We enjoyed our stay at Cristina's seaside cottage. When we ran out of gas, Senor Antonio stopped by and fixed the problem immediately. Many thanks!
Cristina was hosted us for two nights at the start of our Azores visit and for two at the end at her quiet and comfortable accomodation on the sea. She was very welcoming and gave us all the information we needed to have a nice stay.
Although it was not swimming season yet, the natural ocean pool was gorgeous and a nice place to hang out.
At the start of our visit we stayed in the sweet little cottage behind the main house, at the end of our trip in the large 2 bedroom apartment with a very well equipped kitchen and a patio overlooking the sea.
Cristina's house is absolutely incredible; not only is it one of the cheapest holiday lets in São Miguel that we found (in April 2015), it far and away offers the most, in terms of facilities and experience. We were astonished at the amount of garden we had, the house comes next to a few small fields of banana and bamboo plants, along with your own private natural swimming pool and access to the sea. The house itself was charming and quaint, as well as clean, with a little log burner, outdoor barbecue, and all the amenities you'd need for a week exploring the beautiful Açores. Cristina's friendly dog roams the grounds, but he is extremely well-trained and refuses to enter the house - he will be your best friend but only if you want him to be.
As a host, Cristina was absolutely fantastic - we arrived over an hour late in the dead of night and she was very understanding and didn't mind at all. She even bought us food for our first breakfast, and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed.
Staying at Cristina's quinta is a brilliantly authentic Azorean experience and definitely the best taste of island life; in the middle of a quiet village with very friendly and helpful locals, you have everything you need and all the natural beauty you could ever wish for and more. I will definitely be returning
we had a good time at the place and the view to the atlantic is fantastic. Ribeira das Tainhas is not too far from Furnas and Lagoa do Fogo. It was cool to have the possibility to use the chimney and take a bath. Christina was a very welcoming and caring host.
Even though we didnt need it much, the internet didn't work. But well.....its better to unplug during the holidays anyway ;)
Of all the places we stayed in the Azores, this was the least comfortable. Cristina was pleasant and welcoming, and made herself available if needed. The accommodations, however, during the time of year that we were traveling (February), were damp and chilly. Unfortunately, the wood-burning stove, which is usually a working feature of the apartment, was not functional while we were there, and having the use of that would have made a huge difference. We felt the kitchen was lacking in utensils. The beds were not very inviting (also damp and smelled of mildew) and more blankets would have been welcome. It didn't feel as if the place was ready to be used off-season. The biggest problem for us was that the warm (not hot) water for a shower lasted no longer than a minute, then turned cold. The overall impression brought to mind the discomforts of medieval life. If we had come in the height of summer, and it had been bright warm sunshine, the dim lighting, lack of hot water and chilly atmosphere might not have left such a lasting impression. One other note: Cristina has a dog, a very friendly, exuberant dog (one that likes to jump up to lick the faces of guests), that roamed free during our stay. Be forewarned, he may be too friendly for some tastes. The apartment is in a lovely spot, on a hill right above the ocean shore where there is a pool constructed of native materials that holds seawater, a 3 minute walk from the door. Her place can be tricky to find from the town. We had to enlist the help of a local to help us find the place.
I don´t know Why, you didn´t tell me that the water was not so warm?! It was necessary, that I know to resolve the problem, to make everything worked well. So, it´s not my falt if you didn´t tell anything, because I always wanted that my guets had the best conditions. For the firepalce, I explainned you which, was the problem, so I´m sorry...
Cristina was very nice and welcoming. She also offered to do our laundry because we were out of clean clothes and weren't going to be anywhere near Ponta Delgada anytime soon. This was greatly appreciated, especially after I mistakenly accused her of writing that the place had a laundry machine when it didn't.
The house is very secluded -- which I loved -- and when the fireplace was working, sitting around it was very relaxing and tranquil.
Unfortunately, several things went wrong during the stay. The furnace fell apart while a fire was going, which required us to put it out and the place was filled with smoke. It also couldn't be repaired while we were there (though this was only 2 days), so we didn't get to use it the next day. Many electronics, outlets, etc. were broken. The WiFi didn't work unless you were outside the house (since the signal came from another house just next door), though this was likely the fault of my phone with a smaller antenna than a laptop. These weren't big deals though, as I came here to escape electronics. These problems don't impact my star rating, but they're things that others staying here should know about.
I get the impression that we just got unlucky and that our experience wasn't indicative of what others should expect, especially when I read through the other very positive feedback Cristina received. I am giving this stay 3/5 stars, but I'm not upset about it and I think others who stay here would likely be fine. Cristina mentioned a pool nearby which I didn't get a chance to go to, and I'm sure my review would be more informed, and probably more positive, if I had.
Nice small house by the sea, well located and equiped.
Cristina was so kind and responsive to any doubts, we had a great experience! I would definitely go back to this house if returning to the island :)
