The Space

Please note, except for very last minute bookings, arrival / departure days are Mondays and Fridays. If you're looking for other dates, try our Shepherd's hut or Studio apartment at Manesty.

Cocklety How Byre is part a 17th century converted barn that sits at the peaceful foot of Catbells, overlooking the fields, woods and fells of the Borrowdale valley. We built the Byre extension in 2000 with great care and attention and are really proud of the result! It's a beautiful cottage that blends the original stonework and beams of the old byre with a modern vaulted ceiling extension that curves along the contour of the fellside to make the most of the spectacular views. The cottage is extremely spacious and the fixtures and fitting are of a very high quality, with La-Z-Boy leather arm chairs, solid oak floors and a sound system. Treat yourself to some luxury!

The cottage is all on one level. The bedroom has a king size double bed, fabulous views east and north, luxury 100% wool carpet, and big comfy cane rocking armchairs. There is a separate large walk in wardrobe/dressing room with window to the fell (plenty of space for a cot). The en suite bathroom/wc has a shower over the bath.

There is a lovely big oak fitted kitchen with dining area at the other end of the cottage from the bedroom. It has original exposed beams and stonework, a range style cooker, dishwasher and all the equipment you'll need to cook up a storm.

Between the kitchen and the bedroom is an open-plan living area, with solid oak floor and rugs, and a double height vaulted ceiling. You can relax after a walk in reclining leather armchairs and sofa. There's also the additional sofa bed for the third guest. The living room's French doors open onto the patio and the wonderful views across the valley of Borrowdale. If you get bored of the view (unlikely we think!) there's a 32″ flat screen TV with DVD player & free-sat TV and a sound system (ipod and mp3 player compatible).

At the back of the cottage is a utility room with sink, washing machine, drier and back door.

Outside we've made a private fell garden behind the Byre with beautiful panoramic views and water feature. At the front, the patio & gravelled area outside front door look out across the valley. There's a choice of garden furniture including recliners, table and chairs. Parking for 2 cars by the cottage.

Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with it's teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The 'Honister Ramber' bus takes you into Keswick from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the launch runs all-year round, as does a bus from Grange.

We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 11 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate.

Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.

  • Alan and Alice, his daughter, were terrific hosts - friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The cottage was beautiful, spacious, and well-equipped and the surrounding areas were idyllic. In terms of location, it was easily accessible from Keswick but it feels far enough for a perfect weekend getaway. We are already planning our return later in the year.

  • A very warm and welcoming cottage. Not too hard to find once you get your bearings. It was clean and accommodating with everything one may need. It felt like living at home (although it's in a much more beautiful and serene locale than where I live). The kitchen was fully stocked with appliances and cookware to whip up a meal. The bed was warm and comfortable. The bathroom clean and immaculate. The Leylands made our stay truly accessible to our needs. They were available for any questions or issues but we never had to bother them. Anything you needed to know about the area, be it for food, attractions, shopping, transport and hiking was conveniently packaged for their guests' use. Of particular value were the turn-by-turn directions and map of the myriad walking/hiking tours starting right at the doorstep. It's portability ensured we didn't get lost. The only downside of our stay was the wifi connection. There's hardly a signal for your mobile phone so some wifi would've been appreciated. Though the only place you can access the wifi is by sitting by the stove in the kitchen. And even when you got the signal it wasn't strong enough to even view the web. Luckily I printed out all the info I needed and ensured I accessed what I needed when I was out and about in town. But that wasn't too much of a damper. I suppose we all can use a vacation from our devices as well. I would definitely return if I decide to stay in the area again!

    Response from Alan & Cheryl:

Thanks for your review Emilio and we are so pleased you found our cottage comfortable and welcoming and that you found our welcome information useful. We're very sorry to hear that the wifi wasn't working too well for you - we are in a rural location so speed is sometimes variable, however the reception in the cottage should be more widespread than you describe. Now that we know about the issue we will investigate as soon as the current guests depart. Thanks for letting us know.

Alan's family has lived at Manesty, in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years. Our children (now grown up) are the sixth generation to have lived here. Our family has a long history of welcoming visitors to this magical part of Borrowdale and we are proud to continue the tradition of sharing our beautiful little corner of England. If you want, we're able to provide you with a wealth of local information and tips. Our 'walks from the door' is just one way that we try to make sure you get the most from your Lake District holiday. We live next door so we're always on hand to answer questions, help you book activities and recommend things to do but far enough away though that you don't need to see us if you don't want to. We're really proud of our cottages and glamping accommodation and love our area. We hope to welcome you soon!
