About This Listing
Enjoy a restful stay, on the banks of the historic Boyne river near Drogheda, Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The fully restored Lock House is just outside Drogheda and 30 mins from Dublin Airport. Warm welcomes, magical setting!
We're not quite sure when the Lock House was first built but the canal lock opposite was constructed in 1778, only 88 years after the Battle of the Boyne, and there would have been a lock-keeper's cottage on the site since then. Our best guess is that the current building, whose main walls are 2ft(60cm) thick, dates back to about 1900. It's been fully renovated but retains a charming, quirky character which guests seem to enjoy. Current inhabitants are owners Sophie and Mike, their four year old son Shane and affectionate Golden Retriever Billie. Walking and cycling access to the house is enhanced by the near completion of the Boyne Greenway walk/cycle way, which connects Drogheda to the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre and will go on to connect to the Bru an Boinne Interpretative Centre at Newgrange. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions.
We cannot recommend this place highly enough. The House and setting is beautiful, our room was cosy and comfortable. Mike was always on hand to provide useful information about the area but also gave us plenty of space to relax. Mike went beyond the call of duty to make us feel welcome and is an exemplary host. The house is a perfect location to see the sights, is in lovely countryside and still close to Dublin.
I had a lovely stay at Mike and Sophie's. A wonderful friendly family home. I would happily stay again anytime
Mike was very welcoming and was accommodating of our late arrival. He welcomed us with a cup of tea and a friendly chat. Him and his wife happily shared their home but still gave us privacy. The room was comfortable and we had everything that we needed. Breakfast was great and we would absolutely recommend his home to anyone

About the Host, Mike
I am very fortunate to be living, with my wife Sophie, young son Shane and Billie the Golden Retriever, in a beautiful riverside setting at Oldbridge, just outside Drogheda, on the site of the Battle of the Boyne. I work as a support person for people with learning disabilities and teach mindfulness meditation for stress reduction and other benefits. I enjoy music, sports, meeting people and sitting quietly doing nothing.
