When you want to relax, you can find all the necessary furniture (chaises longues, mattresses, garden tables, chairs, etc.) by the swimming pool or on the terraces of the bastide. La Bastide des Oliviers boasts an exceptional setting : the property is located in the Crau region, which is both protected and unique in France, made up of steppes with a huge range of flora and fauna. It’s the perfect place to go for a stroll.
Offering varying climates and different types of terrain, the regions surrounding the Crau are also awe-inspiring and varied. In the west you’ll find la Camargue, the amazing watery land where you can discover on horseback the charms of the marshes, forests and rice fields. To the north les Alpilles rise up, a range of little mountains where you’ll enjoy hiking amongst rivers, canals, olive groves and outcrops of white rock.
Lovers of urban tourism, however, will not be out of step. The region includes cultural, historical and architectural treasures. Just kilometres away lie some of the most beautiful villages in France like Baux de Provence or Saint Rémy de Servanne, or lose yourself in the old town of Arles, famous for its Roman and Romanesque buildings, in world heritage sites, such as les Arènes, or for its little Provençal streets. A dozen kilometres further away, discover Aix en Provence, capital of Provence, city of a thousand fountains, Avignon, its colour-filled festival and the majestic Popes’ palace, Marseille, the multi-cultural European capital of culture, or even Montpellier, with its exceptionally well-preserved city center.
From a practical perspective, just minutes away you can find all the little shops you need for everyday living (supermarket, bakery, etc.) The local gastronomy, strong in flavour and in colour, will make its way onto your plate in any one of the numerous charming regional restaurants. Last but not least, leisure activities aren’t lacking in the area either, just a couple of minutes is enough time to reach the cinema, the terrace of a bar, the theatre or the golf club.

We travel extensively and feel that this is a very accurate reflection of the experience in renting this home for a week. First and foremost, the folks who manage the property "SquareBreak" are exceptional. They provided things to do, places to visit and even helped with a dinner reservation on Bastille day which is no small feat. They met us at the home and provided us a tour of the property. They were excellent and I would rent from them again.
The property is not as luxurious as the description or the photos make it appear. The photos make the home seem full of light and sunshine which is not accurate. It is a very dark chateau and it is aged and not well kept. The beds are aged victorian beds and the rooms are all not located within the same building. There is the main chateau and then there is a another property (30 yards) away that has additional rooms, kitchen etc. Both are dark and both are simply, dated. Now, the entire Chateau is not yours either. There is a whole section (where the tower is located) that is blocked off and not accessible. The doors leading down the hallway to that section are simply locked so it felt a bit creepy to know that there was another family living there. There are several folks living on the property and the family has various homes on the property as well so it is not entirely private.
We rented the home for a small family of 5 and the folks at SquareBreak were generous to discount it the price to accommodate such a small family but not having access to the entire property was a bit surprising and disappointing. We received a text at one point from the owner indicating that he was unhappy that we were sleeping in one section but utilizing the living space of the other section which was uncomfortable to deal with.
At the end of the day, the Chateau has a lot of charm, the kids enjoyed it but it is just a Chateau in provence. The romantic ideas you may have from the description of exploring the property, walking through the lined up sycamore trees is simply not going not going to happen. The kitchen is no larger than a NY studio Kitchen. Let me add, they have two cleaners. The one for hire is Mala (they're both terrific) but if it wasn't for Mala we would have most likely left the property the first or second day upon arrival. She was terrific. She made our breakfast and lunch every day. The other lady did the cleaning. Overall, I would give this a 5.3 out of 10. Under no circumstances would this property be a 10/10 unless they put about a half million euros into updating the property and than making it very clear what section of the property you would have access too and kill the hay tractors in the morning.
