The Space

Please note: I get a LOT of inquiries! In the spirit of sustainability, please don't send me a question unless you've read my whole listing. If there's something I haven't mentioned, then please do inquire!!

Here are some important requirements upfront:

1) You have a car! Our house is not accessible by public transport and you cannot count on me for rides to/from the Caltrain.

2) You realize that we are 22 miles south of SF and 11 miles north of Stanford. I get many requests and questions from potential guests who want city or other locations etc.

3) You and your group are a good mix of social and self-sufficient. While we love to share a glass of wine or dinner, we have really busy lives and you will need to be able to make yourself at home, take care of yourself here and even pick up a broom or load the dishwasher. (Preferably without asking me what you can or should do!)

We are a community-minded progressive family living in a beautiful spot which we love to share.

Location: Our home is located in the hills of Belmont 30 minutes from San Francisco, 25 minutes from SFO, Stanford and the ocean at Half Moon Bay and about 20 minutes from the South San Francisco conference center. Our location is gorgeous. We have spectacular views of San Francisco and Oakland and our backyard leads straight onto wonderful and extensive hiking trails.

Our house is not the easiest to get to (but I'll give you great directions) but once you're here you'll think you were at a resort in a beautiful nature area. It's a hidden treasure of a place; the deer found it first and apparently aren't going anywhere. They let us stay too.

Our Perfect Guest:
Come stay with us if you're a progressive-minded person coming to the area for a conference (or un-conference). You're especially welcome if you're moving here to get involved in the valley tech scene, to visit Stanford; if you're in start-up mode or an entrepreneur, scientist, artist or progressive educator. In fact, you're welcome if you have an adventurous and generous spirit and have something thought-provoking to say or a passion to share.

Our perfect guest is someone who is willing to be part of the scene. If we're around you are likely to be invited to join us for dinner or whatever we're doing--and we hope that you'll be willing to cut veggies or load the dishwasher etc. -- If we're really busy or out, it will mean making yourself at home, being self-sufficient and cleaning up after yourself. We hope that you will behave like you live here in terms of contribution and attitude.

You have your choice of:

A) a comfortable double bed made up in the nicest room in the house; the living room. We have three of them so could sleep 6 very friendly people in the living room. My preferred maximum is 4 people but hey, make me a proposal. What you lose in privacy you gain in beauty.

B) An airbed or foam mattress on the floor of the bonus room surrounded by our kid's books and games. More private but much less beautiful. And the lowest ceiling in the house.

You can use the hallway half-bathroom but because all the showers and bathtubs are in the ensuite bathrooms we will have to work together to find a time for you to bathe. You also have the use of the open-concept kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, and outdoor patio and BBQ area.

Our kids don't go to school (we are Independent Learners) and we have a very wide variety of interests and pastimes. We are often very busy, sometimes at the house with other learners and friends, sometimes out exploring the Bay Area. Collectively we enjoy entrepreneurialism; Dungeons and Dragons; cooking; Hi-tech and Bio-tech; photography; orchids; Quantified-Self, Self-Science and Self-tracking; edu-hacking and bio-hacking; wine; progressive education; Magic The Gathering; salons; community; conversation; Lindy Hop dance; hat-making; etc etc etc...

Cleaning fee: The cleaning fee is to cover laundry of sheets and towels. If you will be bringing your own bedding please let me know and I will send back a special offer reduced by the cleaning fee amount.

How to book with us:

When you make a booking request, please make sure to include:

a) your full name
b) something about you and the other people in your party, so that I can (website hidden) you
c) what you expect to be doing during your visit
d) your preferred sleeping arrangement (playroom or living room etc) and bedding needs so I can be ready to welcome you when you arrive.

We look forward to meeting and hosting you!

  • I stayed in Lisa's ground floor bedroom for 5 nights. I had no particular issues and she is very nice and sociable. The room was quite big and everything was very convenient.

  • Very nice family, beautiful house in a very peaceful neighbors. Has been great to spend a night with with the family sharing experiences and vision living "out of the box", tasting a delicious earthy dinner. We hope to guest them in Italy one day ;)

  • It's a great place to stay. Lisa & Joe are very friendly and open hosts and apart of fruitful discussion you feel really welcomed at their place. The house is surrounded by green hills and you have a beautiful view down to San Francisco. Thanks for everything!

  • Lisa and family were kind hosts and have a lovely place to place stay in the hills. The directions Lisa provided were helpful as my GPS was a bit mixed up. I only wish circumstances were different so I could have stayed longer.

  • What a wonderful, vibrant, lively space with an amazing view to boot. Lisa is the ultimate host: friendly, warm and engaged. Unfortunately Joe was out of town during my stay and so I didn't have the opportunity to meet and discuss the minutiae of patents :-) Next time though, because I'll surely stay with Lisa and family on my next trip to Silicon Valley.

  • Lisa and family were great hosts - it really was just like slotting into a busy family life. They were friendly and considerate and the communication was excellent. No surprises, it was exactly as we expected and we'd very happily stay again. Really enjoyed the chats and feedback on their experiences in the Valley, particularly around startups.

  • Staying at Lisa's home was a wonderful experience. Prior to our arrival Lisa responded to all my questions thoroughly. Knowing what to expect was very helpful and there was nothing to worry about our accommodation travelling from Europe with a toddler. I am especially grateful to Lisa and Joe as they didn't  even bat an eyelid to my jetlagged son's night wakings! We left after 3 days feeling inspired and welcomed by this wonderful family. Even in our dazed and confused jet-lagged  state we enjoyed every bit of interacting with the whole family. I feel very lucky that I found Lisa in my first Airbnb attempt!Thank you!!

  • What a wonderful introduction for me into Silicon Valley staying at Lisa and Joe's home! They indeed do have a "fun family" and were wonderful hosts. Besides the beautiful home and warm hospitality, I really benefited hearing their stories and learning from them as long-time insider's in the technology world.

I will be coming back to Silicon Valley and look forward to staying with them again!
