Casa Paraiso is a very special place overlooking the bay of Paraty, 5 min drive away from the old colonial town of Paraty. Its two terraces, BBQ and stunning views have been designed to offer ultimate relaxation in between the sea, the lush forest and the mountains !
If you are looking for a place walking distance from the old colonial town, it isn`t a place for you. Most of the beauty in Paraty lies in its impressive surrounding nature. This house is perfectly located for people looking for a quiet stay centrally located driving distance from the main beaches, waterfalls and other points of interests in Paraty.
Nestled in the hill side with stunning views overlooking the sea and the surrounding mountains this house will immerse you in peace, relaxation and a warm, friendly local community. Spend a relaxing evening sipping the local Brazilian drink Caipirinha on the decked terrace whilst enjoying your own home cooked churrasco (barbecue) with the famous local beef Picanha. Or spend your day lazing on the second top terrace soaking up the Brazilian sunshine reading your favourite book. This house has plenty of space with a living room and sofa bed, American style kitchen, a bathroom featuring a big window overlooking the sea, two good sized double bedrooms with double beds and a single bed, one with sea view, the other with garden view, decked area overlooking the sea with hammocks, table and chairs and barbecue area and a terrace area on the top with amazing views of the bay of Paraty. The Historic Town of Paraty is a 5 minute drive away where you will find a great range of restaurants, bars and shops.
Some of the many great things to do in the area:
==> Spend the day lazing on the beach and eating fresh seafood at Barra do Corumbe (beach down the hill from the house !)
==> Kayaking in the Jabaquara Mangroves (5 minutes drive from the house)
==> Chill on Praia Grande, Prainha and Ilha do Araujo, some of the most beautiful beaches in the area (few minutes drive from the house)
==> Visit Cachacaria Maria Izabel (little farm where the drink is produced) and spend the day relaxing at Rosa Beach (one of my favorites in all Paraty, few minutes drive from the house)
==> Explore the Graúna Region (its lush, waterfalls and rural villages (within 5 - 10 minutes drive from the house)
==> Biking or hiking to the Corisco village and its amazing waterfalls (10 minutes drive from the house)
==> Shop craft, enjoy a drink in the charming colonial town and why not take a boat trip from there ! (5-10 minutes drive from the house)
==> Going beyond the Paraty area and go explore Trindade (the Ocean side) with its amazing natural pools and surfing spots (45 minutes drive from the house, great for a day trip)
This is just a glance of all there is to offer in the area ! Every time I come back to Paraty, I discover new hidden spots and amazing places.
PLEASE BE AWARE that you will need a car for this property but the views and peace make it well worth it!
You can`t get such a spectacular view without being located up a hill so you`ll definitely need a car to hang around. If you are in good shape and can manage a 10 min hike you can also walk down and up the hill to the Corumbe beach, the locals from the village do it every day !
In any case, a car is an indispensable commodity in Paraty if you wish to see the best places, especially the hidden and quiet ones.
Beautiful place! Really tastefully decorated and in an amazing location. Our favorite thing about the house was the grill and outdoor seating area, which we used to make churrasco. Unfortunately, we got stuck with bad weather (it was our fault for going in the middle of winter). If we had been in a drab hotel, it would have been totally awful, but we made the most of it thanks to this awesome house.
I definitely recommend arranging where to meet Dennis (Julien's extremely gracious and helpful neighbor) in town so he can show you how to get to the house. Julien told us to do this, but we put it of till the last minute and then had trouble reaching him because none of us had a working phone. (Again, totally our fault.)
We arrived in Julien's house in Paraty the day after our team was knocked out of the world cup. The place proved an excellent tonic to our blues. The views are spectacular, the house is charming and the locals were very friendly. Special thanks to Julien's friend/neighbour - Dennis. He was very helpful showing us the house and area and arranging taxis for us to go into Paraty. Paraty is great and a "must visit" for anybody coming to Brazil.
I'll start with the positive aspects of the place: the views are as amazing as they look on the website - absolutely spectacular. And Julien and his friend Denis, who lives next door, are incredibly responsive and really nice and gracious hosts. (Denis met us on the freeway and drove us all the way up to the house.)
But unfortunately, the place itself wasn't what we were looking for, and we ended up leaving after the first night. It's up a really steep hill a few miles outside of Paraty - the house itself is actually at the end of a dirt road that Denis said can't be traversed when it's been raining (which is frequently). We also didn't feel comfortable driving up and down the hill at night, which really limited our options after the sun went down, which was around 6 the night we got there. Also, the community that the house is located in is a bit rough-and-tumble - it didn't feel dangerous, but as foreigners we definitely got a few stares, and there were no restaurants. (There was one outdoor bar that had a pool table, but no food.) And the bakery that some people mention isn't a full-fledged padaria, per se - it's more like a corner store that has bread. As for the beach, it's definitely not within easy access, unless you're planning to traverse the steep hill/dirt road every time you drive there.
Basically, if you're looking for a place that's out of the way and a bit isolated, with spectacular views, this is the place for you. If you're looking for a place with good access to the beach, restaurants, and bars in the Paraty area, I would recommend looking elsewhere. We ended up going to Jabaquara and having a great time the rest of the weekend.
Thank you very much for your feedback. So far we never received that kind of feedback considering that the description mentions you need a car (with minutes of drive for every great place nearby) and that it is a quiet place, still only 10 min drive from the colonial town. I still appreciate your feedback and will make sure to state it even more clearly in the description. Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay in the end.
There are two ways to enjoy Paraty: stay at a beach such as Jabaquara (touristic and quite artificial place) and don`t move anywhere else. On the other hand you can have a quiet base and go explore and visit the incredible number of beaches, waterfalls, mountains and other points of interests in the area. I think you were definitely looking for the first one while the house is clearly located to fulfill people wishing to explore and willing to use a car (an indispensable commodity in Paraty to discover all it has to offer).
All the best
The Paraty bay area is one of Brazil's most beautiful, and this house is ideally situated to explore it. The house is well designed to make the most of stunning views over the bay and surrounding countryside, with great use of inside and outside space: large French doors and shutters open up onto the terrace and bring the lush tropical forest into the living space. Even the shower has a large picture window! The rest of the house is comfortable and well-equipped.
The location is on the edge of a small village 10 minutes' drive from the colonial town of Paraty. There's a small general store a short walk away, for bread and other essentials, which is extremely handy. There's even a beach at the bottom of the hill, if you can't be bothered to drive further afield.
But you really should, because a short drive away are some of the region's most stunning beaches: in particular, those around Trindade, like Praia do Sono, reached only by boat or a lovely 1 hour forest walk, or our personal favourite, Praia Brava, only 25 minutes walk from the road but almost deserted during the week.
If you're tired of the beach, there are plenty of other things to do, either in Paraty (with a huge choice of restaurants and shops) or the surrounding countryside (waterfalls and forest walks, kayaking, visits to the local rum distillery).
We had a great stay. The house is nicely furbished and decorated and the view is great. What a pleasure to enjoy the sea and mountains view from the breakfast until the sunset !
The house offers all what is necessary to have a confortable and relaxing stay, including airconditionned which is vital with almost 40 degrees outside (in february).
People of the area are very friendly (+ no problem of unsafety). And the area is very nice, Parati is great though very touristic, we could change of beach almost every day and the must is to go by boat discovering the beaches of the innumerable islands of the area (we recommend leaving from Praia grande with Leonardo !).
Hopefully we will go back !
Sentiremos saudades desse lugar. Voltaremos em breve!
Loved this place - the view was phenomenal and everything worked well (shower, grill, kitchen, AC etc). It is about 8 minutes by car outside Paraty which is nice and relaxing but you can still go hit the town a bit. You definitely need a car to stay here and I would suggest one with some umpf since the drive up the hill can offer challenges to certain manual rental cars. I sadly did not meet Julien but his friend met us at the late hour of our arrival to escort us up to the house. Fantastic experience. Definitely recommend. Bring bug spray!
NB: there was a very friendly dog hanging out when we were there. No problems but if you are allergic it's something to consider.
