Our cozy house offers lots of space. We're centrally located, near downtown, the airport, and bus access. The house has many comfortable places to read, work, or talk.
An art-filled home on a treeful hilltop.
We are artists, cooks, and bone collectors. Our home is pleasant and full of things to explore, including lots of board games, comics, and books. Our space best accommodates 1-2 people.
Guests have wifi access, a private room, and are welcome to use the house as their own -- read books in the library. Work at the kitchen table. Play music in the living room.
This house is half home, half studio. You are wise to expect to see projects in progress, paintings drying in the library, and possibly be present during a photo shoot or a band practice. We give all guests a heads-up as to upcoming ongoings they should be aware of.
Cat meets most of the guests. Scott is more elusive. One of us is available most evenings, though aside from meals we are mostly tucked away.
We are close to downtown DSM.
Buses stop at the bottom of our hill, a block away. They will take you downtown, and from downtown anywhere else you need to go. Taxis also available.
We have awesome cats.
Guests are welcome to use the main floor of the house as their own. Enjoy the stereo, cook up a storm in the kitchen, take a long and relaxing bath. The deck outside is private and enjoyable as well.
We mostly keep the basement as a private space.
Cat is House Captain and is available for any needs or questions you encounter. We mostly stick to ourselves, working in our respective studios, but we have an open door
We often invite guests to game and movie nights, and our friends have met many AirBNB guests.
Our neighborhood is quiet, and provides a nice walk. Climb the hill for beautiful views of the city. Head a couple blocks west for a hike in Macrae Park. Go north and you'll hit the Des Moines city trail system and Riverwalk leading downtown.
Busses run a block from our house.
Parking is available for guests in our driveway.
The airport is a <$10 taxi ride away. If driving, take a left out of the air port and drive a mile or so to Park Avenue. Take a right, and drive another mile or two. At the bottom of a hill there is a four way stop sign at South Union. Turn left. Drive one mile, almost to the end of the street: we are the last house on the right side of South Union Street.
Our house is busy but never chaotic. We try to practice overcommunication. Cat keeps late studio hours, so expect light activity at night (though if you need a good night's sleep, let her know and she'll be happy to accommodate completely). Under normal circumstances you should expect to hear her pad around the house, talking to cats, moving paintings, using a microwave. Noisier activities (vacuuming, cleaning) are reserved for daytime hours.
Scott and Cat are excellent hosts who made my three-week stay in Des Moines a breeze. They were so welcoming, it felt like being at home. They went beyond the call of duty by helping me with a few things that would have otherwise been impossible, such as finding new homes for some of my aging mother's things and letting me do a bit of her extra laundry at their house.
The house is well located in a nice neighborhood between theairport and the middle of downtown. The room is clean and the breakfast and snacks are ample and tasty, sometimes even exotic. The WiFi is fast and stable. (I'm a computer person and rely on that.) I like to try and keep in shape while away from home, and they have a nice space for that and some spare light weights I could borrow.
It was a blast to check out thecool and beautiful art they create,
both visual and aural.
Scott and Cat are imaginative, kind, people and come to think of it,
so are their three cats.
I can't think of a nicer place to stay.
Scott and Kat are very good hosts with a clean and comfortable room. They're three cats are friendly, and my wife and I enjoyed the one night stay we had. Good luck with the band, Kat.
Scott and Cat are wonderful, creative people. Their guest bedroom furnished the best sleep I had had in weeks; charmingly decorated and very cozy to boot. I couldn't recommend them highly enough...!
Very nice stay, Quiet and clean house. Very friendly hosts.
Kat is a delightful host, and her cats are adorable. Thank you very much.
We had a great time staying with Cat and Scott. They were both very welcoming. They had a lot of helpful information to share with us about Des Moines. The room was very comfortable. We had fun getting to know this great couple and their three lovely cats.
Had a great cozy stay in Des Monies with Scott and Cat. I was visiting town during 2 major events, and the only hotels left in the area had universally terrible reviews... So I came over to air bnb for the rescue. The room was super cute, the cats were cuddly and the location was perfect for jaunting downtown or heading over to Drake University. They really saved my trip!
Cat was an incredible host - warm, generous, and made sure my stay in Des Moines was unforgettable. She is very involved in the creative scene in the city and hosts wonderful community events, which gave me an unique and marvelous view into the heart of the Des Moines. I would enthusiastically recommend this house to anyone who wants to discover what makes Iowa great!
The location relevant to downtown was great - getting into the city was very easy. Scott and Cat were always very kind, answering any questions I had. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a comfortable, relaxing place to stay!
Scott was out of town during my stay but his wife was a great host. She helped me figured out bus schedules and even spotted me some change when I was short. They have 3 very friendly cats and I felt very comfortable in their home. I would certainly recommend it.
