Daniel and his family were wonderful hosts ! He took care that I felt like at home and being both french we had long conversation together, wether it be about Vietnam culture, places to visit, useful tips or even about France news. I was invited multiple times to share vietnamese lunch or dinner with his family, also given the freedom to come and go as I wished (even if they lock the doors at night which means once you are in and everybody goes to sleep you cannot go out again). His young daughter is amazing as she already speaks vietnamese, english and french quite fluently.

The location was fun out of the tourist area in a residential area. The hosts did not speak English, except their 12 year old daughter who was very good. However language wasn't the main problem with communication as I spoke French well enough. They only spoke to answer questions and I felt an intruder and unwelcome in their family home. I found their attitude unpleasant to the extent that I left early. Really spoilt my stay in Hanoi.

I had a wonderful home stay with the Goulian's family over the last weekend of September '13. My host family was laid back and, most important, knowledgeable about food. I arrived in Hanoi with the main goal of sampling Vietnamese street food. Madam Goulian had some helpful tips for me. Moreover, Madam Goulian herself was a good cook. I even got to sample some new flavours from her kitchen and the family's rooftop garden! My limited French and Vietnamese language skills were no hinderance to our communication because Ms. Goulian (the daughter) was a charming interpreter, tri-lingual in French, Vietnamese and English. The house I stayed in was situated in Ba Dinh District south of West Lake but only one short bus ride to the Old Quarters. Having experienced the constant hustle and bustle of motorcycles traversing even the narrowest streets of Hanoi, I was convinced I made the right decision of not lodging in the Old Quarters. There was more charm in waking at the sounds of fighting cocks next door. My best memories were reading on the balcony of my own room. That was when I simply indulged in the simplicity of life that traveling offered. Ben, a visitor from Hong Kong
