Description

The space

Private bedroom with shared bath in the upstairs 2br 1ba home of a duplex. The bed is a queen size inner spring futon with a 3" dense foam pad. It's very comfortable, I know, having slept on it a few times already. Both the bathroom and kitchen are 5 years new. The rest of the house is colorful with many plants. There's a small deck off the kitchen that looks over the trees and the creek, where you can watch the hummingbirds or other critters that live among us. There's basic cable TV and over 100 DVDs and tapes you can watch. I have 2 very friendly foster cats who are occasionally surly with each other.

Breakfast is included for stays of 10 days or less and you are free to use the kitchen. as long as you promise to clean up after yourself. I work during the day most of the time, and when I'm around I'd be happy to drop you off at the train or some other place.
The house is located at the dead end of a street and has many trees around the back and sides of the property. We don't get the noise of a street that has through traffic, but it does sometimes get neighbors double parking. With some maneuvering we can get a second car in and out of the right driveway.

Downtown Redwood City is a couple of miles away and has many restaurants, shops, a multiplex theater and outdoors events during the summer months. There is also a large community park a block away.

Public transportation is either .5 miles or 1 mile with a bus that goes to the Caltrain station or down El Camino to the airport or Stanford.
Driving times (without traffic):
8 minutes to both 101 and 280 freeways
SFO 30 minutes
San Jose Airport 30 minutes
Stanford: about
15 minutes
By bike : I've had several longer terms people going to Stanford by bicycle. Their commutes have ranged from 25 to 40 minutes, or they ride a mile down the road and put the bike on the bus to Stanford.

I have traveled all over the world and speak French, Spanish, some Italian, Portuguese, German and Arabic.. It would be my honor to host domestic and international travelers.. so bienvenue, willkommen, اهلًا و سهلا!

Guest access

Access to most areas, kitchen, living room/TV and garage for storing a bicycle or suitcases.
deck and garden too.

Interaction with guests

As much or as little as you want...

The neighborhood

I love that it's quiet. I particularly like spending time in the back where there is a garden and a creek and birds..

Other things to note

We're experiencing an severe drought that is unlikely to end soon, so short showers are necessary. We also recycle and compost at the house. There is a spot in the bedroom where the floor creaks.

House Rules
No smoking
Not suitable for pets
No parties or events

In order to provide a comfortable place for my guests to stay, study or just sleep, the following are the rules of the house. It is your responsibility to not only read the rules once, but to be aware of and follow them throughout your stay at my home. Most of them are common sense and are meant to ensure an environment that works for everyone.

-This is a fragrance /chemical free environment - no perfumes/colognes, "air fresheners" stinky laundry soap/dryer sheets ---- shampoos/soaps/shower gels/lotions with fragrance are fine.
-No smoking or heavy drinking please.

-Shoes indoors are okay, but please don't wear hard heels indoors as there is a person living below whose peace we need to respect.

-Bathroom -Though the drought has been declared over, we're still being careful with water..

Kitchen- There will be space in the refrigerator and pantry. Please clean up after yourself (sorry, I have to say it) For guests staying over one week, please help with removing trash.

Room- I may ask you on occasion to open your window so that air can circulate. Sheets will be changed between guests, longer term guests can change their own sheets when the need arises.

-Wifi - Don't download torrents or do anything that can get us in trouble with Comcast.
-No outside guests in the house without prior ok. You will be responsible for them. Please see charges for 2nd person staying.
Please do not have mail sent to this address until we have a discussion (I'm still getting junk mail for people who haven't stayed here in over a year).

I'll orient you once you arrive.
I look forward to meeting you.

I had a fantastic experience at Julia's place, and this was largely due to Julia's generosity. For example, on arrival, she gave me a comprehensive tour of the area, and took the trouble to help me work out a cycling route to Stanford University, where I was to work. Every morning during my visit, she offered me a breakfast of eggs or pancakes, which, needless to say, was delicious every time. She even shared her amazing collection of foreign books and movies. Thank you Julia for making my stay so comfortable, enjoyable and memorable!

I'm very tall as most humans go, at 6'3". I'm pretty chill and into healthy pursuits, almost but not quite vegetarian, drink wine on a rare occasion. Movie lover but they have to be great movies. I've been to somewhere between 40 and 50 countries (I guess I can only count Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic once) but no longer work for an airline..I've been told I'm a great traveling companion, easy, don't complain much. When I've traveled alone, my preference has been to stay in a home rather than a hotel. I've made friends around the world by being set up with people (pre-AIRbnb). Cooking for people is something I do for fun along with learning my languages better. French and Spanish are pretty good and I'm working on Portuguese these days. It's so satisfying! My favorite music is whatever I'm singing or playing at the moment..
