Our home is four blocks north of the Historic downtown mall, with easy access to restaurants, outdoor cafe's, boutiques, music venues and more. A perfect getaway for family and friends visiting UVA students or the Charlottesville area. Sleeps 2-6.

The Space

Our home is approximately 1700 sq feet. It is brick and has a metal roof. Enter into a large foyer. To the left is a large living area (used to be 2 rooms, now opened to one large room) with queen size sleep sofa. The Dining room is off of the foyer and living room and comfortably seats 6-8. Our kitchen opens onto the dining room and, although small, it is well appointed as we both enjoy cooking. A full bath with claw foot tub is off the kitchen. From the kitchen you can access our rear screened porch and back patio with dining table and gas grill.
Upstairs there is a full bath with heated floor, our daughter's bedroom with a full size bed and our large bedroom with queen size bed and a gas log stove.

Guest Access

We will clear space in our fridge for you to use. Feel free to use condiments, spices etc.
Washer/dryer and iron available.
Although we do not have dresser space we do have hooks, coat racks and space to hold your suitcase.

Interaction with Guests

If our house interests you tell us a little about yourself and your party so that we can better assist you. Where are you from? What do you do? Does your party consist of adults only? What brings you to Charlottesville? Have you been here before? (we are happy to help you with directions) Will you be doing much cooking? Any special kitchen needs? (we can give you recommendations for grocery stores and/or restaurants if you like.)

We will be available to answer any questions and trouble shoot should any problems arise.

We will not be on premises during your stay.

The Neighborhood

This is a quiet residential neighborhood. The Downtown mall is well known for its fabulous restaurants, cafes, music venues, shopping and much more.

Getting around

We suggest walking as much as possible as we are located only 4 blocks away from the downtown mall. The free trolley stops at the mall and will take you to the UVA grounds and back. We are happy to help you plan day trips to local vineyards, historic sites (Monticello, Ash Lawn).

  • This was my first AirBnB experience and if was absolutely fantastic. Nell and Steve's home is lovely, the location is unbeatable, very safe and walkable. My experience with them has inspired me to use AirBnB again in the future.

  • Our stay at the Tharp's was one of the main reasons our group had such a phenomenal weekend. Our hosts were accommodating (including a last minute change of plans!), friendly, and went above and beyond to make us feel at home during our stay.
The house had great character, was incredibly close to the downtown mall, and served as the perfect landing spot for visits with UVa friends. We hope to visit again soon. Thank you Steve, Nell, and Mei Ling!

  • Our stay at the Tharp's house was really great. The house was very comfortable and only several blocks to the mall walking. We were lucky the weather was good so we were able grill out and have dinner in the backyard which was fantastic. Steve, Nell and Mei Ling are wonderful hosts and did everything to make our stay comfortable and fun. We are from Atlanta and my son and his wife and our grandchild (2 years old) came down from D.C. Thank you Steve, Nell and Mei Ling for making our visit so great.

What a lovely review, thank you! If it isn't too much to ask we would appreciate any input on what we could improve! We are curious to know if you saw much of our cat and was that a problem? Take care, thanks again, Nell

  • The Tharp's home was fantastic. We were able to walk to the downtown mall for dinner but felt like we were in an adorable neighborhood at the same time. The house was spacious (we had four adults and 4 kids and didn't feel crowded) and comfortable. The Tharps provided delicious muffins, as well. It was a great stay!

  • In a word, "AMAZING!" Steve, Nell and Mei Ling are the best. Their bungalow was everything we could hope for and more. Lovely back patio, a beautiful front porch with rockers and the coziest interior you could ever imagine. It really felt like home.

Another thing that felt like home? They had coffee and home made muffins ready for us upon our arrival! Who does that?! They do. A fabulous place with fabulous people. If every you're in Charlottesville, give their spot a whirl. It's so conveniently located and so homey. You won't regret it.

  • A group of us from New York (originally from Oregon) drove to C-Ville for the Oregon vs UVA football game. This house was one of the main reasons we had such a phenomenal weekend. It has such character, is in a great neighborhood and allowed our group to really bond with one another during the stay. The location was exactly where you want to be. Not in the center of town where it can be loud but close enough where you can walk there (5 min from the historic district).

Our hosts were accommodating from the minute we arrived. They always made sure we had everything we needed, from towels to restaurant recommendations.

I would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Charlottesville.

About
We are both UVA grads (Law and Nursing) who came to Charlottesville to go to school and...stayed...We have been here for 25+ years and truly love our town. We know Charlottesville very well and are familiar with the attractions and activities of the surrounding area (Blue Ridge Parkway/App trail, vineyards and breweries, UVA events etc) and are happy help you enjoy these. We have a ten year old daughter Mei Ling and a very sweet, completely self sufficient and skittish cat named Via. She loves the occasional rub but for the most part she is a loner and you will not have to do anything for her. Our cat does not play well with other pets, sorry. Our house is tidy and comfortable but lived in. Our kitchen, though small, is well appointed since we enjoy cooking. We will clear space in our fridge and freezer and feel free to use condiments, seasonings and spices. We will have tea and local coffee for you to wake up to. We have a private back patio with gas grill which is ideal for hosting friends and family. Other details: washer/dryer/iron available. Heated tile floors in kitchen and upstairs bath. On demand hot water heater (means no shortage of hot water!) Our location: we are a four block walk from the Historic Downtown pedestrian mall which features the areas best restaurants, galleries, food markets and entertainment venues. From the mall you can catch the free trolley to get to the UVA grounds.
