The Space

Your stay one mile up the hill from the historic town of Mendocino begins in the garden suite of a private home on a quiet, tree-lined street. In the morning, you can view the apple orchard and the garden bursting with myriad flowers while enjoying the satisfying breakfast we provide during your stay—coffee, tea, cocoa, milk, freshly made granola, bread from a local bakery, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, and organic fruit. You can sit on the deck at your private entrance to enjoy your breakfast, look out over the meadow and watch the many birds winging their way. And with the small refrigerator, microwave & toaster ovens, a French press and teapot in the suite, you can expand your eating options. In the bedroom, your comfort is ensured with a queen-size bed, an electric fireplace and 2 comfortable chairs in the seating area. A large closet offers you space to store your personal belongings.

This accommodation allows you privacy for a restful and restorative getaway. Yet the carpeted sunlight-filled studio also offers the perfect space to work. Several feet of desk-height counter space, generous enough for two, inspire writing, sewing, knitting, art work. In addition, there's an iron and ironing board, should you feel especially industrious. Wi-fi is available, as well as an iPod/mp3 player.

The sounds of birds and frogs, the occasional bunny or baby fox, hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies—these are the distractions of this Mendocino setting. In town, just a 20-minute walk away, you’ll find shops, restaurants, and various cultural offerings, depending on the season. Wend your way to the headlands, where you’ll look onto the dramatic glory of the Pacific Ocean. And at night, you’ll behold stars as you may have never seen them. An aside: if you’re looking for property on the beautiful Mendocino coast, use this suite as your home base.

Please note: The 11% Mendocino County Bed Tax is included in the room rate.

  • Our stay with Margaret at Hummingbird Haven was lovely! Also our first time using Airbnb, it was a delightful experience. Margaret's home is an easy walk to downtown Mendocino, and she provided anything we needed and more. And yes, there were plenty of hummingbirds in her lovely garden and yard. Definitely a highlight of our honeymoon- thank you!

  • We just had the most delightful weekend in Mendocino at Hummingbird Haven. If you are a nature photographer and love hummingbirds you cannot find a better (email hidden)e grounds are beautiful and better yet it all lights up at night with detailed whimsical lighting. And speaking of detail Margaret our host does not skip one....everything was perfect and could not have been better.

Margaret was welcoming, charming and humorous and ready with information for anything we might have wanted to do. She is a perfect host and we will definitely be recommending her lovely place and coming back next year!

  • Margaret is the most most charming person and the ultimate hostess who has obviously had many years experience of making her guests feel very welcome and special. Numerous amenities and extra touches have been thought of and supplied at Hummingbird Haven. We thoroughly enjoyed our recommended visit to the Mendocino Botanical Gardens and to the restaurant that Margaret suggested for our anniversary dinner - it was perfect! Hummingbird Haven was exactly as we expected from the description and photographs - absolutely spotlessly clean, bright and welcoming, with plenty of room for us. It is only a 5 minute drive from the center of Mendocino on a quiet leafy road. We have already told our friends that if they plan a trip to Mendocino, this is where they should stay!

  • Our experience at Hummingbird Haven was wonderful. It was more beautiful than we expected it to be. It is most definitely a cozy retreat in a very safe residential neighborhood. Margaret was very gracious and the accommodations were excellent. She is a wonderful host and had thought of everything to make our visit relaxing. The gardens were so beautiful and lush. The grounds are quite large and true to its name there were hummingbirds everywhere. Sitting on the deck and sipping wine while enjoying the multitude of flowers and birds was so peaceful. There are lots of excellent restaurants close by. The Botanical Gardens just down the road are magnificent. And of course there is the ocean. We could not have been happier about our choice of Hummingbird Haven. We highly recommend it.

  • The place was lovely and clean, and Margaret and her daughter were very friendly. Breakfast was great, and we liked having a little eating nook where we could also heat up the previous night's leftovers for lunch. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends.

  • A wonderful place to relax!

Long leisurely breakfasts on the patio over looking the beautiful flower and hummingbird filled garden epitomized serenity. The eggs and homemade granola were mind-blowing.

We marveled at the sounds of nature.

All the rooms were bright, spacious and squeaky clean. Well appointed with a wide variety of teas, toiletries, flashlights, etc.

All provided Margaret, a warm and wonderful host.

We hope to return again very soon!

  • What a beautiful and serene place! We stayed at Margaret's for a long weekend and had a fantastic time. Everything was just what we needed, fabulous food, cozy atmosphere, and fantastic scenery. If she asks if you want food when you get there, say yes! The most perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs, granola that I am already missing, and fantastic hearty bread that's a great snack when you're out and about. Also, you are well taken care of, pure and simple. Everything you could possibly need is there and more and it's clean! We had a great time and will definitely be coming back!
