About this listing
Our recently renovated house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, in a quiet old neighbourhood. Its position is ideal for those who want to explore the city itself and also great for exploring the rest of the island.
Our house is situated in the centre of Heraklion, the capital city of Crete. Its position is ideal for anyone that wants to explore the city itself and indeed the rest of the island with the splendours of Chania, about a two hour drive west of Heraklion, or the charm of Agios Nikolaos, about an hour and a half drive east of the house.
The property is within the famous Venetian walls and we're only a few minutes walk from Lions Square in the very heart of the city. We're in an old neighbourhood which is surprisingly quiet and peaceful given its central location. Most evenings all you can hear is our jasmine tree lightly fluttering in the gentle breeze, when the smells are divine.
We spent five months last year renovating the property which now boasts an efficient solar-panel system for hot water, a brand new contemporary bathroom, satellite TV and WiFi throughout the house.
The house consists of:
Ground Floor: Large reception/dining room, kitchen, hall, toilet, outside toilet (in the small back yard) and outside patio.
First Floor: Large landing space, living room (with French doors to outside balcony), bathroom with shower, bedroom with double bed and French doors to a pretty outside terrace.
There is an Apple Mac computer (with internet connection) in the living room which guests are welcome to use, a TV with "OTE TV" subscription (included) so you can get BBC World News, CNBC, France 24 and DW, among many other Greek and International channels. There is also a DVD player (and a selection of movies) stereo system (and a selection of CDs) with FM tuner. There is FREE fast Wi-Fi available throughout the house. There are land-line telephones in both reception and living rooms, with FREE calls to phone numbers within Greece, which are perfect for ordering delivered take-out food!
The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, microwave with oven-grill, two gas-hobs, electric kettle, bread toaster and Gaggia espresso coffee maker & coffee grinder... and a washing machine!
Fresh towels and bedding are provided.
There is also an iron, an ironing board and hair-dryer available for your use.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the countryside about 25 minutes from the house and are always on call should you need help or advice during your stay.
There is FREE parking in the tiny street at the house (and in the area generally) and there is also a public car-park (3€ per day) just around the corner, a few steps from the front door.
There is a handy corner shop at the top of our street for all life's essentials including bottled water, bread, milk and fresh fruit & vegetables. There is a pharmacy 2 minutes from the house and many other shops including stylish boutiques, banks (with 24hr ATMs), a laundry and a large supermarket.
The colourful 1866 (Market) Street for herbs, Cretan olive-oil, souvenirs and much more is also just a short walk away, as is the fish market for a wide variety of fresh fish and other sea food. There are also plenty of restaurants & tavernas within easy reach and we'll point you in the direction to some our favourites!
Heraklion itself is rich in cultural heritage and we'll be happy to help you get the best from your visit here. The 'Municipality of Heraklion' hosts a wonderful programme of events (music, theatre, film and dance) for its "Summer Festival of Arts", July to September. Most events are held in any one of the four superb open-air theatres within the Venetian Walls - each within easy walking distance of the house.
The famous Knossos Palace is a 20 minute bus ride on the No.2 from a nearby bus-stop.
For sun-seekers, we recommend the large sandy beach at the lively resort of Ammoudara, a ten minute drive or easily accessible by bus, the No.6 from Freedom Square, near the house. Alternatively, the beaches at Karteros, Kato Gouves, Analipsi and Hersonissos are not far away.
If you'd prefer to explore the island, then Heraklion is a perfect base to do so. With a short drive to the 'National Highway' you'll be on your way east, west or south in no time! There really is so much to do and see here and we'll be delighted to advise you on getting the very best from your visit. The only problem you'll have is finding enough time to fit it all in!
Other Things to Note
If you require collecting from Heraklion airport or the port on arrival, we're be happy to pick you up and drive you to the house. If you'd prefer a car waiting for you on arrival we can put you in touch with our preferred car-rental companies. Alternatively, we can advise you where to go to hire a car after your arrive, when you've maybe had time to settle in a bit!
We will make sure that there is a complimentary bottle of wine on the table to welcome you and that there is plenty enough in the fridge for a good Cretan breakfast!
For those of you with business to conduct (meetings, seminars, demonstrations etc.) the downstairs reception room can be easily adapted. It can accommodate around 30 people and there are additional new chairs (see the yellow ones in the photos) in store at the house that can be used for this purpose.
We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
All we ask is that you respect our house and property like your own. We've stayed in many places with Airbnb ourselves and we've always tidied before leaving, so we'd be really pleased if you'd do that for us too!
We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
Sincerely, Clive & Chantal.
Clive was a gracious, thoughtful and charismatic host from beginning to end. It is obvious that he goes to great lengths to prepare for his renters: he put together a selection of literature on pretty much anything I might want to know about Heraklion, from transportation to take out, and gave me many excellent recommendations himself re dining in the area, day trips around the island, and so on. I don't think I could have fit half of them into my week on Crete even if I had done nothing else.
His home is charming, spacious, beautifully decorated, and truly fully furnished (including a full range of kitchenware and tableware, a cart bag for shopping, an iron and ironing board, and so on). Clive even had some essentials waiting for me in the fridge and pantry after he drove me over to his place and gave me a tour of the house and neighborhood before leaving me to my own judgement.
The house is indeed situated in a quiet part of town that is nonetheless only a few minutes walking distance to areas at the center of town (i.e. Lion's Square, Liberty Square) and major bus lines (I didn't rent a car so I'm not sure how that would work out, but the parking is pretty tight during the day).
I was completely satisfied. Clive is a great guy who I hope to see again some day and his home is a treasure. Don't miss it- its a fantastic place at a price that is well beyond generous. Cheers to Clive and cheers to sunny Crete!
Clive is an amazing host, he picked us up from the bus station and took us back there at the end of our stay. On arriving he gave us a tour of the surrounding district, giving us information about where to eat etc. The house was lovely, beautifully furnished and very comfortable. We loved sitting in the courtyard to eat our breakfast every morning. Clive had generously provided many items of food and drink for our stay. A great central, but quiet location, perfect for a break in Heraklion.
Clive was a fantastic host. He met us at the ferry terminal and drove us to the Arthouse where a welcoming bowl of fruit and a bottle of wine was waiting. He gave us a complete tour of the neighborhood and recommended some great places to eat. The home is exactly as pictured in the images – very clean and complete with everything that was needed for our week-long stay. On checkout Clive drove me to the airport, certainly above and beyond what I normally expect from an Airbnb host.
We thoroughly enjoyed Clive's house. It is beautifully decorated and interesting while being quiet and comfortable despite being in a busy urban location. It was well equipped and Clive had generously provided some food staples and wine. The location is interesting away from the tourist area, yet within easy walking distance to the attractions. Clive showed us around the house and then a walking tour of the locale to get us orientated. Yes, we would definitely recommend "Arthouse".
Clive and Chantal are amazing hosts. They are warm, generous, thoughtful and genuinely care about people and go beyond expectations to make the stay in their charming Arthouse hassle-free and very relaxing.
They made us feel like we were staying in a friend's home rather than a rental and had provided everything we needed to make us feel we had made a smart decision choosing their home for our stay in Heraklion.
We have already recommended them and their home to family and friends and would gladly choose them as hosts again.
Thank you Clive and Chantal for a memorable stay in your wonderful home.
Clive not only made us very welcome on arrival there was nothing he hadn’t thought of in his delightful ARTHOUSE 6 residence.
The house itself is a wonderfully restored enchanting creation of an art-deco bygone era. Clive’s extra care in providing every possible amenity and little luxuries was exemplary and his introductory walking tour within the old Venetian City walls left us with a wealth of knowledge with which to wonder the old city streets, squares, harbour front, galleries and Museums. Clive particularly mentioned the Historical Museum on the harbour front where we spent an absorbing half day (a delightful coffee shop within).
There is a plethora of cafes and restaurants in Heraklion. Clive’s recommendations for his ‘special local haunts’ made the enjoyment of Crete’s cuisine all the more pleasurable. Dimitrie’s, just a block from ARTHOUSE 6, and 50/50 Café on Market St a short stroll away, were a real treat both culturally and for local cuisine. Clive’s Web and Facebook page “Now Heraklion” is a ‘must read’ for newcomers to Crete’s capital and is recommended in the listed 10 best things on Crete.
We were sad to leave ARTHOUSE 6 and trust that Clive will welcome us again when we next visit for a longer stay. Needless to say we will be singing the praises of the residence, Heraklion and Crete for years to come.

About the Host, Clive
Hello, my name is Clive. My partner's name is Chantal and we live on the beautiful island of Crete. I'm an artist originally from England and Chantal is from Belgium. We met here about 5 years ago and take life a little easier now. We have a house in the country, not far from Heraklion, and in 2013 we also acquired this old town house in Heraklion. It's a great place to stay when we're in town as it is so central. Just a few minutes walk and we're in Lions Square, the very hub of the city! We have just finished renovating the house which took us almost six months to complete, and our plan is to offer it to family when they visit us and to other guests who might like a central place to stay when visiting the fascinating island of Crete. We look forward to welcoming you very soon!
