The tower is created out of the restoration of an old abandoned stable situated in the centre of a small countryside hamlet called Sanguineto. This place takes its name from the famous bloody battle of 217 BC fought between the Roman army and the Carthaginian army (led by Hannibal). Today this area is classified as one of outstanding natural beauty, where traditional farming methods are still very much in evidence, the major crops being olives and wine grapes. The propertie have been luxuriously finished using traditional building methods and materials combined with the latest technology. It has its own independent liquid propane gas (LPG) central-heating system, with the boiler located outside the building, as well as its own electricity. A pergola, and a private garden giving out onto the surrounding landscape, offering a magnificent view over Lake Trasimeno, complete the building. The tower has two floors, one bedroom, a living room with kitchenette, one bathroom, private garden, and pergola. Swimming-pool.
Everything about the say was nice. After a little initial difficulty finding the place (no fault of Michele's; his directions were quite detailed), we were happy to find the place was exactly as pictured. Immaculately clean and very unique. (Just be careful if lugging large suitcases up the spiral steps.) We didn't get to meet Michele; we were there in late Oct. right in the middle of olive oil production season, but his wife was quite gracious as we communicated in broken English & Italian. And we got fresh olive oil the next morning, as Michele's mother poured us a bottle from the huge tank, which was made just the day before. If you're into history, the place is right along the Sanguineto road, where Hannibal defeated/slaughtered tens of thousands of Roman soldiers in that very area; great little displays along the road in English & Italian explaining it all. Some people posted comments about the tiny bathroom & shower. Yeah, a little small, but no problem for either of us. Wish the weather was a little less rainy/foggy the 2 days we were there, as we missed out a bit on the great lake views. But one nice plus was their farm cat Led, who stayed in the tower off & on with during much of our stay (we're cat lovers, so we were more than happy with it. Lovely orange tabby. Very convenient to Cortona and the hilltop/wine towns of Tuscany (kind of silly we were in Umbria but really didn't see any of the great Umbrian towns). So for the reasonable price, beautiful location and unique Tower experience, we'd highly recommend the Tower. (Steve/Sharon)
The place was really nice, amazing view, very cute house. A little on the small side. Michele was very flexible in his booking schedule although we only booked very shortly before. That being said, communication afterwards was a bit slow, but that might not be his fault.
The tower itself is great, beautiful surroundings - we'll come back!
Great spot! Quiet, beautiful view - very peaceful and romantic!
It is hard to find so make sure you get directions! We would return in a heartbeat. The shower is completely normal for European standards just as a note.
This rental has many assets: good location, nice view, quiet private property, outdoor dining table, good kitchen, tv, wifi, clean & comfortable inside, pool, lounging chairs and recliners at the poolside. They have wine and olive oil made locally. The restaurant kitchen can open for you by request. Historic site (Hannibal battle site). Proximity to Cortona for quick drive. The lakeshore at Tuoro is uninteresting. Cats, family dog, wasps outside were common, as was the occasional bug inside. Friendly owners, very hospitable and relaxed. We stayed a week in August and the AC kept us cool.
We had a fantatic stay in this fantastic place, with nice people.
Staying in this tower was a super experience. The view from the tower (and the "garden" around the tower) is super: olive trees and behind that you can see the Trasimeno Lake.
We didn't see Michele, but we were welcomed by Catia, who was very friendly and welcoming us in the tower. She was also available during our stay if we needed anything (and brought us delicious Italian breads).
You can visit Cortona, Perugia and Assisi perfectly from this place, because it's just 5-10 minutes driving to the
In the tower itself: great bed, everything very clean and we found the shower quite good (some people mentioned that is was small, but we've had worse showers in Italy).
Enjoyed staying in the Borgo. The house is very complete and a special experience. We loved the beautiful view over the lake Trasimeno. Small disadvantage is the small shower (but on the other hand: no matter the size you will appreciate the your shower at home again).
As for the swimming pool: it is open from May 1st till September 1st, so not all season.
Didn't meet Michele, but that was no problem.
The tower is absolutely beautiful, and Michele is as gracious a host as can be expected. Well, we never met her directly, but she was extremely accommodating via email and help was never far away in the shape of her relatives and friends that live nearby. Our itinerary changed last minute, so we arrived almost 4 hours earlier than we thought we would, and Michele and company were lovely and kind, and got the property ready in no time! As for the place itself, it's just stunning. The views are lovely, it's quiet and peaceful, and there is a full kitchen with everything you need to make meals for yourself, if you choose not to take Michele's INCREDIBLE restaurant recommendations. We were there for a week, so we ate in and out quite a bit, and we were always happy. The bed is extremely comfortable, and the set up of the tower is lovely.
The ONLY thing you might not like is the shower, because it's certainly on the small side. Now, granted, I'm a very big guy (6'3", about 300 lbs), but even for my wife, who is a normal sized person, it was tight. That said, it should NOT deter you from staying here! I managed just fine, and the place is so lovely you should absolutely visit. It's also right in the middle of Tuscany, so you can go all over the country within an hour or two.
A great renovated and well designed tower in a tranquil setting, with absolutely stunning view of the country side of a small town & lake. The interior is well furnished and homely. We arrived at night, so it was kind of hard to find in the dark, but it was well worth the time & effort to get there. If you want experience living under the Tuscan (actually in Umbria) sun, this is the place to go.
