Our recently renovated house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, in a quiet old neighbourhood. Its position is ideal for those who want to explore the city itself and also great for exploring the rest of the island.
Our house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete. Its position is ideal for anyone that wants to explore the city itself and indeed the rest of the island with the splendours of Chania, about a two hour drive west of Heraklion, or the charm of Agios Nikolaos, about an hour and a half drive east of the house.
The property is within the famous Venetian walls and we're only a few minutes walk from Lions Square in the very heart of the city. We're in an old neighbourhood which is surprisingly quiet and peaceful given its central location. Most evenings all you can hear is our jasmine tree lightly fluttering in the gentle breeze, when the smells are divine.
We spent five months last year renovating the property which now boasts an efficient solar-panel system for hot water, a brand new contemporary bathroom, satellite TV and WiFi throughout the house.
The house consists of:
Ground Floor: Large reception/dining room, kitchen, hall, toilet, outside toilet (in the small back yard) and outside patio.
First Floor: Large landing space, living room (with French doors to outside balcony), bathroom with shower, bedroom with double bed and French doors to a pretty outside terrace.
There is an Apple Mac computer (with internet connection) in the living room which guests are welcome to use, a TV with "OTE TV" subscription (included) so you can get BBC World News, CNBC, France 24 and DW, among many other Greek and International channels. There is also a DVD player (and a selection of movies) stereo system (and a selection of CDs) with FM tuner. There is FREE fast Wi-Fi available throughout the house. There are land-line telephones in both reception and living rooms, with FREE calls to phone numbers within Greece, which are perfect for ordering delivered take-out food!
The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, microwave with oven-grill, two gas-hobs, electric kettle, bread toaster and Gaggia espresso coffee maker & coffee grinder... and a washing machine!
Fresh towels and bedding are provided.
There is also an iron, an ironing board and hair-dryer available for your use.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the countryside about 25 minutes from the house and are always on call should you need help or advice during your stay.
There is FREE parking in the tiny street at the house (and in the area generally) and there is also a public car-park (3€ per day) just around the corner, a few steps from the front door.
There is a handy corner shop at the top of our street for all life's essentials including bottled water, bread, milk and fresh fruit & vegetables. There is a pharmacy 2 minutes from the house and many other shops including stylish boutiques, banks (with 24hr ATMs), a laundry and a large supermarket.
The colourful 1866 (Market) Street for herbs, Cretan olive-oil, souvenirs and much more is also just a short walk away, as is the fish market for a wide variety of fresh fish and other sea food. There are also plenty of restaurants & tavernas within easy reach and we'll point you in the direction to some our favourites!
Heraklion itself is rich in cultural heritage and we'll be happy to help you get the best from your visit here. The 'Municipality of Heraklion' hosts a wonderful programme of events (music, theatre, film and dance) for its "Summer Festival of Arts", July to September. Most events are held in any one of the four superb open-air theatres within the Venetian Walls - each within easy walking distance of the house.
The famous Knossos Palace is a 20 minute bus ride on the No.2 from a nearby bus-stop.
For sun-seekers, we recommend the large sandy beach at the lively resort of Ammoudara, a ten minute drive or easily accessible by bus, the No.6 from Freedom Square, near the house. Alternatively, the beaches at Karteros, Kato Gouves, Analipsi and Hersonissos are not far away.
If you'd prefer to explore the island, then Heraklion is a perfect base to do so. With a short drive to the 'National Highway' you'll be on your way east, west or south in no time! There really is so much to do and see here and we'll be delighted to advise you on getting the very best from your visit. The only problem you'll have is finding enough time to fit it all in!
Other Things to Note
If you require collecting from Heraklion airport or the port on arrival, we're be happy to pick you up and drive you to the house. If you'd prefer a car waiting for you on arrival we can put you in touch with our preferred car-rental companies. Alternatively, we can advise you where to go to hire a car after your arrive, when you've maybe had time to settle in a bit!
We will make sure that there is a complimentary bottle of wine on the table to welcome you and that there is plenty enough in the fridge for a good Cretan breakfast!
For those of you with business to conduct (meetings, seminars, demonstrations etc.) the downstairs reception room can be easily adapted. It can accommodate around 30 people and there are additional new chairs (see the yellow ones in the photos) in store at the house that can be used for this purpose.
We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
All we ask is that you respect our house and property like your own. We've stayed in many places with Airbnb ourselves and we've always tidied before leaving, so we'd be really pleased if you'd do that for us too!
We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
Sincerely, Clive & Chantal.
We spent a whole month in Clives and Chantals Arthouse (or "Villa Giselle" as it is named after Clives godmother) in Heraklion and we felt very much at home. The house is in a nice quite area of the city, only five minutes walking to the lively city center. The house is newly renovated, very clean and very tasteful furnished and decorated with all kinds of personal little things, pictures, paintings, clocks of all kind. The place is well equipped with all things necessary for a comfortable daily live and the lovely owners are really a special treat: Clive picked us up at the airport (and drove us back on our last day), he showed us around, sent us to his favorite restaurants and was always there for any questions. We often made use of his website (website hidden), where you find all kind of interesting tips around Crete. Chantal brought us clean sheets and towels and was also very nice to talk to. We had a really good time and would recommend "Villa Giselle" to everyone, who comes to Crete.
Our stay in Clive's house was delightful! The house was just as we thought it would be and was bright, clean and situated in the heart of Heraklion, which was very cnvenient for us (we didn't rent a car and did everything by foot in the city centre). Our host welcomed us very warmly, gave us a lot of useful information and was very thoughtful! The house itself is comfortable (well, the bed and the couches are), well equiped and nice to spend time in. The terraces are of course enjoyable given the weather in Heraklion. We had a great time and are grateful that we found this place! Thanks for everything Clide, we hope to see you again soon!
Clive was the perfect host to us. Not only did he pick us up from, and drive us back to the airport, but he gave us a tour of the local neighborhood, with great advice on places to eat, shop and visit. He left us lots of provisions in the house, as well as lovely Greek wine. And he was available to answer any queries we had.
The accommodations were very comfortable, and beautifully furnished. We appreciated having a washing machine to use.
We loved Heraklion, the food, wonderful produce, great shopping and a great place for long walks. The weather was great, walm to hot by day, but with cool breezes at night.
We can highly recommend this accommodation.
Thanks very much Clive and Chantal.
We stayed 7 days in the 'art house' we. Clive gave him to the airport early, and even though our time. Of course, when we arrived in Crete. He kindly gave it a good place to introduce throughout the neighborhood, had a good time in the place we are.
It is very attractive and charming place "art house" is. The comfort of home to three baths and an outdoor terrace, a living room, the cool breeze, until there is a cute kitchen. There is a good walk around and close to downtown. Provided everything we needed was very clean house. We thank him for the food and wine prepared for us.
We did not study for the Crete. He was a little shame, but we did not know about the more interesting because in Crete. :)
Crete weather was hard to get too hot. But will remain unforgettable, thanks to the friendly people of Clive and he who introduced the restaurant.
I did well in English too bad I can not share with you properly say goodbye.
Would have passed on my mind if I saw my eyes. ^ _ ^
Clive and art houses, Knossos Palace, Museum, Castle Road, Nikos Kazantzakis grave ... and friendly people of Crete.
We'll miss all this!
This was the first time I used airbnb and I couldn't have chosen a more perfect start. As others have commented before me, Clive really goes out of his way to make his guests feel welcome and ensure you have all you need. From picking me up at the airport late in the evening, to providing a kitchen stocked with the basics for breakfast the next day, to emailing me useful tips throughout the week on what to do and see - Clive does it all. The house was spotless and as stunning as the pictures suggest, a real gem, and a unique blend of Cretan lifestyle and artistic quirkiness. And while you do hear the neighbours during the day (hardly surprising when everybody has their windows open in an attempt to find a cross-breeze to cope with the August heat), at night the house is a peaceful oasis - all a bare 5 minute stroll from the attractions of the bustling city centre. My only regret is that I didn't see more of the island in the week I was there; I just spent so much time enjoying the house and all that Heraklion has to offer. All the more reason to come back, in which case I would certainly stay here again.
This is a beautiful property, well situated but quiet and with everything you need for your stay in Heraklion. Clive and Chantal have completed a stylish renovation and are consummate hosts who leave lots of little extras. For the heat sensitive, there is no AC, but good fans and large airy rooms mostly shaded. Absolutely charming: recommend.
We stayed at Clive and Chantal's 'Art House' for ten days this July. We were attracted by the beautiful pictures of the house and it's central location in Heraklion. What we didn't bargain for was the warmth and hospitality of our hosts who went well out of their way to make us feel welcome and entreated us to make ourselves at home: meeting us from the airport was well appreciated especially as Clive brought ice cold water with him in the heat of the midday sun! The house was well-stocked with fresh provisions and a luscious fruit bowl and bottle of rather lovely local wine.
Clive took us on a short walking tour to help us find our bearings around town. This was like having your own personal tour guide as he is so knowledgeable about the local area (and runs a useful local website). Recommendations for places to eat we're spot-on and such good value for money. In particular the restaurant Peskesi was a real treat for our wedding anniversary dinner - spectacular food in a fantastic restored old building - thanks for the tip Clive.
But I guess most of you want to know about the comfort of the accommodation! This was fantastic and we made good use of the small terrace outside the bedroom, morning and evening. My husband enjoyed having a base to come back and watch the Tour de France on a decent telly, and I found one of my most favourite CDs in the rack so I was in heaven!
Thanks again Clive and Chantal for your friendship and hospitality. If you are ever in Bedford,UK please look us up - we owe you a drink!!
Hello, my name is Clive. My partner's name is Chantal and we live on the beautiful island of Crete. I'm an artist originally from England and Chantal is from Belgium. We met here about 4 years ago and take life a little easier now. We have a house in the country, not far from Heraklion, and earlier this year we also acquired this old town house in Heraklion. It's a great place to stay when we're in town as it is so central. Just a few minutes walk and we're in Lions Square, the very hub of the city! We have just finished renovating the house which took us almost six months to complete, and our plan is to offer it to family when they visit us and to other guests who might like a central place to stay when visiting the fascinating island of Crete. We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
