Positive vibes in an active, diverse, artsy neighborhood with restaurants, bar and grocery within walking distance (this is not common in Detroit). Simple, ecofriendly with 2 guest bedrooms. 3 night min. stay.
Detroit is much like a Berlin; full of creativity, interesting history and the paradox of good and bad sections. This location is in an, active, artisitc neighborhood right by the beautiful Belle Isle & approx 2 miles from Downtown. The house is simply decorated with a wonderful porch (they call it the stoop here) to relax on. It is not fancy but clean, natural and beautiful.
Cabled internet & DVD player with flat screen. Much space in the house and front porch. Access to the backyard for dining and relaxing as our dog is currently on loan. We are in a historic neighborhood close to connective motorways, downtown, the riverwalk and the coolest neighborhood around!
Discount for stays of one month or more.
Profits after overhead will go back into the community through alternative school programs, restoration and community greening efforts.
Motto: "Live fully, tread lightly!"
Buses: one reliable one down Lafayette to Downtown and another reliable one up Woodward. Otherwise Detroit is transport poor as it was the 'Motorcity' and though efforts are working to change this, it takes time. There are bike lanes and flat roads around our house.
Bike: A bike may be available to loan as long as you lock it up when parking and take good care.

Interaction with Guests
We love and care about our guests and offer a smoke-free, clean, trustworthy environment with good mattresses and comfortable beds. Smoking is fine outside on the porch or other.
Our hood is mixed, friendly, involved in community and probably one of the coolest neighborhoods around. We have a lot of creative people of different ages trying to forge new lifestyles that are more healthy and sustainable. It is a city so one always needs to be mindful and not flash your wealth about. Common sense is the best ticket.
There's a reliable bus on LaFayette that will take you downtown (#49) and then another up Woodward that will take you to Metro-Detroit like Ferndale, etc. but any other bus is NOT reliable unless it is on the SMART bus circuit (ie. you can go reliably down Jefferson, & Gratiot, etc.). Detroit was the Motor-city--don't forget, and though us cyclists are trying to transform it, we have a ways to go. There are cycle lanes and if the weather is decent, it is a good place to cycle although distances can be further than you think.
Cycle for rent at $5 per day, provide your own lock.

Both Sofia and her son are amazing creative people who will open their home to you in the way only family can. I was fortunate enough to have a picnic with her and her friends, one of them described them as the nicest people you will ever meet, and it is no exaggeration. I had a great time in my visit. If you like feeling like you belong, stay here.
Thanks for your compliment, although we found you equally nice and I think that is what is so special about airbnb, it is about the connection of adventurous, kind people that makes it so different than other modes of accomodation. You are now like family and are welcome anytime--we will always find room! :-)
It was a great pleasure to stay in Sofia's house. Sofia and Nils are super nice and also Detroit is the best city that i've ever been. if you're interested in automobile, it would be the super nice city to visit. and also, there is some great places like DIA(Diego Rivera mural), Heidelberg project, Bell Isle, restaurant(SLOWS!!!), etc. if i had a chance to visit the U.S, I would stay in Sofia's house for sure. House is very historic(it's been 100 years built.) warm and nice. and the dog is shy(but finally we became a friend). and also met some great neighborhoods near from the house i lived. so.. in other words, it was the best experinece for me.
Located in a great and peaceful neighborhood, Sofia's house is also quite near from downtown Detroit (the bus 48 is direct).
Sofia gave us good recommendations during our staying.
Unfortunately, the absence of wifi was really inconvenient.
About the city, even if we visited an amazing art museum (DIA) and walked around Detroit to explore its beautiful architecture, four days were maybe too much. We have been quite disappointed by the lack of tourism activities. However it also let us the time to discover Ann Arbor, a dynamic et charming student city (just 45 minutes of Detroit driving).
Yes, unless you enjoy live Theater and the Orchestra, Detroit is not the greatest city for those under 21 except during its many festivals, as many of the activities are in the nightlife of music and dance. It is also not the greatest city to get around in without a car....the motor city needs to improve in the area of getting more public 'motorization!' In the summer the slow rolls on bicycle as well as kayaking, swimming, etc. offer much more for all ages. Winter is not the most active time to be sure! Wish you all the best on your multi-city tour! Hope my internet gets fixed soon as it is VERY inconvenient for me!
The house is located very close to downtown Detroit, which made it very convenient for us. We had a great time there and Sofia made us feel welcome in her house and gave us very good tips about the restaurants and cafes in Detroit. Sofia also addressed any concern we had with room temperature and other things and made sure we are comfortable.
We had a wonderful time in Detroit and Sofia made sure we knew as much as possible about the city. The house was very comfortable and is in a good neighborhood. I would definitely recommend staying at her house for anyone looking for some quiet in a great area.
Sofia and her family are very friendly and open-minded people. You fell welcome in the first second you're there.
The house is beautiful and lovely decorated, it felt like home.
Even though it is a bit far away from downtown, that doesn't matter because we could use some of their bikes.
Sofia gave us good tips what to do in Detroit.
I am glad the bikes helped, and in American terms, we are very CLOSE to downtown :-) Here 2 miles is considered close....I know it is very different in Europe as close is a block or two away. It takes awhile to get accustomed to the huge expanses of space....It would be great to hear how you fare in South America and I wish you happy and safe journeys!

Life is all about attitude and how we choose to journey through it. I have found Travel has helped me become more empathic, less judgemental and has given me a view on the world which would have been impossible without it. I love sharing my home with fellow travelers who might also be on journeys of self-discovery. I have many interests and some talents. I sing, dance, write and work in the healing arts. I also cycle most places, love camping and the outdoors and appreciate good art, food and film. I am a good listener and think many people shout because they do not feel heard these days. I am very selective about what I put into my mind and my body and my home reflects this.
I love moments of true sharing between fellow human beings (of all ages) and I tend to enjoy things and people with depth, although I appreciate all people. I am a critical thinker & able to deal with truth while still seeing the beauty of our world. . I am on a journey and do my best to learn, love wholly and tread lightly everyday. I can live without many things, but prefer to have a pleasant, artsy environment and good, wholesome food and good company.
