Interaction with Guests
As your hosts, we want you to have a wonderful stay while visiting this retreat setting.
We live below the rental space. We cherish the tranquility of the property and our own privacy as much as we respect those same needs for our guest's ultimate benefit. That said, we are happy to assist you with requests and we are here to help in any way we can. Otherwise, we will not be seen or heard unless you want to see or speak with us.
The house is located in a very quiet, residential area at the end of a private road. The house itself is perched on the edge of a canyon and borders wilderness area. Most of the homeowners are retired and many are only here part-time. There are many wild critters in the area including deer, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, coyote, skunk, wild boar as well as (a few venomous and) many harmless reptiles. We have abundant bird life in the area and are fortunate enough to have a bird's eye view of a Redtail Hawk's nest used every year by a mated pair of hawks. We cherish and respect all of the inhabitants of the area... human, and especially furred, feathered and scaled. Please tread lightly on their land.
There is no public transportation in our neighborhood. Free, safe parking is available on the street next to the driveway. There is taxi service (expensive) and an Airport Shuttle service available. We will provide you with their website for costs and schedules.
Other Things to Note
Cell phone reception at the house and in the neighborhood is unreliable and often unavailable. You are provided with a phone that accepts incoming calls and allows you to make local calls.
We are animal lovers and have four cats and two small, well behaved dogs. You are welcome to enjoy them outdoors or ignore them. If you are also an animal lover, we ask that you help us continue to keep your space free from pet fur and dander by keeping our pets outside and making sure to keep screens and doors closed... We would not want to have your vacation dampened by their potentially unwanted behavior towards your belongings. If you do interact with our pets, we also request that you do not give them food as they are all on special diets.
There will be days (especially in Summer) when the ocean and even the canyon are obscured by fog. Sometimes we are in sunshine while most of the peninsula is in fog. There is no knowing and no guarantee when it comes to weather or visibility... all part of the adventure and the mystery.
Contact us prior to making reservations if you have special needs, concerns or feel it necessary to negotiate any terms or prices. Please keep in mind that unlike most places, we do not raise our prices during peak seasons or when special events come to town.
No more than two guests on the premises (unless special arrangements have been made prior to making reservations)... Please meet up with friends elsewhere.
By booking the guest studio, you agree to read the house manual provided in the space, which includes guidelines, instructions and more upon your arrival.
No cigarette or cigar smoking indoors or anywhere on the property.
No pets, please. We have plenty for you to enjoy!
This is a very quiet residential area. Please be respectful of and courteous to our neighbors with regard to noise, driving speed and parking.
Sorry, no children under the age of 12... We live on the edge of a canyon and there are no guard rails.
When cooking in the kitchen of the studio, we ask that you refrain from cooking fish.
No RV parking.
Much of California is enduring severe water shortages. We ask that you PLEASE be mindful and conservative in your water usage.
Our WiFi is not strong enough for streaming, downloading/watching movies on your computer or using video conferencing. It is fine for checking email. This is a great place to unplug!
What a great experience! Kevin and Jill are gracious hosts. We arrived to a warm home in a great location (and great views). Jill had her telescope aimed at two 6-week old hawks which were readying to leave the nest - a magic moment to view. It is a crime that we completely overbooked activities in Monterey and did not plan time for the hiking trails which start just 100 yards away - leading to secluded spots, or even down to the beach. I guess that will be the objective of our next trip!
HawksPerch Haven was nothing short of amazing!!! The beautiful living space, nature scenery and the terrific hosts, Kevin and Jill, made our first experience in Carmel better than we could have imagined. We just got back home today and are already checking our calendars to see when we can head back.
To say that Kevin and Jill were merely warm and welcoming would be an understatement. From initial booking through our stay, they were communicative, helpful, and went out of their way to be sure our time there was everything we imagined it to be. Their "Haven" is a very special place — private, relaxing, and completely surrounded by nature — it has all the things you need for a comfortable and recharging stay. It was impeccably clean, modernized and had the perfect level of coziness for a romantic getaway. My boyfriend and I felt very lucky to find this place for it's central location to Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur, views of the canyon AND ocean, privacy, access to the outdoors right outside our doorstep, as well as a full kitchen (we had a birthday to celebrate so baking a proper cake was in order!). Kevin and Jill had many recommendations of places to eat and visit too. Their house manual is really something — a full run down of everything you'd want to know about the area (Kevin should know - she grew up right in Carmel Valley) — including directions to a private beach spot right near their house (completely picturesque!). These hosts gave us all the space and privacy we wanted to explore and enjoy our vacation, while being completely available and accommodating to us at the same time. This balance is a fine line and they nailed it. On top of that, they greeted us with an absolutely beautiful gift basket that made us feel right at home. We wanted nothing more than to stay longer and hope desperately to be back sooner rather than later. Do yourself a favor and book NOW!
Pictures do not do justice to this cozy studio for two - Hawks Perch Haven sits at the edge of beautiful canyon in a quiet neighborhood - a true retreat for the nature lover.
Kevin and Jill were wonderful hosts and very prompt and precise in their email communication. They had great local dining recommendations for us and helpful insider tips/suggestions for things to do while in the area. Since the other listing from them was not booked at the time we checked-in, we were graciously offered the use of the outdoor hot tub; and the patio to enjoy the sunset over the ocean. We loved waking up to the sound of birds chirping outside our window and taking long walks in the private canyon trail behind the house during our stay.
It's evident that Kevin and Jill have put in a lot of thought and TLC into the studio, it is well-appointed and has everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. The location was perfect too - be it driving south to explore Big Sur or heading north towards Monterey/Carmel - everything was a quick 10-15 min drive away.
We look forward to coming back here and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway!
Hawk Perch Heaven is nestled on the slopes of the mountain canyon with stunning views. The studio is tastefully decorated and EVERYTHING you need is there at your fingertips. It's spotlessly clean, well maintained and very comfortable. The small kitchenette is well stocked...all the tools you need are there. We really felt right at home. It's an easy drive to Carmel, 5 minutes from Point Lobos, yet off the beaten path enough that you can enjoy the wilderness.
This one of a kind studio is extremely secluded and backs to hundreds of acres of beautiful canyon. You will experience the benefits of being in an extremely private setting - yet still being in such close proximity to Carmel and Big Sur. What makes this studio unique are the hostesses, Kevin and Jill. They really take care of you and pamper you with many subtle touches. We loved their Manual that provided useful information about the area. When you are there, try to go to Pfeiffer Beach, it's less than an hour drive from the HawkPerch Haven Studio. The most beautiful beach in California.
Will definitely be looking to stay again!
Highly recommended for a couples getaway.
HawksPerch was a wonderful experience and would return there in a second! Kevin and Jill were terrific hosts. All of the correspondences were clear, thoughtful and timely. We were running late for check-in and I called Jill before we were suppose to arrive. She was incredibly accommodating and even made some recommendations for places to stop on the drive down.
The room was exactly as advertised; it was warm, private, clean and well-maintained. The kitchen was sufficiently stocked with plates, utensils, a toaster, microwave and blender--everything needed for a short stay. The neighborhood was sparsely and quietly populate as it mostly was filled with seasonal houses. I was worried about being in a densely populated neighborhood and not having enough privacy, but this was not a problem. We never saw a car once driving to or from the neighborhood.
What an incredible first time Airbnb experience! Jill and Kevin went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The Hawks Perch Haven was clean, cozy, and welcoming with a gorgeous view! There was a lovely gift basket waiting for us upon our arrival with delicious goodies including some wine!
Kevin and Jill also recommended some wonderful restaurants and beautiful places for my girlfriend and I to explore during our stay. We really didn't want to leave!! I would definitely recommend this place to any couple looking for a relaxing getaway. I'm sure someday we will come back for another visit!

About the Host, Kevin
I was one of three girls with the name of Kevin in my high school graduating class.
I feel blessed to live with my partner of eleven years on this sacred piece of land at the edge of wilderness overlooking a canyon and the ocean. My wife Jill & I write and create various expressions of art while care taking the property, our menagerie of pets and other creatures that also call our property home.
We love sharing our blessings with like-minded people who appreciate and can benefit from “fillin' up” their souls with the many gifts this property offers.
