Welcome to HawksNest Sanctuary!

The Space

The perfect retreat for one or two awaits you. Just follow the steps toward the ocean to your patio. Step through your private entrance into the dining room, sit at the table or the breakfast bar and enjoy a meal prepared in your fully equipped kitchen with everything you could possibly need. Relax in your living room listening to music from the CD library on the Bose sound system, compose or play music on the piano, or watch a DVD from our extensive library on the flat screen TV. If you want a quieter activity, you can read one of many books provided from the stocked bookcase or simply watch the hawks soar or whales swim by. For exercise, there is an easy walk as well as a moderate hike up the private gated canyon, or you may stroll down to a private beach. The full bath welcomes you for a hot shower or bubble bath.
The lovely bedroom awaits you with a sweet-dream-inducing Queen-sized pillow-top mattress. Not quite ready to sleep? So, you grab a towel, slip on the plush robe provided, go just out of the bedroom sliding glass doors and climb into the hot tub. There you watch the moon rise, perhaps a shooting star or two... all the while listening to waves crashing, sea lions, crickets, owls and the creek in the canyon below in preparation for the best sleep you've ever had.

Interaction with Guests

As your hosts, we want you to have a wonderful stay while visiting this retreat setting.

Although we live above the rental space, we cherish the tranquility of the property and our privacy as much as we respect those same needs for our guest's ultimate benefit. That said, we are happy to assist you with requests and we are here to help in any way we can. Otherwise, we will not be seen or heard unless you want to see or speak with us.

The Neighborhood

The house is located in a very quiet, residential area at the end of a private road. The house itself is perched on the edge of a canyon and borders wilderness area. Most of the homeowners are retired and many are only here part-time. There are many wild critters in the area including deer, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, coyote, skunk, wild boar as well as (a few venomous and) many harmless reptiles. We have abundant bird life in the area and are fortunate enough to have a bird's eye view of a Redtail Hawk's nest used every year by a mated pair of hawks. We cherish and respect all of the inhabitants of the area... human, and especially furred, feathered and scaled. Please tread lightly on their land.

Getting around

There is no public transportation in our neighborhood. Free, safe parking is available on the street next to the driveway. There is taxi service (expensive) and an Airport Shuttle service available. We will provide you with their website for costs and schedules.

Other Things to Note

Cell phone reception at the house and in the neighborhood is unreliable and often unavailable. You are provided with a phone that accepts incoming calls and allows you to make local calls.

There are steps with a railing going to the retreat space. If you have knee/hip or foot problems our space may not be the right fit for you. Contact us with your concerns.
Our hot tub filtration system is chemical-free and keeps the water clean and crystal clear with no odor and is kind to your skin. The system is more sensitive than those that use the nasty chemicals. So please be thoughtful and don't wear lotions or oils in the tub.

We are animal lovers and have four cats and two small, well behaved dogs. You are welcome to enjoy them outdoors or ignore them. If you are also an animal lover, we ask that you help us continue to keep your space free from pet fur and dander by keeping our pets outside and making sure to keep screens and doors closed... We would not want to have your vacation dampened by their potentially unwanted behavior towards your belongings. If you do interact with our pets, we also request that you do not give them food as they are all on special diets.

There will be days (especially in Summer) when the ocean and even the canyon are obscured by fog. Sometimes we are in sunshine while most of the peninsula is in fog. There is no knowing and no guarantee when it comes to weather or visibility... all part of the adventure and the mystery.

  • Teri and I had a excellent experience in our dealings with Kevin. The check smoothly and on time as we were met at the door and shown around. The accommodations were just as advertised and more spacious than we had originally thought.

The views from every window (and the hot tub) offered the ocean and the canyon. The quiet and privacy made us feel like we had the place all to ourselves!

I'd highly recommend this location to anyone looking for that special place to stay when in Carmel.

  • Beautiful and Kevin and were very accomodating. 1st class experience.

  • Very nice place with an amazing view of the valley and the sea. The tenants left us with a very good impression, and gave excellent service. This place has everything you might need for a relaxing time. Highly recommended.

  • We had a great relaxing weekend at Kevin and Jill's place. The home was very clean, nicely decorated, and everything was ready to make us feel like we were in a home away from home -- from a nice gift basket on arrival to the soft bathrobes near the hot tub. We also enjoyed using the grill on the patio with its terrific view of the ocean.

Location was great - just a short drive up Highway 1 to Carmel and Monterrey, and the neighborhood was quiet and peaceful as advertised.

  • The property and surroundings are beautiful here.

Unfortunately, the hosts are a bit neurotic and overbearing. They're nice people with good intentions, who are perhaps not cut out to think of their home as a rental property intended to accommodate guests.

If you don't mind the feeling that you're being observed (and the occasional passive-aggressive joke about being quizzed on the house manual), it's a very pretty place to spend a weekend.

A few excerpts from communications with the hosts to support my conclusion, in case you're curious:

"testing for the manual reading will be held at 10 pm tonite...we could do it while y’all are in the hot tub! you know i am joking."

    ...and, my favorite...

"hey! ok. you must know that the power outage late at night was beyond our control and hope it did not mess up your evening. being as you had a fire that night, it should have been no problem, unless, of course, you were trying to work! [don't think so!] i just gotta say that taking so much stuff out of the guest toiletries to take home with you was a bit tacky...we are not a hotel. we are two people who want to share what we have with others...that was a bit obsessive, don’t you think?
the food in the bed and on the floor of the living room, and even on the cabinets was also tacky. i accepted you because of the numerous reviews of how well you took care of the space...perhaps they are not as specific as we are?
we accepted you and worked with you on all your requests in the hopes that you would honor our agreements. we saw you smoking out in the rock garden even though in the house rules and in the house manual it states very clearly that there is to be no smoking anywhere on the property or on the road where you park.
is it just a plain “[[explicative removed]]” to us? we are disappointed, igor...i worked with you because i believed in you. you have taught me a very important lesson for the future...thank you. i truly hope your gift to lucy was appreciated by her. i thought it was a lovely birthday gift...that is why i worked so hard to make it happen for you. too bad it was under false pretenses, as far as we are concerned. funny...kevin told me not to rent to you and i told her she was wrong in what she felt from your initial inquiry. thank you for making me wrong and kevin right. it has taught me an invaluable lesson."

We didn't eat anything in bed. Who eats dinner in the bedroom? There were only 2 of us. In reality, we were pretty tidy. We also paid $100 cleaning fee. Our only "special request" was a 2-night stay.

To their credit, the hosts did email again the morning after to apologize for sending this & acting like crazy people.

    Response from Kevin:

Igor, you seem to be alone in your judgement of our personalities. It is a comfort to us that our other guests’ reviews reflect the opposite to be the truth.

(Igor left this review after he received a less than positive review from us because he did not honor the house rules and was disrespectful of our home.)

  • Hospitality, hospitality, hospitality. That’s what first comes to mind about our weekend stay at Hawk’s Sanctuary and of Kevin and Jill. From their providing an item or two we requested, to the unexpected welcome basket, to their kind and responsive communications. And the complete privacy, gorgeous sunsets, comfort of the accommodations, stars over the hot tub, seclusion (saw NO ONE on two trips of 8 miles of hiking) and beauty of the canyon next door and just plain peacefulness of the whole experience. We are without a doubt going back again this year.

  • Lila and I came to the HawksNest Sanctuary for a much needed Valentines weekend retreat. Kevin and Jill blew us away with the romantic atmosphere they created--they went beyond all expectations in preparing the space for our stay. We had a restful weekend of healing and especially enjoyed the hot tub under the full moon, overlooking the ocean. Hearing the ocean at night and reading by the fireplace was soothing. We loved watching the birds and going on a walk through a pristine canyon and redwood forest, adjacent to the property. It was magical. We will be back soon!

  • Wow. This place is truly amazing. The setting is spectacular: stunning views and canyon and ocean that never look the same for even an instant. Creatures everywhere. Tranquility. There are hiking trails literally out the front door. The proximity to Carmel and Big Sur couldn't be better.

Best part is the care and the attention to detail that the hosts provide. You can see that they take immense pride in their guests' experiences.

I wish I could give them six stars. We shall return!

    p.s. Great cliffside hot tub!

  • Kevin was helpful from the first time we spoke, giving me traffic tips and finding little odds and ends that would help make my stay even more comfortable. All in all, these were some of the sweetest hosts I can remember staying with.

Hawk's Nest is an absolutely gorgeous environment for unwinding. The pictures explain perfectly what it's like from their back porch, sipping tea and watching the waves. I would love to stay there again, in part because I already miss their dog Harley!

Caretaking, Writing, Creating Art & Photography
I was one of three girls with the name of Kevin in my high school graduating class. I feel blessed to live with my partner of ten years on this sacred piece of land at the edge of wilderness overlooking a canyon and the ocean. Together we write and create various expressions of art while care taking the property, our menagerie of pets and other creatures that also call our property home. We love sharing our blessings with like-minded people who appreciate and can benefit from "fillin' up" their souls with the many gifts this property offers.
