Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes, magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their four year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie. Walking and cycling access to the house is enhanced by the near completion of the Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
Mike was responsive throughout and was very accomodating to allow last minute changes (my son staying) and our late arrival. Accommodations were just as described and the area in and around the house was great. Mike made us feel very welcome and set put a nice breakfast He even offered to help my son with some internship contacts. His dog is a love and his son is very sweet. All in all our stay worked out fine.
Mike was a great host! What a lovely family! We LOVED our stay at the Lock Keepers Cottage. Mike was really great in helping us plan some local sightseeing. Everything looked exactly as it was described and we were very comfortable and happy. They even thought about little touches like mineral water in our room and a pretty flower. Mike also provided a nice breakfast for us and a great recommendation of a Brasserie nearby to have lunch at. This was my first Airbnb experience and I would stay again without a doubt next time. So many things to do in this area!
Absolutely Charming! From Billie the Golden Retriever who was waiting for us at the gate to pull in to sharing tea and chocolate with Mike & his son on arrival, everything was lovely! Comfy bed, great shower, almost no stairs, and perfect location to see the NewGrange Passage Mound. Also, Mike's dinner recommendation was spot-on. We loved finding this place! Thanks!
We consider ourselves lucky to have found the lock keeper's cottage. It was a lovely place to finish two weeks in Ireland. Mike made us feel at home instantly. He showed genuine interest in our tales of travel, and made excellent recommendations for places to have dinner. We'd go right back!
We had a really lovely stay at Mike's. The house is very homely , large farmhouse style kitchen, cosy sitting room and very peaceful, with just the lambs in the fields to wake us up. The house was warm when we arrived even though the family were away. Everything was ready for us, down to the fire log in the fireplace ready to start a roaring fire. Unfortunately we didn't get to meet Mike and his family due to an unexpected trip but they are clearly very thoughtful hosts. We would certainly visit again.
Mike was a wonderful host. He greeted us with tea and traditional Irish bread, and Shane and Billie gave us a warm welcome too. The room was clean and large, with a very nice adjoining bathroom. The house is located close to the main motorway and the Dublin airport but is in a nice quiet area
I would definitely recommend Mike's cottage as a lovely place to stay in the Donore area. Before arrival, Mike's communications were prompt, clear, and friendly. The room was exactly as described and so accommodating to travelers, with plenty of maps, guidebooks, flyers, and handouts to make your stay more productive and enjoyable. The cottage is comfortable in every way and includes all necessary amenities such as plenty of pots and pans, shampoo, clean sheets and towels, a nice shower, etc. The bed was very restful and the room was clean. The hosts are friendly and welcoming in every way.

I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
