We are both retired. For 20 years I (Kathryn) taught high school English in our small town in southeastern Utah. The last 10 years of my educational career were spent as the director of San Juan School District's Heritage Language/ Culture Center, where we created Navajo language and culture curriculum materials for use in K-12 classrooms. Winston is an archaeologist specializing in the prehistoric cultures of the southwest. We have been married 47 years and have three children and six grandchildren. They are all growing up way too fast. We both enjoy reading, hiking, and exploring new places.
I could not live without my sewing machine. I consider myself a compulsive quilter. I make eight to ten full size quilts every year, and I'm part of a small group of women who make baby quilts for mothers in need. We make and gift about 75 baby quilts every year.
Winston's vocation is also his avocation. He could not live without his hiking boots. He loves to hike in the deserts and canyons in southeastern Utah to find and document archaeological sites. I sometimes have a hard time convincing him to travel because he sincerely believes there's no better place to be than right where he is.
It would be difficult for me to live without my step aerobics class. Our small town has a little recreation center, where I attend class three mornings per week.
We're not the most talkative couple in the world, although we do enjoy good conversation. Our taste in movies runs the exact opposite of fast moving, video game-like action. Is it a sign of age that we like things quiet and "real"?
We haven't traveled tons, but probably our favorite destination was Western Samoa in 2004. We stayed for a month, and our accommodations were private homes along the beach because there simply were no hotels. We understand it has changed and has become much more commercialized now. This Christmas season all our children were going to be somewhere else for the holidays, so we went on a road trip to southern Arizona. We just drove where the road took us, mostly through the Sonoran Desert to small towns. It was lovely.
