Magic Sands Beach features beautiful white sand, crystalline, turquoise snorkeling water and boogie Boarding. World class surfing is within one mile walking distance. The house is located in White Sands Subdivision, which is a charming, friendly and laid back Hawaiian style beach neighborhood.

The space

Private, separate two-bedroom ground floor apartment in Hawaiian style home steps from ocean and just 1/4-mile from lovely Magic Sands Beach. In addition to 2 bedrooms the apartment has a living room/dining room, 1 bathroom, and kitchenette with refrigerator, small stove, microwave, and toaster oven. The master bedroom has 1 hand-crafted teak king-size bed. The second bedroom has two twin-size beds. You will sleep to the sound of the ocean waves and wake up to the singing of tropical birds, but please note, there can be street traffic noise in the morning and late afternoon from commuter traffic on Laaloa Avenue. The rental includes a private, fenced Bali style garden and patio featuring many tropical plants and flowers and Southeast Asian art. The garden showcases a traditional thatched gazebo from the island of Timor, Indonesia as well as a Cham Cambodian Buddha sculpture/fountain from northern Thailand. Keauhou shopping center with KTA grocery store, various restaurants, and a movie theater is less than 2 miles south of the vacation rental. Kailua Village, the main tourist center and town, is 4 miles north. No smoking and no pets allowed. No air conditioning only ceiling fans and floor fan

Guest access

Guests have private access to their apartment as well as their own gated garden. There is a coin-operated laundry room with washer and dryer for common use.

Interaction with guests

I live upstairs. The vacation rental apartment is downstairs. I am always available should guests need something or have specific questions. Guests may leave me a message on my landline, email me, or text me on my cellphone. If I am home, guests may come up and talk or visit with me.

Other things to note

In recent years Laaloa Avenue was connected to Kuakini Highway. It now connects Alii Drive to Kuakini Highway and is a tsunami evacuation route.
The connection has brought more traffic noise to the neighborhood. The vacation rental gets more traffic noise in the morning and late afternoon from commuter traffic. The vacation rental entrance faces Laaloa Avenue, and has a driveway and private parking space on Laaloa Avenue.

Just returned from staying here, and it was great! Great location near coast, great layout for the rooms, and a great host. As other have noted, it is near a road that can sometimes be busy. But we loved being within a block to the coast and the spacious size of the unit.

Nice size and close enough to beaches and restaurants (those were a short drive). Very noisy on weekends and no AC. Mary was easy to contact and flexible with scheduling.

Sorry about the Wifi. Hawaiian Tel service on the outer islands is not good and the internet service is erratic. I have been scheduled to change my internet service to Oceanic Time Warner Cable on April 27. It is stated in the description of the vacation rental that the apartment is fan cooled and that there is no air con.

Mary's place is a lovely beautifully decorated place that was in a great location for us as we snorkeled at Ka'alu'u beach every morning and enjoyed the easy drive from Downtown. Mary was very sweet and accommodating. The king bed in the main bedroom was SUPER comfortable and it was hard to leave. Thanks Mary

We stayed for two weeks at Mary’s place in Kona in February. It's an attractive and nicely furnished apartment in the residential area of Kailua, a popular resort town. The kitchen and bath are clean and well-equipped, the living/dining room is spacious enough, and the main bedroom is large and comfortable. The apartment is a little dark, but we were outside most days so it wasn't a real problem. The enclosed backyard with its privacy, lush greenery, and decorations from the Far East is the star of the show. It's beautiful and serene, and we enjoyed hanging out there in the mornings and early evenings after our travels. We could get a glimpse of the ocean from Mary’s place, and as advertised, it’s just a couple blocks to the Magic Sands Beach. High surf must have washed much of the beach sand away and it wasn’t the best for general swimming, but other times of the year it may be better. Still it was beautiful and an easy walk so we visited the beach often for the sunsets and relaxation. There were a couple of small negatives. There is a parking space off the street, but it has a pretty steep slope making it a challenge to park, especially if you have a large vehicle (thankfully we had a compact). Anyone elderly or with mobility problems would find it difficult to enter or exit the car because of that. However, Mary is very accommodating and might have other parking options if this situation was a problem for someone. Also, because Mary’s place was just a short distance from the main street, Ali’i Drive, there was occasional traffic noise, but most of the time it was very peaceful in the apartment and in the yard. All in all, we feel that Mary is an very good host and offers a fair deal with her apartment. We give it 4 1/2 stars and a very good rating!

For twenty years I lived on a coffee farm in rural Honaunau on the lush slopes of Mauna Loa and produced delicious, world class Kona coffee. I have worked as an educator both in the USA and abroad and love to travel and meet new people from different cultures. I am co-owner of an import business in Kailua-Kona which features furniture, handicrafts, and decorator items from my travels to China, India, Bali, Thailand, and other parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. For the past five years I have lived near the ocean by Magic Sands Beach. I have loved the ocean and water sports since I was a small child.
