About This Listing
Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes, magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their four year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie. Walking and cycling access to the house is enhanced by the near completion of the Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
Mike and Sophie made us feel very welcome without being obtrusive! They went out of their way to accomodate our requirements! There are plenty of atractions right on the door step! Lovely family!
Lovely house by the lock and great location for visiting the historic monuments at Newgrange. We had a very warm welcome from Mike and his family. Mike made sure we had everything we needed. Enjoyed playing with his young son Shane.
We had a wonderful stay at The Lock Keeper's Cottage in Drogheda. Mike was a tremendous host who provided great directions and a fabulous welcome, even making a reservation for dinner at a local restaurant for our first night as we were arriving in the late afternoon. The whole family made us feel very comfortable in their home and it was amazing to still have an independent area. Mike and his family did everything possible to make our stay a great one and it was a great way to commence our time in Ireland. Thank you very much.
Mike is such a nice guy! His home is absolutely breathtaking and his family is so very nice as well. He laid out a great breakfast assortment for us to choose from and we had some great conversation about Ireland. He gave us a great dinner suggestion and was very helpful with directions. The room is beautiful and the bathroom is as well! It was so quiet and peaceful there. We would definitely stay here again. Great location too!
Merci Mike.
I had a comfortable stay here. Mike and Sophie were great hosts, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included. Wish I could have stayed longer. I would recommend highly.
What a wonderful stay!!! The kindness, and hospitality was truly amazing!!! The accommodations were great, and a beautiful location next to the locks. I am very appreciative for the flexibility, as i was arriving late, and they were even able to give me a ride from the bus station! What a wonderful experience!!!

About the Host, Mike
I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
