Home away Home is as the name suggests, a home away from your own home. Mufi, an articulate and knowledgeable psychology lecturer and her husband, Doctor RJK, an interesting and highly intelligent senior surgeon, welcomed us into their beautiful 7 story architecturally designed home in January 2017. Nestled into a steep hillside in an affluent suburb with brilliant views across Kandy, myself and two friends occupied the top three floors of the brightly colored house.
We entered through a secure gate into a flourishing garden and proceeded into the house through the second of the three floors. The first floor is a large open plan living area with a kitchen, dining table and lounge area with large windows providing stunning views across Kandy. One side of this floor branches off to an indoor courtyard through which is a spacious master bedroom with a clean ensuite with a large shower and readily available hot water.
The second floor is the entry level floor from the street and also pertains to an enclosed observatory that spans nearly the length of the house and overlooks Kandy. The third floor has two bedrooms connected through an adjoining bathroom. One bedroom has a balcony that over looks the well maintained front yard and street, the other a balcony that overlooks Kandy. Also on this level is a rooftop terrace that is half shaded and half open with a range of potted plants and spectacular views over Kandy.
Whilst there is AC in the rooms, we felt no need to use it because the house itself is cooled by fresh breezes and fans to move the air. The wifi is strong throughout the house, particularly in the first floor main living area.
Breakfast was included in our stay and we benefited from Mufi and her helper's amazing cooking. For two of our three breakfasts we opted for a Sri Lankan breakfast, which comprised of fruit, string hoppers, coconut nann, ordinary nann, mallung, dahl and a range of other curries. One breakfast we had a traditional English breakfast comprising of fruit, eggs, baked beans, toast and sausages. Tea was available throughout the day and there was a water cooler for our use so that we did not have to purchase bottled water.
Mufi herself went above and beyond to make us comfortable in her house and to assist us in organizing activities in and around Kandy. She provided us with numerous options for things to do in Kandy and was well connected in the community. Under her guidance we visited a number of well known and lesser known attractions as well as eateries and more. Usefully, she connected us with a friendly tuk tuk driver who was available at a reasonable rate.
We cannot recommend Home away Home highly enough.
