The Space

Detroit is much like a Berlin; full of creativity, interesting history and the paradox of good and bad sections. This location is (email hidden)ly, active, artisitc neighborhood right by the beautiful Belle Isle. The house is simply decorated with a wonderful porch (they call it the stoop here) to relax on and a back deck to BBQ on. It is not fancy but clean, natural and beautiful.
Cabled internet is available to all, but we live TV free. You are able to access Netflicks and whatever else your heart desires by computer with cabled internet or wi-fi. Wi-fi goes off at 10 p.m. for security, but cabled internet is still available.
We are in a historic neighborhood close to connective motorways, downtown, the riverwalk and the coolest neighborhood around!
Discount for stays of one month or more.
Profits after overhead go back into the community through alternative school programs, restoration and community greening efforts.
Motto: "Live fully, tread lightly!"
Buses: one reliable one down Lafayette to Downtown and another reliable one up Woodward. Otherwise Detroit is transport poor as it was the 'Motorcity' and though efforts are working to change this, it takes time.
Bike: A bike may be available to loan as long as you lock it up when parking and take good care.

*DSL cabled Internet is available but please no wi-fi after 10 p.m. & please no mobile wi-fi indoors (use it on front or backporch).Full house priveledges Kitchen, stereo, books, etc. Only request is that you CLEAN AFTER USE.
*Leave all as good or better than you found it
Front porch, dining room, piano, instruments--all shared

Interaction with Guests

Interaction is different with each guest depending on 2 things: their time and our schedule at that moment although we do our best to be helpful and conversational.

The Neighborhood

Our hood is mixed, friendly, involved in community and probably one of the coolest neighborhoods you will ever encounter. We have a lot of creative people of different ages trying to forge new lifestyles that are more healthy and sustainable.

Getting around

There's a reliable bus on LaFayette that will take you downtown and then another up Woodward that will take you to Metro-Detroit like Ferndale, etc. but any other bus is NOT reliable unless it is on the SMART bus circuit (ie. you can go reliably down Jefferson, etc.). Detroit was the Motor-city--don't forget, and though us cyclists are trying to transform it, we have a ways to go. There are cycle lanes and if the weather is decent, it is a good place to cycle although distances can be further than you think.
Cycle for rent at $5 per day.

Other Things to Note

Some of the Places I've been:
India--saved my life
United Kingdom--develops my integrity
Scandinavia--for the great outdoors
Former East Block Countries--hard working, educated and interesting
Spain--wonderful people and quaility of life
France--love the food, art, countryside....shame about the people (just kidding!)
Italy--fun to visit
South America--still want to go to Bolivia and Brazil--Peru is so far my favorite
Central America--LOVE Mexico!
Asia--China too crowded and polluted but much to learn & reflect upon

Motto: "Live fully, tread lightly!"

  • The overall experience was more than great!!!! Detroit unexpectedly was one of the most amazing cities I had ever been and people like Sofia and many others I met on my trip made me want to go back.

No doubt I will come back!!! Thank you Sofia for being so flexible and taking care of us!

  • Sofia is lovely and will make your stay as welcoming as possible, from introducing you to great places to go out locally, or getting involved in community get togethers, she even lent me her sat-nav so I didn't get lost on the I-94 again!
I'd highly recommend staying with Sofia - especially if you like staying at real places , being where the locals are at and you like historic Detroit houses!

I intend to be back in Detroit as soon as possible, and while Sofia's place is 38 miles from where I am visiting, Sofia's will be where I stay.

  • Sofi was really sweet and a great host. The neighborhood is great - convenient and beautiful. I had a great time!

(One thing to know - the room I stayed in is not the one pictured, and the bed is a cot. If you need a firm bed (like I do) you might wake up with some back pain.)

  • It was really great to get to stay with Sofia in Detroit. She was really kind and welcoming during my stay, showing me around, lending me a bike to get around what can otherwise be a quite challenging city for those without a car and introducing me to a load of friends and neighbours, so that I got a real feel of what Detroit life is like. Staying there really made the trip something special.

  • Sofia was a fantastic host. Her home is charming and in a safe neighborhood. She went out of her way to make my stay an enjoyable one. I can't wait to return. Don't let the media hype keep you from exploring one of America's most beautiful and historic cities.

  • Sofia and Ammil were AMAZING! I was comfortable in my stay, their place is clean and quiet, and it's easy to travel around the city from where they are located. They showed me around a bit, and were overall incredible hosts. I plan on visiting again and fully intend to stay with Sofi and Ammil the next time I'm in town! Give Sofi a shout, you won't be disappointed!

  • I needed solace last minute in Detroit and luckily I found Sofi adorable historic house right in downtown.

Amillio my host the weekend was very helpful and just a feet guy. I felt very comfortable and had no problems what so ever. A great experience overall and I highly recommend them for anyone visiting Detroit.
I will surely be hitting them up again when I visit Detroit again.

Thank you Sofi and Amillio for everything.

About
Life is all about attitude and how we choose to journey through it. I have many interests and some talents. I sing, dance, write and work in the healing arts. I also cycle most places, love camping and the outdoors and appreciate good art, food and film. I am a good listener and think many people shout because they do not feel heard these days. I am very selective about what I put into my mind and my body. I love moments of true sharing between fellow human beings (of all ages) and I tend to enjoy things and people with depth, although I appreciate all people. I am a critical thinker & able to deal with truth while still seeing the beauty of our world. . I am on a journey and do my best to learn and tread lightly everyday. I can live without many things, but prefer to have a pleasant, artsy environment and good, wholesome food.
