About this listing
Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes, magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their five year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie.
There is ample parking space at The Lock House and walking/cycling access is enhanced by the adjacent Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
Lovely stay at Mike's place. Mike was very helpful and nice.He is living in a beautiful old house close to Newgrange at a wonderful place. We enjoyed the breakfast after having slept well
Fantastic location and a wonderful Irish family in a historic lock-keeper's house. Steps to the locks and canal and a few minutes walk to the Battle of the Boyne visitor Center. Driving to all the famous sights could be done easily within one day: Newgrange, Howth, Hill of Tara, Manasterboice and 2 Abbey ruins. The welcome was warm and genuinely friendly. Young Shane and the golden retreiverr Billie gere added bonuses. Thanks for a great host, comfortable room and good touring advice. We highly recomend Mike's Lock House as the best Irish experience. Thanks
After a long drive, we found Mike and Sophie's home with no problem using Mike's excellent directions. We received a warm welcome from their friendly dog, Billie, and and equally warm reception from Mike. We appreciated Mike's suggestion of a nearby restaurant for a hearty meal, quick service and great value. When we booked this location, we were not familiar with the historical features of the area. We changed our plans to take advantage of the proximity to the stone age Irish passage tomb at Newgrange and were glad we did. If we come back to Ireland again, we would definitely love to stay here again. This is a great location for exploring this region and staying in a home with so much character is not something we have an opportunity to do where we live.
Mike was a very good host, making sure my husband and I had what we needed. The room was adequate, and the breakfast was a perfect way to start the day. We enjoyed our conversations with Mike, and appreciated his willingness to be of help in our travel plans. The location is very convenient to Newgrange and even closer to the Battle of Boyne site.
Our stay at The Lock House was the perfect place to start our journey. Mike and his family were gracious hosts, going above and beyond to make us feel welcome in their home, and to Ireland. Their place is in a great location for visiting all the historic sites in the Boyne Valley.....walking in their backyard was amazing! The canal, which is right across the street, has a lovely walking path along side it, which we took almost all the way to town (we were tired and jet lagged, it was our first day). All said and done I would absolutely stay there again. Thank you again Mike!!!!! Take care!

About the Host, Mike
I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
