About this listing
Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes in a magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their five year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie.
There is ample parking space at The Lock House and walking/cycling access is enhanced by the adjacent Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
