The Space

We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their four year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie. Walking and cycling access to the house is enhanced by the near completion of the Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.

  • A comfortable room in a cute cottage, close to everything, great walks along the lock, and quiet and peaceful.

  • Mike and Sophie along with the rest of the family were absolutely fabulous. We were so late due to a very delayed flight. They took care of us from the moment we arrived. They were real lifesavers! The only problem was that we only spent one day. Had a great experience. Wish we spent more time in the area and with the family.

  • From the moment Mike and his son picked us up from the bus station with juice boxes, we knew we were in for a treat. Their home is cozy and nice, and Mike & Sophie made sure we were comfortable and felt welcome. They have a great dog, a beautiful location, and lots of dinosaurs everywhere.

  • We greatly enjoyed our brief stay at the Lock-keeper's Cottage. Mike and his family were very friendly and hospitable. Their home is a picturesque renovated cottage facing a small canal and footpath for walkers and runners. Immediately behind the property are fields on which sheep graze, and the Battle of the Boyne site entrance is literally just down the road. We slept like the exhausted people we were, having just flown in from Canada the night before.

  • We had a very nice two day stay with Mike, Sophie, their young son Shane, and they're loving dog Billie. This is a gracious family with whom we very much enjoyed spending our vacation time. Their delightful lock keepers house is ideally located just a half hour drive from Dublin airport, and is near many wonderful Irish sites. Some of these include Newgrange, Knowth, the historic and interesting Battle of the Boyne, the Hill of Tara, Mellifont Abbey, and the town of Trim. Needless to say, there are plenty of things to do in this very interesting area of Ireland.

  • Mike and Sophie were wonderful hosts. Their home is located close to many sights and they provided some great suggestions for dinner. It was really nice to be welcomed with a cup of tea and have the opportunity to relax in front of the fire.

  • Mike & Sophie were so sweet and very accommodating! My husband and I got a little lost on the way there and arrived late, so unfortunately we did not get to spend much time with them, but the time we did spend was great. The place was beautiful and very clean. They have a 4 year son with a strong affinity for dinosaurs, and he is adorable! :) Just a tip: follow Mike's written directions, NOT the map directions provided by the website,(the map is the wrong location!) and you will be fine!

  • Mike was an amazing host. He was able to tell us where to go and all about the area. The house was clean, beautiful and the bed was perfect. The town nearby was lovely and the countryside is gorgeous. I regret only staying one night. I couldn't find any faults with Mike or the house. I recommend staying there!

  • We loved our short stay in this quaint and picturesque cottage. The location is superb for visiting the many sights in the area: Newgrange, Knowth, Trim Castle, Battle of the Boyne. Friendly family. Mike was so thoughtful as to deliver some items we left behind to the visitor center at Newgrange. That is an additional personal touch.

  • Staying with Mike and his family was like staying with old friends. Even before we arrived Mike had offered his helpfulness. On arrival we were greeted as friends, given a nice room with a good bed and then we all went for a lovely walk, chatting along as we went through beautiful surroundings - they do after all live in the countryside. In the evening they suggested a very good place for us to eat - and even offered to drive us.
Breakfast the next morning was fresh and very good.
And yes, Mike - we will be back. :)

About
I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
