About this listing

The apartment is located on a quiet street but close to the city center, art and culture, restaurants and fine dining. We love our place because of the location, the open kitchen, the coziness on the loft and the high ceilings downstairs. We consider ourselves the lucky ones!

The apartment is suitable for couples, families (with kids), group of friends and business travellers.

The neighborhood

I recommend the local geothermal swimming pool Vesturbæjarlaug and the family run coffee shop Kaffihús Vesturbæjar across the street. Great way to start your day.
The shop on the cornar Kjötborg is a family run store where you can get almost anything you need.
The local bakery Björnsbakarí opens early in the morning every day and offers delicious bread and danish along with coffee or tea. Across the street you can buy flowers from the local florist.

Getting around

The appartment is a one hour drive from Keflavik International airport. The Flybus stops at BSI bus terminal where taxis will be waiting to take you to the appartment (5-10min drive).

Things to do and places to see:

Places not to be missed are:
1. Þingvellir - National park (1 hour drive from downtown Rvik)
2. The Blue lagoon - close to the airport (1 hour drive)
3. Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir - Golden circle (might be a bit crowded during this time of year)
4. South shore of Iceland to Vik (Seljaland waterfall, Skógafoss waterfall and the black sand and cliffs at Vik) - start early in the morning and come home late at night.

You could rent a car at the airport - (URL HIDDEN) or in the city. Better to book in advance though. If you take a taxi from the BSI bus terminal, where the Flybus stops, you would ask the taxi driver to take you to Ásvallagata 10a.

Now for the day trips I recommend you start at Þingvellir National Park (URL HIDDEN) and then go to Laugarvatn to visit Fontana ((URL HIDDEN) for a nice bath and lunch on your way to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir. On the way back I recommend you visit Kerið (URL HIDDEN) an old crater. Don't worry about getting dark - it doesn't :-)

If you take a trip to the south shore I recommend you go all the way to the glacier lagoon (URL HIDDEN) On the way you would see the Eyjafjallajökull glacier ((URL HIDDEN) that erupted a few years ago.

In the city I do my shopping at Melabúðin, Kjötborg, Bonus, Kronan or Netto Granda - (URL HIDDEN) It is very close by and in that vicinity you can find a few specialty shops like the cheese shop Búrið, Ice parlor Valdís, cake shop 17sortir and a few designer shops.
The main shopping street downtown is Laugavegur and the shopping centers are Kringlan (10min drive) and Smáralind (20min drive).

For a bit of culture and sagas I recommend to buy the Visit Reykjavik card: (URL HIDDEN) with full access to all the museums within walking distance. You'll get access to all the geothermal swimming pools as well.

On a typical summer weekend we usually start by going to the swimming pool nearby Vesturbæjarlaug (URL HIDDEN) and then have some coffee or even brunch at the nearby coffee shop Kaffivest (URL HIDDEN) If the weather is nice we often take a walk by the sea and enjoy the view of the nearby mountains. After lunch we go downtown for some shopping and some more coffee (Eymundsson book café, Mál og Menning book café, Reykjavik roaster ((URL HIDDEN)

We also love to go to the geothermal beach at Nauthólsvík (URL HIDDEN) and have some lunch or weekend brunch at the Satt restaurant nearby (URL HIDDEN) From there you could walk up to the Pearl (again geothermal - tanks) where you can enjoy the view over the city free of charge (URL HIDDEN)

If you care for wine and bear you really should buy a few bottles at the duty free store in the arrival hall (where you pick up your luggage). It is much cheaper then in the Vinbudin (monopoly store - not open on Sundays b.t.w.). But the nearest Vinbud would be a 10min walk from the apartment - in Austurstræti right across from the Laundromat café (lovely place for a family brunch).

Other things to note

Our coffee machine is a Nespresso so you might want to bring along a few capsules since Nespresso does not have a store in Iceland (yet). You can buy René capsules at the grocery store (Bonus).
