< Izunuma and Uchinuma >
Izumonuma and Uchinuma are the largest lowland lakes in Miyagi Prefecture, covering 491 hectares (387 hectares of water surface area) in the northern part of the prefecture.
Even in winter, the maximum daily temperature exceeds 4°C and there is no freezing, so it has excellent conditions for many waterfowl to spend the winter, and various aquatic plants cover the lake surface,
A rich plant environment has been created, nurturing a diverse biota including dragonflies, fish, and waterfowl.
There are vast rice fields around the swamp, and the water from the swamp is used as a water source and plays a role in flood control, making it an important place for the lives of the people who live there.
It was registered under the Ramsar Convention in 1985 and is an internationally important wetland for waterfowl. (Designated as the second largest wetland in Japan after Kushiro Wetland)
