The Space

It's a renovated basement space with private entrance and within a block of light-rail and restaurant core. We've retained some old soul of the 1923 home and accented with creative pieces. You'll find it practical AND funky, with lots of light and space.

Guest Access

Included are a bedroom, Full-size bed, private custom-built bathroom, living room, fridge/micro/coffee/dinnerware and full laundry. The space also includes use (email hidden) (though we have a shared yard with our neighbors).

You'll have keyless entry (email hidden) locking system, so no one will have to worry about key exchange and access issues.

Interaction with Guests

We are totally flexible and just want you to have a good time! The space allows you to be totally independent if that's your style (private entrace with keyless entry, minimal shared amenities, etc.), but we'd love to meet you and give some not-so-subtle recommendations for stuff to do and areas to see. IT'S UP TO YOU!

The Neighborhood

We feel lucky to live in a city like this and in a corner of it that strikes the right balance between funky neighborhood and proximity to the city center.

The Overlook is named for the nearby bluffs that look down onto the city center and the Willamette River, offering great sunsets and activity areas (lots of dogs, running and biking). There's a strong core of restaurants, bars, grocery stores and coffee.

Getting around

Public Transportation: Our home is located in North Portland, one block southeast from the MAX Yellow Line train (North Killingsworth Station) and the #72 Bus line.

Bicycle: North Williams/Vancouver Avenues is the main biking artery through this part of town. This couplet runs North/South and crosses both North Alberta and North Killingsworth streets that lead to our home. We are located approx. 1 mile West of this road.

Driving: Our home is only a few blocks from Interstate-5 - Alberta Street/Swan Island exit if you/re heading South, or the Killingsworth exit heading North.

  • The hosts were great. Good, proactive communication. Since the place is connected to theirs, they were respectful of our space.

The space is what you see. Good vibes and decoration. I think it's a fair price for what you get and it's an absolute bargain for (email hidden) to stay in Portland.

  • My girlfriend and I had a great time staying at Ben and Kristi's. I crossed paths with them when I first got there and they were very friendly and laid back. The space was really cute and clean and the private entrance was really convenient as our schedule in town was all over the place. I would definitely stay here again.

  • We spent just one night at Benjamin and Kristi's hip basement apartment. We arrived at 9 and left at 7, so it was short. We didn't get to meet Benjamin and Kristi, but the experience went very smoothly, with good communication and easy entry with their key pad. They did a great job of turning a small basement space into a really nicely designed spot. I really liked their taste. The shower head was terrific, there was good lighting, and it was quite clean.

  • Great place to stay. My wife and I stayed here during a really quick trip to Portland, but it was perfect for our needs. The apartment had a great feel and everything felt really well considered. Really nicely designed and thoughtfully put together. Ben and Kristi were very nice and helpful in all communications. We barely saw them, but it was nice to know they were there if we needed anything. We would definitely recommend staying here if you want a simple, stylish place to stay while in Portland. Walkable to a park and coffee shops in a cute quiet neighborhood. Ben and Kristi's place also gave us some great ideas for our basement.

  • Excellent spot - good restaurants and bars nearby, plenty to do within walking distance. The apartment itself is cozy and really nicely decorated. Would absolutely stay here again. Can't think of a single thing I would change with the place.

  • We had a great stay with the Whites. Although we did not get a chance to meet them in person, they were quick to give thoughtful responds to our questions sent via texts or emails and seem like very nice people.

The space was nice, it has a separate entrance from the house so it felt (email hidden)e bed was quite comfortable and it was nice to have the living room area for stretching out.

The neighborhood was nice and quiet, a quick drive to almost anywhere in Portland, and felt quite safe to us.

Ben reads lots of magazines, drinks coffee every day, sometimes rides an old moped, wears his hair messy before work then uses some sort of a clay to tame it and get professional, acts like his front porch is a stoop in New Orleans, went to yoga once and liked it, gets to work with teenagers in the margins, can sometimes defeat his wife in Tetris. Kristi laughs a lot, styles peoples' hairs, loves throwback onion dip, wishes she could wear overalls most days, used to be your flight attendant, has a dad who really lost his thumb in a bull-roping accident and won't let you sip from a beverage without an authentic-eye-contact "cheers". It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance!
