Sonu has a wonderful haven in Kolkata. A lovely, spotlessly clean, spacious guest house with the feel of a private home. Indeed, each level is set up like a three-bedroom apartment with a shared living room, dining area and kitchen. Each bedroom has its own en-suite, so you can choose to be away from others or to mingle with other guests and meet people from exotic places. If you are a family, you could take two or three bedrooms on one level and have your own apartment! Each room is well equipped with hanging space, wifi, hair dryer, safe, toiletries, complimentary snack on arrival, TV, private balcony. There's even a sparkling swimming pool! The area is secure and relatively quiet so you can be sure of a comfortable night's sleep. I've stayed here twice now and it's certainly a place I'll return to.
Sonu makes a point of greeting her guests personally and getting to know them. She has a terrific knowledge of Kolkata and can make suggestions on everything from where to shop, what to visit, and how to get to places. She has tamed the local cab drivers, so you can be confident you'll be treated fairly by them. Sonu is vivacious, charming, fun, and has loads of energy. She'll welcome you like a long lost relative, or leave you to yourself if you'd prefer. Ravi, Sonu's husband, is equally welcoming and lovely.
Tatvam doesn't have a restaurant, but it does have terrific cooks who prepare delicious food in the terrace kitchen and deliver it to your room or to the dining table on your level. This is the best of all worlds. You get great, clean food, and a quiet space to enjoy it with no pesky waiters hanging around! Additional food is just a quick call away. The food is freshly prepared, so allow 20 mins for it to arrive. If you fancy something not on the menu, then just ask - you'll be surprised what can appear! If you enjoy Bengali food, ask for the Bengali Special Thali - it's worth going back just for this!
The last words have to go to the staff. From the time you enter Tatvam you are greeted by warm smiles and friendly people who only want to help. There is none of the obsequiousness that you often find in large hotels, just genuine warmth. 'Sam' runs the office and helpers with calm assurance and everyone has a 'can-do' attitude. The level of care shown to guests is exemplary.
As a woman travelling on my own, security is always top of my list and Tatvam provides this. Sonu and Ravi went out of their way to make sure I was safe, even when not in the premises. Thanks, Sonu, Ravi, Sam and all the Tatvam staff for looking after me while I was with you. I have very, very fond memories - and I'll be back!
Sonu and Ravi are two of Kolkata's special people. Warm, welcoming, delightful to be around, caring, interested, happy to advise, but happy to leave you to your own devices if that's what you prefer. My stay was just one day and night connecting travel in regional WB and a trip to AP. I left a bag because my baggage allowance to Hyderabad was only 15 kgs(!). I felt perfectly secure doing that. I've returned to the welcome of a long lost family member and various adventures in Kolkata that I'll talk about in my next post when I reluctantly leave this lovely guest house for the next stage of my journey to India. I would recommend this place to anyone in a heartbeat. I thought the location was a bit far from the South Kolkata places I came to visit, but the cab ride is short (20mins) and cheap (INR140), so it wasn't an issue. Tatvam Residency is a Kolkata haven and I'll plan to return here on my next journey to India.
