will love to come back and stay here again!

What could we say about Stu's place? We felt like being at home for the entire length of out stay: the apartments are big and equipped with everything; the location, with its beautifully decorated yard is very quite despite being located in a very central area of Cuenca; but the best part has been getting to know Stu himself: he really made our experience special, doing everything possible to accomodate us and fulfill our requests. He even drove us to the bus station since we were late. Also, being an adopted Ecuadorian since more than 30 years, he will be able to tell you everything you need to know about Cuenca and Ecuador! We will surely be back the next time we will visit this fantastic Country!

Patricia and I are dedicated to wild habitat conservation, in two ways: Since 2000 we support a dynamic local NGO, Fundacion Cordillera Tropical, that does environmental research, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation in the Nudo del Azuay region of Ecuador's Cordillera Real; and we own and protect a large conservation area, the Mazar Wildlife Reserve, in Cañar Province, Ecuador. We have three young children who share these enthusiasms. On the reserve's pastures at lower elevation we maintain a herd of 500 alpacas. We recently restored a patrimonial building with four studio apartments in Cuenca's historic district that we hope will generate fond memories for our visitors from all quarters of the world.
