Polwatte House is situated in a really beautiful location, outside of Kandy, away from the hustle, bustle and noise of the city. Polwatte House offers a home away from home next to the Mahaweli River, with stunning river walks, or when the river is too high, guests can take advantage of our kayaks.
We offer the advantage of being able to explore real Sri Lankan village life, while offering a peaceful family haven next to the River. Swim at nearby 4-5* Earl's Regency Hotel or watch the cricket at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
TRANSPORT: Our house is a ten minute walk to the main bus route to Kandy, with frequent buses to Kandy (journey to Kandy takes around 15mins depending on time of travel). From the bus you can catch a tuk tuk to our house, or if we are free we'll pick you up from the main road. From Kandy you can catch a tuk tuk to Polwatte House for around Rs 700, please call us if you need assistance with giving the driver directions.
For journeys around Kandy or exploring further afield, we can recommend a reliable driver with AC car or van to help you explore this beautiful area.
No smoking inside the house, this is the main house rule. Other than this we want our guests to relax, feel at home and enjoy their stay at Polwatte House.
We offer lunch and dinner. And guests can have complimentary tea and coffee. Also, some guests feel inspired to venture into the kitchen and learn some Sri Lankan dishes, which we very much welcome.
A wonderful escape from the craziness of Kandy, this old English villa is overlooking the river, with big verandas for relaxing, having a cuppa, reading a book or having a drink in the evening.
Alisa was very helpful with directions, places to visit and catering to my gluten free requirements and generally being a lovely easy going hostess.
The bedroom, although small and simple, has all that you need, including a comfy bed!
Meals are delicious and Although they have a young family, so can be rather noisy at meal times, they handle it all in their stride and you really feel like one of the family.
My husband's favourite times were having a beer on the verandah with Andrew talking all Manner of subjects.
The Empire Cafe is definitely and must near temple of the tooth for great coffee juices and meals, thanks for the tip Alicia and Andrew can help you you find the most amazing treacle and jaggery!
All in all, a lovely, home style, relaxing place for us to stay- we will be back!
Immer wieder gerne!
An amazing stay at Polwatte House and a house steeped in Sri Lankan history. It is set on the river in a tranquil spot, the pictures do not lie and it is accurately represented. Dinner was fantastic and the fact that we were vegetarian was catered for easily and with no fuss, something we were grateful for, having said that the chicken curry was so tempting..... Our stay was perfect and nothing was too much trouble to the host. Ailsa was friendly and helped with advice and tips.
This is a lovely old bungalow sited a few miles outside Kandy at Kundasale, on the bank of the river. It is tranquil and lovely.
Ailsa and her family are great hosts and Usha and Nisha are charming young women who work very hard to take care of you.
Ailsa arranged for a taxi to meet us at Kandy, helped us with arranging a driver to take us on the trips we wanted to do and she and Andrew gave some really good advice.
We ate with the family every night but Ailsa has a tuk tuk driver who knows their location and will meet you and take you back to Polwatte House.
This is a family with young children who are building a business and we wish them every success.
Alisa and her family could not have been any more welcoming. She was helpful and warm hearted.
Overall we enjoyed our stay, Ailsa and Andrew are a lovely couple who go out of their way to help. The house has character and is in a beautiful location, we stayed for 5days and our room was pleasent. On a practical level the bedroom and bathroom would benefit from hanging space as there wasn't any.
We spent two days with Ailsa and her family in Kandy. It's a really great house with artistic charm and we loved it a lot! Ailsa offered us delicious Sri Lanka foods and many useful advice for traveling around. Sri Lanka is a very cool country, once discovered, you must explore. Really wish to visit Ailsa's family and the house again in the future!
