Experience a stay in a traditional Japanese house, tucked inside the forested mountains of the Yoshino Valley. This converted farmhouse is located in Kawakami Village, the source of the Yoshino/Kino river. The house sits just above an idyllic swimming spot, perfect for families to enjoy the cool, clear waters

Guests will have the full property to themselves, which includes a handmade cedar bathtub with views across the river. There is also outdoor space to enjoy barbecuing under the stars.

Other things to note
As the house sits deep inside the forest, there are no shops within walking distance. However – at no extra cost – we will provide locally sourced ingredients for your breakfast (Western or Japanese-style) and dinner, and show you how to cook with the traditional kamado stove. The house is also stocked with locally roasted tea and coffee beans which you can grind.

This stay is perfect for those looking to enjoy a slice of local life, and take it slow in a rustic Japanese village getaway.

There is no public transport which takes you directly to the property. For those arriving by public transport, we can arrange a free pick-up from the nearest train station, Yamato-Kamiichi station, between 3pm and 8pm. This station is on the Kintetsu Yoshino line, which connects to Osaka Abenobashi. The drive takes around 40 minutes.

We can also drop you off at this station upon your departure. Please note – for those who would like to use the drop off service, the car will leave the property at 10am, earlier than the listed checkout time of 11am.

The property is perfect for those looking for a calm getaway and to enjoy nature – you can spend time relaxing on the hammock or tatami mats, and swimming in the river.

We also offer a traditional taru barrel making experience, where you can try your hand at creating a lunchbox or small barrel using local cedarwood at a workshop next door to the property. This can be booked for an additional fee on the Airbnb Experience page.

For those interested in hiking, the beautiful Mount Odaigahara can be reached in about 45 minutes by car.

Where you’ll be

Yoshino District, 奈良県, Japan

HANARE is located in a village in southern Nara prefecture, between the Omine Mountains and the Daiko Mountains.
With the ultimate source of the Yoshino/Kino River in nearby Odaigahara, Kawakami Village is blessed with overwhelming nature and water.
This village was also once the heart of the Yoshino cedar industry.
With 96% of the village being forest and the remaining 4% consisting of roads and houses, it is as if people are just renting a small space from nature.
So it's the real countryside, not just half-way.
It takes 0 seconds to walk from the lodge to the mountains, and 40 minutes to drive to the convenience store.
(By the way, it takes 1 minute to walk to the river down below)
Although there is "nothing but nature" out here, HANARE allows you to harness that natural power and feel how fantastic and fun it is to create your life with your own hands.
Inconvenient things can be easily overcome with patience and in due time. This is that kind of place.
