About this listing
Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes, magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their five year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie.
There is ample parking space at The Lock House and walking/cycling access is enhanced by the adjacent Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
Great location for visiting Newgrange and some other sites in the Boyne Valley. Mike is very helpful in finding things in the area. Space is relatively private but might feel a little tight for some travelers. The dog is a delightful welcoming party! Nice continental breakfasts in the morning.
We received a warm welcome by Mike, Shane and Billy. Mike went out of his way to purchase tickets in advance for the Newgrange Monument tour...this was such a thoughtful touch and assured us space on sold out tours. He even called ahead for a dinner reservation for us. The house is charming and well appointed, and perfectly located along the canal just steps away form a nice walking path. The beds were very comfortable and provided one of my best night's sleep in Ireland. Thanks again Mike! PS, great coffee : )
The Lock-keepers Cottage is a beautiful bed and breakfast located just north of Dublin. This was the last stay on our trip, and we were looking for somewhere quiet, and close to Dublin Airport which we found here. The room is very private, and comfortable. Our greeting from Billie was great, and Mike has a beautiful, welcoming family. Mike and his wife Sophie are very knowledgeable of the home, the local area as well as recommendations for restaurants. Overall, a great stay, and a great way to end our vacation in Ireland.

About the Host, Mike
I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
