Stylish House in Heraklion, Crete

House - Entire home/apt · Macherioti, Heraklion, Crete 712 01, Greece

The Space

Our house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete. Its position is ideal for anyone that wants to explore the city itself or indeed the rest of the island with the splendours of Chania, about a two hour drive west of Heraklion, or the charm of Agios Nikolaos, also about a two hour drive to the east of the house.

The property is within the famous Venetian walls and we're only a few minutes walk from Lions Square in the very heart of the city. We're in an old neighbourhood which is surprisingly quiet and peaceful given its central location. Most evenings all you can hear is our jasmine tree lightly fluttering in the gentle breeze when the smells are divine.

We've just spent five months renovating the property which now boasts an efficient solar-panel system for hot water, a brand new contemporary bathroom, satellite TV and WiFi throughout the house.

The house consists of:

Ground Floor: Large reception/dining room, kitchen, hall, toilet, outside toilet (in the small back yard) and outside patio.

First Floor: Large landing space, living room (with French doors to outside balcony), bathroom with shower, bedroom with double bed and French doors to a pretty outside terrace.

There is an Apple Mac computer (with internet connection) in the living room which guests are welcome to use (email hidden) with "OTE TV" subscription (included) so you can get BBC World News, CNBC, France 24 and DW, among many other Greek and International channels. There is also a DVD player (and a selection of movies) (email hidden) system (and a selection of CDs!) with FM tuner. There is FREE fast Wi-Fi available throughout the house. There are land-line telephones in both reception and living rooms, with FREE calls to phone numbers in Greece.

The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, microwave oven-grill, two gas-hobs, electric kettle, toaster and Gaggia espresso coffee maker & coffee grinder... and a washing machine!

Fresh towels and bedding are provided.

There is FREE parking in the tiny street outside the house (and in the area generally) and there is also a public car-park (3€ per day) just around the corner, a few steps from the front door.

There is a handy corner shop at the top of our street for all life's essentials including bread, milk and fresh fruit & vegetables. There is a pharmacy 2 minutes from the house and many other shops including stylish boutiques, banks (with 24hr ATMs), a laundry and a large supermarket.

The colourful 1866 (Market) Street for herbs, Cretan olive-oil, souvenirs and much more is also just a short walk away, as is the fish market for a wide variety of fresh fish and other sea food. There are also plenty of restaurants & tavernas within easy reach and we'll point you in the direction of some our favourites!

Heraklion itself is rich in cultural heritage and we'll be happy to help you get the best from your visit here. The 'Municipality of Heraklion' hosts a wonderful programme of events (music, theatre, film and dance) for its "Summer Festival of Arts" which continues until late September. Most events are held in any one of the four superb open-air theatres within the Venetian Walls - each within easy walking distance of the house.

The famous Knossos Palace is a 20 minute bus ride from a bus-stop just down the street.

For sun-seekers, we recommend the large sandy beach at the lively resort of Ammoudara, a five minute drive or easily accessible by bus, from a Freedom Square near the house. Alternatively, the beaches at Karteros, Kato Gouves, Analipsi and Hersonissos are not far away.

If you'd prefer to explore the island, then Heraklion is a perfect base to do so. With a short drive to the 'National Highway' you'll be on your way east, west or south in no time! There really is so much to do and see here and we'll be delighted to advise you on getting the very best from your visit. The only problem you'll have is finding enough time to fit it all in!

For those of you with business to conduct (meetings, seminars, demonstrations etc.) the downstairs reception room can be easily adapted. It can accommodate around 30 people and there are additional new chairs (see the yellow ones in the photos) in store at the house that can be used for this purpose.

If you require collecting from Heraklion airport or port on arrival, we're happy to pick you up (subject to a cash charge of 10€) and drive you to the house. If you'd like a car waiting for you on arrival we can put you in touch with our preferred car-rental company with very competitive rates!

We look forward to welcoming you very soon!

  • Thank you Clive for a fabulous stay in Heraklion. Not only was the house beautiful but the transfers, welcome treats, orientation walk and helpful information about the sights of Crete and how best to get around were invaluable. All this gave us a rich and unforgettable experience. S&S

  • We have just enjoyed a fantastic week in the Art House in Crete. We had a very warm welcome from Clive and Chantal. Clive was kind enough to pick us up from the airport and walked us around the city when we arrived which really helped us get our bearings. We really appreciated the generous gifts left for us at the house on arrival (food, milk, wine, Christmas treats for the kids) - perfect after a long day of travelling. The house itself was exactly what we were looking for - a home away from home. We were unlucky to have 3 days of cold and rain when we arrived (well we did choose December so what did we expect?) but the kids barely noticed because the house was so much fun and the heaters worked extremely well. It was extremely spacious for a family of four and there were lots of interesting things to do and look at. Art House has been recently restored and is beautifully decorated. Everything felt very new and in perfect working order. Clive was always easy to reach if we had any queries. He made some great restaurant recommendations and he runs a website about the city so is very plugged in to what's going on. The location of the house was perfect for us. It was in an extremely quiet street yet right in the centre of the city so it was an easy walk to anywhere we wanted to visit. December in Heraklion was fantastic - we were practically the only visitors at any tourist attraction and we had some wonderful warm and sunnny days too. We were sorry to leave.

  • Clive's place is charming; he has restored it himself and it is loaded with eclectic signs of his artistic personality. When we arrived he walked us around the local area showing us some places to eat and telling us about the city, which was interesting and helpful, and when we had a minor problem (ran out of hot water) he responded instantly to tell us which switch to flip to get things going again. The house is located a quick walk from a corner market and a longer, but still short, walk from a supermarket, so cooking is convenient; the kitchen is a decent size and we had no trouble cooking meals there. Wi-fi is fast and reliable, the big-screen TV and stereo system are great for relaxing in the evening, and the bedroom is light and airy with a pleasant balcony area.

When we were there the neighbor was doing some remodeling work on the adjacent house which was a bit noisy. I expect that will be finished soon so it may not be an issue. Other than that we had no complaints and if we're back in Heraklion at some point we'll look Clive up again.

  • What a great host! And what a great house! Clive could not have been more generous with his hospitality. And the house was absolutely amazing. I thoroughly recommend both to anyone going to Herkalion.

  • The most important part to me, when it comes to using Airbnb, is talking and learning from the hosts. And Clive and his partner Chantal are wonderful to talk to, very friendly and open, and will offer a lot in the way of getting around and exploring Heraklion.

When I came in Clive and Chantal showed me their house (beautiful, cozy, very well designed...copy what the other reviews have said here) and then they invited me for dinner with them at a very nearby taverna. The food was wonderful...probably the best I had in Heraklion.

If you are coming to Heraklion to look around and want to stay in a unique place that is definitely not a standard hotel experience, and you want hosts who will give you a great introduction to the city with timely suggestions...this is the place to stay!

  • Of the 5 islands and the mainland I visited in Greece, Crete was my overall favorite by far, thanks in great part to my hosts Clive & Chantal. From the moment we met, with Chantal standing her ground with the airport police to load my luggage into the car, to their editorial lecture highlighting the history of the greatest civilization of the ancient world, as we entered the walled city center of Irakleio on the way to their home, I was enchanted and memorized by their genuine love of all things Cretan. Purely infectious, I was transformed to a time when Crete was the epicenter of the known world.

As we meandered through the labyrinth of ancient streets barely 5 feet wide, within the 13th C Venetian walls,we arrived at the house. You are immediately assaulted by the overwhelming smell from the jasmine vines that cling to the gated entry. Understated from the outside, you enter a truly magnificent 16C structure (a former monastery) with 14 foot ceilings, impeccable decorated. This is not a vacation rental. This is a home that has been careful restored to perfection with love by Clive & Chantal.

The photos of the listing do it no justice. As you explore the two levels, you find windows that open to hidden terraces with varying views of the neighborhood. Quiet, quaint, and magical is no exaggeration. Every creature comfort you think you have left behind suddenly materializes. If you're a chef, then you have every imaginable gadget you need, in the well outfitted kitchen. Not to mention a dining room, with the original tile flooring, that could easily seat 12-16 comfortably. Simply stated the home is stunning.

I dropped off my luggage, and Clive & Chantal walked me to their favorite local eatery for dinner, a few blocks away downhill. I ate every meal there when not traveling about the island. The Cretan cuisine was my favorite in all of Greece.

A block further down from the eatery, you are in the heart of Irakleio. A 10 min walk down to the Plateia Eleftheriou Venizelou, the pedestrian zone of shops and cafes. From here another 5 mins walk along 25 Avgoustou and you’re facing the Venetian fortress Rocca al Mare. Also a 10 min walk NE from the home, and you’re at the Archeology Museum, which houses the world’s greatest collection of Minoan artifacts.

I also rented a car and drove east to experience all the towns along Mirabellou Bay-Agios Nikolaos, Elounta, including Plaka-Spinalonga island and its 14th C Venetian fortress. So drive its easy, with a fast new highway-55 mins.

I have to return and stay here again, and explore the west end of Crete, from the central location of this home.

I came to Crete to experience its history, its way of life, its nightlife, and its people.

No hotel could have provided the enchantment, insight, independence or comfort that Clive & Chantal’s home allowed me.

Their home truly embodies the best of the airbnb community!

  • We had a really nice time staying at Clive's house in Heraklion. It's located in a tiny, quiet street, but very near the center of the action in the old town, so great if you want to walk to dinner and shopping! The only problem is that the place is very, very hard to find (because it's on such a tiny street) so definitely take Clive up on his other of driving you back from the airport! The house is gorgeous and spacious, and Clive makes you feel hugely welcome - he left us a bunch of breakfast items, tons of bottled water, and even a bottle of wine and fruits to share when we arrived. Fresh towels all the time... etc. There isn't any AC, so the house does get pretty warm - the fact there are lots of windows and fans does help though. Clive is super nice and easy to deal with, straightforward and reliable. I definitely recommend the place - it felt like a steal for the quality of the accomodation!
    Happy travels to Crete -

  • We had great time in this house. Absulately amazing ! It's clean, nicely decorated, spacious and has everything that you would have in your own house with a lot of suprises that would make you smile. It's location is just two minutes walk to the main street of Heraklion, Fish Market, Cafes, Restaurants. The house was cool enough even in the 34 degree thanks to the ceiling fans at the dining room and the TV room upstairs and has its own breeze which makes it perfectly comfortable at the bedroom. The kitchen was well stocked (even fresh coffee beans, a grinder and a pressure espresso machine), all paper products, laundry supplies, etc. and the flowers were wonderful. Clive was super accommodating, great at replying to communications and met us right on time. I can't say enough good things about this place and its hosts. It was a great start for our 10 day trip.

  • Clive's house was spotless clean and tastefully well furnished. It is huge with high ceilings and several rooms to fit the mood of the moment. It was a treat to stay there for a few nights; would definately have stayed more if schedule permitted. Clive offered a small walking tour of the neighborhood which was nice to start off in the wonderful city of Heraklion.

Hello, my name is Clive. My partner's name is Chantal and we live on the beautiful island of Crete. I'm an artist originally from England and Chantal is from Belgium. We met here about 4 years ago and take life a little easier now. We have a house in the country, not far from Heraklion, and earlier this year we also acquired this old town house in Heraklion. It's a great place to stay when we're in town as it is so central. Just a few minutes walk and we're in Lions Square, the very hub of the city! We have just finished renovating the house which took us almost six months to complete, and our plan is to offer it to family when they visit us and to other guests who might like a central place to stay when visiting the fascinating island of Crete. We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
