Private sauna and outdoor shower

A private Finnish sauna and open-air cedar shower tucked among grapevines and fig trees

A stay guests keep coming back to

Guests describe a spa-like retreat that's hard to leave, with many returning for repeat stays
The guesthouse is a private oasis in the city. It's surrounded by fruit trees and tall Chinese Mountain bamboo. It's a quick walk to Woodlawn Park, great coffee, a bakery, pizza, whiskey bar, a brewery, seasonal farmers market, and minutes from Alberta Arts District.

The airy, open floor plan is filled with natural light, mixed textiles and warm woods. A cedar-surround outdoor shower and private 5x7 Finnish sauna lend to the spa-like setting. Guests say it’s hard to leave!

The space
This guesthouse is thoughtfully designed with eclectic housewares art and tapestries curated and collected in our travels. The large plants, reclaimed wood throughout, and plentiful windows bring warmth to the space. The big comfy couch, hanging chair, Eames-style lounger, and private nooks to relax and drink coffee or read a book instantly ease you into downtime.

This guesthouse was built by a local finish carpenter who has crafted several well-known Portland businesses. He even repurposed wood boards from the original on-site carriage house in our ceiling.

The detached 700 sq. ft. 2-story guesthouse is tucked behind the main house and has its own secluded backyard space. A quiet sitting area under the tall bamboo, fig tree, and grape vine trellis keeps you shady. When in season, we encourage you to pick any ripe fruit to enjoy.

In the loft is a queen-size Englander Hotel collection mattress and hypoallergenic comforter with soft flax linen sheets. High-and cotton waffle-weave towels, Turkish quick-dry sauna towels, and bath robes add to the spa-like experience.

Speaking of the experience, the unexpected delight is the private outdoor shower and Finnish sauna. You’ll be surprised by the simple joy of showering in the open air, either under the stars and string lights or the morning sun, shaded by the grape vines overhead.

The kitchen has a mini fridge stocked with beverages for relaxing travelers. There are all the simple home necessities you'll need for a short stay, high-end coffee brewing equipment thoughtfully recommended by our favorite local coffee roaster, and a gas range with an oven for cooking meals. Although we hope you take advantage of the many great restaurants close by.

We’re within walking distance to a tiny seasonal Farmers Market, Woodlawn Coffee & Bakery, Firehouse Restaurant, LaVerne's, P's & Q's Market, Tamale Boy, Tough Luck Bar, and more when the weather allows you to take a longer neighborhood stroll to Killingsworth or Alberta St.

Guest access
If you need an early check-in or late check-out, please try to let us know more than 24 hours in advance and we will confirm availability. If requesting more than 1 hour, we charge a nominal convenience fee of $20/hr due to scheduling changes for our cleaners.

Your entrance is through a gate shared with the main house that accesses the back property. You will access the house with a keypad with your unique auto-generated code, free to come and go as you wish. The back patio with the sauna, shower, and sitting area is not enclosed but configured in a way that feels private from the rest of the yard.

Other things to note
As mentioned there is only an outdoor shower in this guesthouse. However, it is right off of the bathroom and is private. The combination with the outdoor sauna, cedar slat walls, and foliage make it feel like a spa setting but nevertheless, if this isn't your thing, please make other arrangements. Feel unsure? Take it from other guests who have said it was the most relaxing part of their guest experience.

Please only use organic bathing products since our property has edible fruit trees. We provide shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

Thoughtful details throughout for our guests' ultimate comfort like luxury Quince brand 100% flax linen bedding, quick-dry Turkish towels, agave fiber kitchen sponges, and freshly ground local coffee & our favorite local tea on-hand.

Neighborhood highlights

Woodlawn's angled streets remind residents of a time when the streetcar depot was a major feature of the neighborhood. Our property is situated on a block of primarily 1920s bungalows, less than 2 blocks from an award-winning brewery, bakery, coffee shop, bars, and restaurants situated around a large city park. In the Summer, Woodlawn Park is known for movies on the lawn and Dekum Triangle hosts a small farmer's market. Less than 1 mile from our neighborhood are a couple of other shopping/dining destinations including on Killingsworth St/NE 30th Ave and the Alberta Arts District. Mississippi Avenue is just 2 miles West of us with more shopping and eating to explore.

Even though this is a pretty quiet neighborhood overall, be advised that we are in the city so you'll hear the occasional siren, neighbors' cars and music, neighborhood animals etc. We have blackout shades and provide earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
