Magical authentic old Cevenole stone house with a well-restored and spacious contemporary feel inside: tasteful, books, 3 terraces, walks, peace, fountain, glorious sunsets, rivers. In the untouched medieval hamlet of Esparon in the South of France.

The Space

La Bastide d'Esparon is a haven full of breathtaking views in a uniquely authentic medieval hamlet perched on an eagle's nest at 650 meters high.
Two great old houses converted for gentle family living, linked by a terrace outside, doors inside. I reunited the 2 floors 7 years ago when I did a major renovation.
- ideal for a family of 4/5 if you rent the top floor only with 2 doubles and a single.
- and ideal for gentle family living for a group of up to 14 friends if you rent the whole house with 8 bedrooms and 11 beds (3 doubles with double beds, 2 doubles with 2 single beds, 3 singles, one additional single bed in one of the doubles).

La Bastide is a typical Cevenol stone house. A very well restored and refined atmosphere, with high ceilings, white walls, and a great feeling of luminousness. Some say it was the location of the old Merovingian castle. The house still has old sinks, carved stones, vaulted ceilings, which attest to its past history.

You are in the South of France and you feel you are on the top of the world, between mountain and sky and sun. You are living indoor and outdoor with constant views from the windows and terraces on the untouched and intact sunny countryside of Les Cevennes Meridionales with its rolling mountains, high plateau and big sky.
A well-restored place, much loved by the creative, colour-conscious family who have owned it for 50 years. Everywhere are lovely kilim rugs and pieces brought back from the owners' travels – fine old wooden chests, antique wardrobes, contemporary art and books.
A most atmospheric, esthetic retreat from the busy world cooled by mountain breezes in the blistering summer, with superb walks, rivers for swimming or canoeing down in the valley, unusual excursions galore - and just 6 kilometers from all shopping.

The hamlet of Esparon is an untouched medieval village dating from the XI th century in a very picturesque ensemble of 25 houses with a chapel and a running fountain, and remains of ramparts and towers. It is located in The Parc National des Cevennes protected by the UNESCO World Heritage for its authentic natural landscapes.

La Bastide d'Esparon is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon. 40 minutes from Montpellier and Nîmes airports, bus and train stations. From here, you can visit the area of The Languedoc, Les Cevennes, Les Causses and go to all the great summer festivals of theatre in Avignon, photography in Arles and Sete, lyrical opera in Aix or just take great walks and enjoy the fantastic rivers and trails as well as the untouristy quality of the region.

Interaction with Guests

Here are some testimonials go guests who have stayed:
Jo Jenkin (UK): 12 People, May 2014
"Our Party of 12 adults spent a wonderful 10 days at la Bastide d'Esparon. Everyone was delighted with the house, the restoration, furnishings and lovingly placed artefacts.
The property is clean and well maintained and the caretaker very helpful. The whole place has a very special ambiance and every day started and ended with very convivial breakfasts and dinners on the terraces or around the table in the living room. The house is in a superb location with stunning views and although it is quite a steep road to reach it, the road was always empty and it was never a problem.
There is a supermarket within 10 mins drive and shopping was easy. We walked every day, both from the house and on the GR's within a 25 km radius. There are some classic walks, spectacular views and lovely villages.
It was a very happy stay in a very special place."

Arielle de Gasquet (France), July 2013. 6 People.
"Maison avec beaucoup de charme et une vue exceptionnelle, dans un hameau typique. Calme absolu, belles promenades et baignades dans les rivières."

Paul Sara (USA), June 2013. 9 people.
"Martine is an amazing host. I have stayed in both of her of listings. Her house in the mountain town of Esparon is one of the most beautiful places I have been to. It is magnificently decorated with objects from around the world, art pieces which range from abstract to picturesque, and is abundant in plants and vines. There are multiple terraces with fireplaces and bbqs, and the rooms are very cozy and charming. The food of the region is exquisite as well. The weather is warm but not humid during the day and the night is fresh so you can get that perfect sleep. The view on the valley and the stars at night are breathtaking. The village is quiet but far from being lifeless. It is a great pad to visit other parts of the region and to come back to in the evening. There are rivers and canyons at proximity to the house which are beautiful and refreshing. I could not recommend this place more; my stay there has been excellent, relaxing and therapeutic."

On the premises when I am not there, I have a great super who has been taking care of the house for the past 20 years. He is great.
I am very computer savvy so I am always reachable by mail/SMS.

The Neighborhood

YOU ARE IN A MEDIEVAL HAMLET:
The hamlet of Esparon is medieval, with its roman chapel from the XIth century, its pine forest on top of the village and its 25 houses and its running fountain.

It is a dead end, you reach it after 3 kilometers uphill and then you are at 700 meters--the eagle’s-eye views are amazing and it is genuine rural France overlooking the National Park of the Cevennes as well as the high plateaux of Les Causses. Getting around

You will need a car to reach the hamlet and to get around to the other local villages and the rivers and all the eco-tourism in the region.
There is good public transportation to Nimes or Montpellier, and then really cheap buses to Le Vigan which is 8 kilometers where you can go and get your guests.

Other Things to Note

All my guests always say the house is magical. They all want to come back. There are no cars. It is like being back in another time. With its breathtaking views from every where on the sky and the hamlet and the soft Cevennes mountains, airy but colorful and contemporary decoration.
It is an old stone house but with very high ceilings and full of light and the walls are all white (with paintings and art on them-but not too much!).

  • I held a painting retreat at Bastide d'Esparon with 7 artists attending - 11 of us all in all. The property and surrounding landscape is perfect for landscape painting and the house lends itself to big meals - we had breakfast and dinner in the dining area inside and lunch outside in the internal courtyard under the blue sky. Everybody loved the house and the views from the terrace - a wonderful painting spot and also where we had our evening drinks before dinner. The kitchen is big enough to cater for a large group in. And it was a joy to fill the house and run the painting week there. Martine has been answering ALL my questions via email and (website hidden) since I first found the house on air B and B - over 6 months ago - she had been wonderfully helpful and I hope I can hold another event at Bastide d'Esparon - also I hope to visit her in New York and feel I have made a friend - I have had a great sense of community - during out stay I was sending Martine photos via email and it was very nice to be I. Contact in this way - she also gave me local tips and advice on where to go and what is nice to visit locally. Thank you Martine! ❤️

About
I am a fine art photographer. I like spaces and colors. I was born in Paris, France and presently live in New York. I live in 2 houses which are my havens and which I rent. When I am not in my house in The Bronx from which I work, I am in my house in the South of France. The house in the South of France is a family house where i have spent my summers since I was 5. I am a photographer working in New York. This has been my country house where I have spent many summers and it is a perfect contrast from the city life. I like the perfect calm and the luminous space I have in this house with the great views on the rolling hills and the light on the mountains of the Cevennes and the high plateaux of the Causses. This house is my sanctuary. I love the evenings watching the sunset with a glass of rose on the southern terrace, going to the rivers with a picnic, hiking in the mountains.
