The Space

Located in a small mountain village in Tuscany between Bagni di Lucca and the pinocchio town of Collodi, lies Casa Cavalino. Casa Cavalino is a two bedroom, two bath townhome in a small ancient village with beautiful mountain views and old stone streets. There is a bar nearby where you can walk to have you morning cappuccino and 10 minutes away in the next village there is a restaurant, a pizzaria and a small grocery store. Bagni di Lucca is a further 10 minutes where you will find bars, restaurants and the local outdoor market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Casa Cavalino has a small garden where you can relax in the afternoon and read a good book or enjoy one of the many trails in the surrounding chestnut forest and try your luck for a chance sighting of some of the local wildlife. Further afield, Lucca is 40 minutes away, Florence and Pisa both about an hour. Casa Cavalino is the perfect vacation spot for relaxation, sight-seeing and enjoying the local Tuscan cuisine.

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Terri and Ray's annexe in Benabbio: well-equipped, spacious, friendly, and good value. The accommodation is nicely furnished and well decorated. Mosquito nets on the windows, too, which is not something you can take for granted. There is a lot of blessedly cool indoor space, and also an outdoor picnic table and pleasant small garden. Fab bookshelf snooping! Being in easy walking distance of the centre of the village itself is a huge plus: there is a really excellent and good value restaurant in the village serving local cuisine, for those days when you are tuckered out from touring, or just feeling like a (modest) splurge, or an easy excursion into the local culinary culture. And the walk back uphill is fine in the evening. And there is a local shop, too. Terri and Ray are great hosts - helpful when needed but leaving you as much space as you need, too. Terri's translation of the instructions (in Italian) for the evil automatic parking brake in our rental car saved our bacon. For which many thanks - as there is a lot to see in easy touring distance, and it's all very scenically steep, so you do want to make friends with your parking brake. The hosts' main house houses some very charismatic, laid-back, pets: two gorgeous Big Dogs and an equally gorgeous parrot. The road access to Benabbio itself involves a bit of medieval one-way single track dodgems, as does the access to the house, which is situated a bit uphill from the centre of the village. If it had been me driving I might have had a melt-down. But luckily for me I was just co-piloting ;-)

  • Teri and her husband were very welcoming to the cottage and answered any queries we had v quickly. The cottage is located in the hills with only one or two huts in the distance overlooking. The cottage itself is a picturesque, characterful building with plenty of space. The property and great pool get the sun through the day. All in I would recommend the property but I would do more research around things to do in the area beforehand if i went again as there is no wifi once you are there.

  • The booking process with Teri was easy and she answered any questions we had promptly.
The place is a self contained apartment next door to Teri and her husband Raymond, which was nice as meant if we had a questions they were there to help.
The apartment is spacious with 2 bedrooms and one bathroom upstairs. The kitchen – living room was downstairs, with utensils, crockery, pots which we were able to use. There was a tv and lots of guide books of the local area which was handy.

Teri kindly gave us a jar of jam she had made which is delicious and we are enjoying at home. They also kindly gave us some tomatoes from their garden that were delicious.

As the village is up a mountain there is no wifi.
There are some restaurants in the town which were good.
The apartment is in a good location to travel around Tuscany, visit Lucca etc.

Teri and Raymond were very cheerful, polite and helpful which made our stay really enjoyable.

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Teri and Ray! We were delighted with the spotless, cozy home and enjoyed cooking in the fully equipped kitchen. Even more we enjoyed sipping wine and chatting with Teri and Ray and playing with their Swiss Mountain dog, Luigi! We loved being in the mountains of Benabbio (super cool Italian village) and relaxing in our "exclusive cabin" so much that we extended our stay 2 more nights! We highly recommend this home!

  • Beautiful! Do not think twice about staying here. Teri and Ray are super nice and their place is beautifully decorated with so many special touches. It's far away from the crowds but close for day trips to many wonderful places. Our only regret was that we only stayed 4 days! Aloha!

  • We had so much fun, and loved the house, the village and the whole area. Teri and Raymond are the most fantastic hosts. The house was large and comfortable, the terrace was the place to be after a day exploring. We wanted to take Luigi (the Swiss mountain dog) and Knucklehead (the hilarious parrot) home with us. We will go again!
