Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes, magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their four year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie. Walking and cycling access to the house is enhanced by the near completion of the Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
I had a comfortable stay here. Mike and Sophie were great hosts, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included. Wish I could have stayed longer. I would recommend highly.
What a wonderful stay!!! The kindness, and hospitality was truly amazing!!! The accommodations were great, and a beautiful location next to the locks. I am very appreciative for the flexibility, as i was arriving late, and they were even able to give me a ride from the bus station! What a wonderful experience!!!
Mike is a wonderful host with a clean, convenient (email hidden) out-of-towners we needed his advice regarding dining.....he actually led us to a great restaurant in his own car. I HIGHLY recommend this host. THANK YOU MIKE
This is the perfect place to stay for a comfortable Irish welcome - Mike and his family (including their happy dog) were gracious, generous, and informative. Mike communicated with us clearly throughout, including perfect instructions for short drive from airport. What a great location - walking path across the street goes along the canal straight to Battle of the Boyne site and if you are visiting Newgrange, it is only a few minutes away. Mike says the bath is 10% shared but you will actually have it to yourself (spacious, clean, private). Their cottage is amazing and we felt at home the minute Mike welcomed us in - with a hot pot of tea! Lovely family, lovely listing - and ask Shane to introduce you to his dinosaurs.
Mike was responsive throughout and was very accomodating to allow last minute changes (my son staying) and our late arrival. Accommodations were just as described and the area in and around the house was great. Mike made us feel very welcome and set put a nice breakfast He even offered to help my son with some internship contacts. His dog is a love and his son is very sweet. All in all our stay worked out fine.
Mike was a great host! What a lovely family! We LOVED our stay at the Lock Keepers Cottage. Mike was really great in helping us plan some local sightseeing. Everything looked exactly as it was described and we were very comfortable and happy. They even thought about little touches like mineral water in our room and a pretty flower. Mike also provided a nice breakfast for us and a great recommendation of a Brasserie nearby to have lunch at. This was my first Airbnb experience and I would stay again without a doubt next time. So many things to do in this area!

I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
